Hi all,

I have a car here in Australia which is no longer needed, it's a good car, low k'ms but can't really be sold for anywhere it's true value. I don't have a car in Thailand so I'm thinking just send the bloody thing to LOS and get it out of my driveway. I've got a house in Thailand but no car. Plenty of use for a car there so...

What's the deal? my wife vaguely seems to think that she can import a limited quantity of something without paing import tax. Not sure if this extends to motor vehicles, would be easy to just transfer ownership here in Aus and send it over. What sort of tax could we potentially be talking about. The car is a 3.5 litre V6 sedan, seats 5.

All and any advice/ input is greatly apprieciated.

I looked into it recently, but when you see the duty is around 270 percent (yes 270 percent). This is on the Thai valuation of the car and includes duty on the frieght at the same rate. Personal effects are not treated the same way.It just ain't worth it, do a search you will find it has been covered a number of time on TV. What I have been meaning to look into is the free trade agreement between Thailand and Australia. Maybe it would be a way around it, used car prices in Thailand are high.

There is no possibility to import any used car to thailand. Otherwise nobody would buy all this (in my opinion horrible) Vioses and Jazzes. If so, i would drive a Corvette instead of a "Made in Thailand" Plastic Car". To sad, but for get it!

Are you sure it is not possible?, I think you will find it is possible but just too expensive.

What is wrong with Japanese cars made in Thailand? Tens of thousands of Japanese managers and supervisors live in Thailand with their families, their job is to ensure the car is of the same quality as those made in Japan.

Americans in their own country can easily opt for Ford/GM/Chevrolet but we see what has happened.

Are not the Corvettes and similar junk nobody wants to own what is bringing Detroit down the <deleted> creek?

I was thinking about it some 7 years ago, even got some shipping quotes and made enquiries. I don't know about the situation now but the 'word' then was I had to sell the car to TW and she had to own it in Aust for at least 12 months, she could then bring it into Thailand as personal effects with no duties BUT I believe she had to put a bond on it for some 2 years. Could not be sold!

Anyway I couldn't find anything in writing so it just got too hard.

1. Why detroit is in shit? This is a Marketing and Management problem they not even promote or try to sell their cars outside US. There would be a big marked in Europe if they ever would promote teir cars.

2. Not everybody is a "Family freek"! I'm personaly not at all. So i don't need a car with 4 doors. I'm from Switzerland and i drove my whole life Trans Ams and Corvettes. So i'm totally not satisfied whit a Vios or a Jazz. This cars are crap for me. So what i drive here is a 1975 old Toyota Crown, old but strong, whit steelbumpers, with a 2 JZ engine. Better option with all this motircycles on each traffiglights. Today American cars are plastic too, i'm agree, but the safety standards, style and body is and looks much better. See the new Dodge Challenger or the coming Camaro for example for the same price of a Toyota Altis overhere in Thailand. Don't tell me you want sit in the Altis in case of a accident. Even Toyota build different cars in the US than in Thailand. The Quality in Thailand is very low and even air bags is a option, the price still much higher for a made in Thailand car in compare whit the same model produced in the US. In US you'll get a 2.4 liter Altis for the same price of a "floor model 1.6 liter, no options, in Thailand. Many Vios comes not even with alloy wheels or airbags, no heaters, but still 30% more expensive than in the US.

Ant there is another thing: If someone looks plasma TV on a leather sofa, he will never satisfied to come to Thailand and look in a small 17 inches TV on a woodenchair. This is the similar case wich peaple who drives a Corvette or a American SUV, for example. Not everybody like to drive a noisy diesel instead of a V6 or a V8. and again. And there is no options for those peaple. I don't have Family and i'll never support any Family, never ever, so i don't care about the fuel consumtion of a car. But i want a smooth ride, not a ratteling diesel or a underpowered 4 banger for a high price.

There is no relief in TAFTA for individuals bringing in S/H cars, sorry.

If I drive my car from Singapore into Bangkok, and left my car in Bangkok for long term use, will the authorities find out?

Find out sure, because your car runs with your visa.
