i have tried fishing and i must add not had much luck, but have still enjoyed myself!

for bait i have tried worms, corn, and the bait in packets from the shops which you make the mixture yourself, and still no luck.

and each time i go fishing i get comments like to cold or too hot wrong time of year ect.

now can any members enlighten me on the right bait and right rig and the right time to year to fish, and if morning or evening better times.

i live kalasin and have many beutifull fishing spots to go and also close to the lam pao dam, which i have not ventured to fish yet.

all help will be gratefully recieved cheers nev. :o

Nev,

The one "Fishing Pond" here is Kalasin is owned and run by a very nice Thai lady and her Policeman husband... If you stop in there for some of their 60 baht to fish as long as you like action, they would be more than willing to help / show you the best set ups and tell you when the best fishing is... They even have competitions about once a week that can be fun... Any of the fishing shops can tell you / your Thai wife / GF how to find the place... Also most fishing shops are very helpful regarding where, when and suggestions as to how to set up your rig...

Different fish will be acive eating at different times of day, I used to prefer fishing early morning or at dusk.

Bottom feeding catfish will be looking for stuff on the bottom of the river/pond so use a bait that sinks. If you prefer seeing what is happening try 'freelining" (just a hook and no other tackle on the line) with a small lump of bacon rind/pork fat; this will float and allow you direct contact with the fish.

Getting hypodermic needles is easy, so you can inject air into worms to make them float, while still alive the moving bait will attract fish.

Doe you smoke? Fish can 'smell' tabacco on bait that has been mounted by smokers, I have heard that this does repell some fish.

Watch out fro snakes.

i put in my own lake for fishing and the first year it was great, i would catch fish with corn, bread, the store mix just about any thing worked.

in the last three years it has been really bad, most of the time nothing, I have tried about every thing,

i not not smoke, 6 lb test line and use small hooks tied correctly; i have fished for walleye and bass in the States use a nail clipper dedicated for fishing. Nothing works.

the fish are given a commercial food every day, by my mother-in-law who is their protector, Now when I want fish for dinner I have a friend just use a net, the fish are really large and the catfish are getting really big.

what does all this mean, nothing really, but it is a bitch for me to catch fish here in Thailand. :o

For the last three days the Tech. College here in Kalasin opened one of their large ponds for a fishing competion where they charged 100 baht per pole.... A neighbor went two of the three days and won both the Trophy and Prize (1,000 baht) for both days... He caught 8 to 11 fish each day, and won with a 4 kilo one on his first day, and a 4.3 kilo on his 2nd day.... We went over yesterday (last day) to see what it was about, and watched the 30+ people catching many fish in the short (1 hour) that we were there...

All seemed to be using the Thai's favorite method of a Large Bait Ball (mixture of bread crumbs and who know's what eles) with 2 to 4 hooks with small foam balls stuffed into the bait balls...

I have been fishing in the area around Phitsanulok for about 7 months. At first a very frustrating experience as the fish to not understand English as I have found out. After many trips to the local irrigation lakes and the few accessable spots on the Nan river with limited success, I took my G/F's advice and started to locate and go to the local Fishing parks.

Not quite the same as fishing in the States but still can be very enjoyable and a challenge trying to get these fish to bite.

I have tried bringing my own Bread baits from the fishing stores and have found that most of these parks sell baits and know best what their fish will eat. As far as terminal gear the local Thai's use a bait cage with multipal hooks. I stay away from these as I hook myself better than a fish trying to pack bait on them. What I use is a rig that we use in America for Catfish and Carp. A treble hook sized depending on the size of the fish with a sliding sinker baited with dough bait. Have caught many Asia River Cats, Pacu, Tilapia, Ruby fish, Barbs and a few <deleted> is this fish using this technic. Also have found that it's best to avoid the weekends and Derby days as these can be crowded and refer to them as Combat fishing. All in all very relaxing and enjoyable and wish the best of luck fishing.

The best days fishing I have had have been beside a gently flowing river, well shaded with just a chair, a supply of beer, a book, , a rod, reel, line and a stone as a sinker.

No hook, of course. Wouldn't know what to do if I caught one! :D:o
