To me I've noticed a few closed threads for really minor grafs being closed before they've really started. In one thread I had a reply removed. not that I crossed any lines, was insulting, didn't concern religion, race. My fault was not agreeing with the poster who was a moderator.

Last year during a global warming thread one poster was most abusive to those who weren't adherents of the global warming cult. The insults hurled toward me were nothing in comparision to what he was calling a female thai poster. From a lady of the night to a pedo. I asked repeatedly in the thread as did others for a moderator to censure this person, but to no avail. To disagree and argue is one thing but the incessant name calling was totally uncalled for towards the lady. Yet as the abuser was a global alarmist and normally a PC champion, he wasn't censured, and I can't recall seeing the thai ladies posts ever again.

Some here on outside the box in Bedlam have pointed out that this should be a place where a little laxiety of the normal rules should occur, but they are enforced just as ridgidly.

Is this because of the new relationship with the Nation (props to Thaivisa on that) ?

BTW on the global waring front, a sunspot has formed on the sun beginning the 11 year cycle of warming. Which is right on time as it hasn't warmed since 1998

....errr?

My normal sources do not show any sunspot activity currently, nothing on SOHO.

There were two spots in July last year, which some suggest is the start of the new season, however a Swallow the Summer does not make. Cycle 24 is the next one.

Sorry, not even close let alone a cigar, Cuban or otherwise.

Sun spot are not a measure of Solar or Global Warming, and the 1998 was not a sun spot maximium year, try 1980, 1991, 2002 and 2013(?) Source. Not an exact science, but an observed event. For this planet, atmospheric CO2 has a greater correlation with warming effects than solar events, articles like this just fog the issue.

The Sun spots themselves are patches of cooler gas viewed against the sun's photosphere, as a measure of solar activity - they do not mean an increase in temperature on Earth. But their ejected gases do give rise to an increase in polar aurora.

Next peak expected (spots) in 2012, with a second peak in 2013 if recent max cycles continue. With these double peaks (double tops) I would expect that there is really two systems acting to in near phase create the the observed effect. IMHO.

Futher reading.

If you use the report button then it will be visible to the whole moderating team, just posting in a thread has no guarantee of being picked up. Failing that you could have also pm'd a mod on duty at the time. We aren't mind readers & not every post can be picked up all the time. That is why we have the pm a moderator function.

As for the pc thing, provide some links to your examples, just saying "this thread or that" isn't really fair, give us some links so we can read what you deem too pc. Also what would the new deal, taking on the nations forum traffic, have to do with how bedlam or out of the box is moderated? Just sounds (to me at least) as a roundabout way for you to complain about that tbh.

You should also note that responses to deleted posts will also be deleted.

and I agree with Boo, posting in a thread about someone's bad behavior is pointless. The report button on the bottom left hand side of a post is there for a reason. use it.

Perhaps you need some other sources www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2008/new_solarcycle.html

BTW I didn't say 1998 was a high sunspot activity time but inferred that global warming ceased and temps actually went down this past decade due to the lack of sunspot activity despite the furious activities of 2002-2003 toward the end of solarcycle 23. we were basically in a solar minimum

Nasa is saying this is the start of solar cycle 24 one year ago, but it takes a few years to reach solar maximum

As for sun spots, I am afraid I will have to leave any answers to Cuban.............

However

My general response to insults is to return fire, but I fear that is not the retort some would like, if someone is taking fire inappropriately, others generally jump in, or report, did you?

If you don't think that Bedlam as a whole is more lax and the Box in particular, I think you might need to reconsider which threads you read.

Abuse toward posters here, although allowed, is frowned upon and certainly not treated lightly by most, if you feel this was neglected in the thread you describe any chance of a link, so I can peruse it?

Me too. There's been a lot of posts over the last year. I've tried searching for something that might look like what mogoso was referring to without any luck.

I've found that members who know each other can toss some light-hearted abuse towards one-another without problem, as long as the language is kept in check. But when someone is overtly, crudely and rudely abusive, they tend to get the axe fairly quickly.

To the best of my knowledge, there has been no change in the rules of this or any other TV forum regarding the recent co-branding with The Nation. Bedlam and Outside The Box are still places where somewhat "off topic" and serious threads can be discussed that wouldn't normally be allowed in the general forums, but certain matters are still off limits (royalty, moderators/moderation, etc).

To me I've noticed a few closed threads for really minor grafs being closed before they've really started.
Like forums the world over on any subject you choose to consider, there will be a selection of people posting core content, observation and amusment as well as darker posts that poke unwelcome fun, are rude or abusive. For a forum to be successful for the general population of it's membership there needs to be a moderation service. Among the "Thai" themed forums Thai Visa is a clear leader, and I think that is because of it's moderation. A late friend of mine ran another Thai forum that failed due to his policy of self-moderation, in fact it was survival of the fittest - but that lead to one person killing the entire forum as he pulled every thread down to his level with personal attacks.

At risk of censorship (?) it is worth pointing out that TV is a commercial enterprise, count the adverts, and the forum is a nice to have extra (attracts the readers) that few people pay for using and to keep that going threads that met a criteria for removal are removed, seems fairly clear and open.

In one thread I had a reply removed.
Me too! Also had a thread I created in jest removed, does that mean I'm a bad member?

Seen any sunspots today?

mogoso, everyone

I know all MODs try to do our best to make sure all posts stay within the forum rules. However keep in mind the proportion of MODs to members (and how active a few of our posters can be :D ) Hence we have to rely on members such as yourselves to help us monitor violations. Of course you shouldnt resort to calling them names yourself (no matter how nasty he was to a woman or anyone else)

many of us MODs are women ourselves, and will certainly not let anyone get away with such nasty language....if it is brought to our attention, or w come across it.

if you have seen that some comments which are borderline nasty, or off topic or violate other forum rules do get removed, why would you think that any MOD male or female, would intentionally overlook one that is clearly insulting? regardless of who its hurled at?

:o

in terms of Bedlam, and OtB, the rules remain the same, prior to and after the joint venture with Nation.
