Should I Post It?

Featured Replies

I made a comment in Bedders quite some time ago (possibly even started a topic) about the number of times I have spent more than a couple of minutes typing a reply and the just hit the close box.

This is the latest one........... the window is still open ...... what do I do, post or close?

I could turn this little thread about bad time-keeping as a national Thai trait completely around by becoming one of the Correct English Police (CEP)

Currently waiting for the kettle to boil, so I'll just spend a few minutes correcting the OP instead of twiddling my thumbs.

Dear members

i m staying in bangkok since 5 years, but 1 thing irritates me is,....

I have been living in Bangkok for five years, and during that time, there is still one thing that irritates me.

thai people dont understand value for time, they are always late on appoinments,

i understand traffic problems of bangkok, but there are many other ways to reach any plance on time.

The Thai people that I have been in contact with don't appear to realise that time is money and they are constantly late for appointments that I have made with them. I understand that Bangkok is one of the most congested places in the world (traffic wise) but they should be able to make allowances for that.

and they dont even say sorry for being late,as if these is their routine activity.

To add insult to injury, they don't even try to make amends by saying 'sorry' when they are late.

i am facing this problem everyday, and is seriously driving me nuts.

See note below this quote

please share ur ideas on this

Has anyone else experienced the same?

thnx

Thanks

N.B. I don't normally pull people up on their use of our common language (I did it once and regretted it, hi Martin) the odd dropped capital letter, the missing "'" every now and again, the misuse of were where and we're.... no problem.

But, because of a combination of your truly awful use of my mother tongue (probably put down to apathy) and your total inability to adapt to a different culture (apathy number one) I will join that other band that is so well loved on TV and just say.

If you don't like it, go home.

Hah, the Grammar Police! Tad, my grammar is terrible, and I truly love the English Language, especially if reading something poetically written. Its frustrating because for me its akin to learning a new language, such as my learning Thai. Where I am beginning to understand more but still unable to express myself without sounding like a buffoon.

May I suggest, if you feel urges and surges, to create a helpful grammar topic (probably best here in Bedlam so it wont be deleted) where you select posts that frustrate you, paste them into your thread, and sort out the mess. Then, if you still feel its required, post your corrected version on their thread. The bonus is it gives the rest of us opportunity to read how something should be written as well as having a giggle.

If you do create this a thread like this, please feel free to tackle any of my posts that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up in frustration at my bad command of my mother tongue, including this one! I hope I may learn from it! :o

I'm all for correct language usage.

It's probably harder for me than most because I spent most of my working life doing nothing more demanding, in a literary sense, than filling in time sheets and log books.

I do find though that in forums people tend to criticize the grammar and spelling of those that they disagree with more than someone with whom they don't. These people are just considered to be "a bit of a character" and their posting style amusing rather than annoying.

My advice is to never trust a spell checker, just because a word is spelled correctly doesn't mean it's the one you want.

Also the a professional writer recommended this book, which can be fully downloaded at no cost from the internet.

"Elements of Style" http://www.bartleby.com/141/

Find out where he lives, abuse his dog and kick his telly in. That'll teach the bounder.......

Ok..............The dog was a bit harsh, but not the telly !!!!

A little dog abuse is OK as long as it's verbal... "Bad dog, bad dog!"

Well, I was going to begin with the standard mention that perhaps the originator of the message (yogi) is not a "native" English speaker, and allowances should be made for that.

I am unable to ascertain his origins from his profile, but it does appear that he is a "native" English speaker.

After reviewing his 19 posts to date, I'd say it's part laziness and part (Uneducated ? Dumb ? Just can't be arsed to compile a decent sentence, with semi-proper grammar, punctuation and spelling ?). Perhaps a combination of all four ?

In answer to the OP, go ahead and post your response. I have a sneaking suspicion that the person in question will not even realize why you have done so, (until he reads the last part of the post of course).

(Note that some may consider you post to be a "flame" though.)

Post It Post It Post IT!!!

:o

Oki ... will do (don't need the url .... the window is still hanging on my screen like a little temptress)

Kerry

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the chap is a native English speaker.... he's just lazy.... I also don't have a problem with being lazy, I spend most days doing nothing, but, and it's a big but, if I do decide to get off my arse and do something, I'll do it properly, if I require some help and post a question on a forum, I'll at least put a modicum of effort into it.

The guy reminds me of one of the ex-pats locally, who despite the fact that he has been here for over seven months, still hasn't managed to sort out his pension payments, if I hadn't spent time sending emails for him and used some of my Skype credits making some telephone calls, he still wouldn't even know what his NI number is.

Some people just want you to wipe their bottoms for them and then complain that you haven't done it properly.

Laziness and apathy....... they'll be the end of us all (if anyone is bothered)

>...I could turn this little thread about bad time-keeping as a national Thai trait completely around

Three suppliers (different fields) due over the past four days, none turned up. (We want work doing/buy stuff.)

One farang meeting last week, which was fine, not followed up email agreeing to business.

And times are supposted to be difficult for these people??

Conversely, I had air-con installed last month (don't need it yet, but it was too good an offer to miss) the guys turned up to install it when they said they would. One of the conditions of me renting this house was that it had to have an ADSL land-line, got one before I moved in (although that did take a few calls)

Ex-pat had a problem with his PC, told him I would be there the next day at 4pm, was he home when I went?, no.

tut tut tut.....

(Note that some may consider you post to be a "flame" though.)

Sorry Thaddy, I am going to have to sanitise that thread because the OP didn't take to being politely corrected very well. :o

The buggers an Egyptian !!!!..........How did you know Sounders !!!!

This is the guy (yogi) who suggested, without even a hint of irony, (in the 'How To Deal With 'criminals'' thread in General) that the best solution would be to "KILL THEM." (I think mods have removed the post, either that or I imagined it - wouldn't be the first time). I'd say he was fair game...

No worries mate, it was expected, and probably for the best.

I understood him perfectly, but then that is probably a damning indictment :D

I was going to post that in his thread, but thought Sounders might have taken umbrage :o

its all that tetlee t n mc v tee biskits.

In the " good old days" they used to put stuff in young men's tea to stop the urge to go and conceive little tykes like him.

Sorry Thad, but your intended post struck me as having the hallmarks of a flame. Yogi's expression indicates a non-native English tongue (perhaps Germanic?). The poster was complaining about poor/lazy time management by (some?) Thai people. You have every right to post an opposing view... but your intended response comes across as arrogant. If, for example only, your German was not all that flash and you were posting to a German-language forum, would you be impressed with an arrogant response that dissected the grammar of your entire post?

I would also not view such a post (about lack of timeliness) as warranting the view that if he doesn't like it, he should go home. It was a minor gripe about something that (I dare say) irks us all.

So no, I would not have posted it.

Fair do's.

But in one of his later posts, he says this.

petharoi, you must be lucky to have honest and hardworking people with you,

but i was trying to discuss on normal thai timing.

i think thai mass dont take time factor seriously.

thanks for sharing

take care

That to me indicates that he has a very good command of English, he is just lazy, and I found that more than a little hypocritical considering his topic.

I must admit that my last couple of comments were a little harsh, and I was glad when Sounders removed them.

The line "I have been in Bangkok since five years" should automatically tell you he was a non english speaker. Like Ping I was thinking German or Dutch language. Egyptian was a surprise.

He might be a lazy Egyptian.
