What you don't understand is that it's working as intended. Foreign embassies are for you to get a visa at home before you travel to another country. For someone that lives in Malaysia they would plan ahead and live their daily life while waiting for the visa so it's no problem. The embassies have grown wary of foreigners using the Thai embassies in SE Asia to try and live in Thailand and not do things the normal way. They've purposely made the processing times long to dissuade this behavior and make it difficult and inconvenient. It seems it's working on you, but not enough to prevent you from applying in the first place. -

ETA
They already specifically said that the ETA (if it ever happens) will be used to allow people previously approved to use automatic gates. The entire purpose of ETA is to standardize the process so it's not at the discretion of the immigration officers anymore.
