Ad Under First Post

Featured Replies

I don't think the ad banner under every first post is a good idea. I've been using TV for years and when I first discovered it, it made me think there were no more replies to that post. Maybe it's my screen (7") :o

I can't see any ads (The rules dictate I not discuss why :o ) so I'm not sure what you mean. There are solutions to your problem :D

It's a nightmare for newcomers and frustrating for old timers. Surely we are allowed to discuss this ... ?

Its been discussed ad nauseum in forum support.

Discussing the ads is allowed, discussing ways to block the ads is not. As members here are well aware.

I believe George stated that he was testing various placements, suggest if you really hate it then you PM G or email support with your complaints.

As said before, we are testing new ad placements together with our Google representative. This will take at least a week from now.

Please be patient while we are evaluating the results.

Cheers

Sometimes, it helps to check the forum support area so that this kind of thing isn't duplicated all over the forum.

'ad nauseum' is a great expression but I'm sick of it! :o

It's the 'ad' that's causing the 'nauseum'...

Very good Ping, very good indeed! :o

I wish they'd take those lonely hearts/hookers ads off the banner, my Mrs thinks I'm talking to those girls.

You're right, Scea, but this request has been made on numerous occasions in the past - you're wasting your time.

Jeez! The funny thing is that when TV is not a huge part of your life (as in I often have periods of 6-8 weeks when I don't/can't log in) then when you come back things have changed and you weren't around to witness them... then you ask a question and some people expect you may have read about the changes! I would never have thought to go to forum support to read about the new ads. I was merely making an observation on a change I noticed after my last 'away period'. Didn't know it was taboo

Well something else that is new and that really pisses me off is those occasional pop up ads that appear right in the middle of the opening post on a thread. It's happened a couple of times and I can't find a way to close them. I don't care what they are advertising I'd rather parade through Issan wearing a yellow shirt than buy anything so advertised.

Agree PhilHarries, business (read money) always takes over in these things :o

Apparently those popups are only supposed to be visible to people reading but not logged on. I read in 'Support' that a few people are getting them even when logged on, so it is a techncal issue that they are trying to fix.

Luckily, not everything they throw at us in guinea pig mode sticks. Do you recall that at one stage, they tried software that would underline certain words in everyone's posts? The unerlined words were linked to adds if you moused over them. Eg, if you wrote 'I like to travel around the islands', the word travel would display an underline and be linked to a travel agent. Luckily (for TV's health), they dumped that little pearl of an idea.

I think we are going to be stuck with the ads under post one, because it apparently generates a good click through response. As Chili said, there is a solution to overcome the ad display issue (that is not permitted to be discussed); and there is also the more permanent solution. The second one should be of the greater concern to TV, because driving their members off to other forums would be the worst outcome for generating ad revenue.

Personally, the ad under post one doesn't worry me in practical terms at the screen resolutions I use, but it annoys quite a few people and may also be seen to be the thin edge of the wedge; viz how long before there is an ad between every post? In my view, the golden rule should be: Ads should never encroach upon the post area of a page.

driving their members off to other forums would be the worst outcome for generating ad revenue.

At the risk of sounding pedantic, actually that's not quite true. A few members leaving the site will make barely a blemish in the (short-term, at least) income for Thaivisa. Hence all these ad-related changes being done and members complaints about them being ignored.

Go to the Board Statistics section at the bottom of the forum home page, and you'll see that the vast majority of the people reading the thread are guests. That's where the real money comes from, the thousands of people who stumble across these pages by searching on Google and Yahoo.

A few members leave? A few dozen even? Wouldn't even register a tiny blip, as not only would all the guests still be here, but also the other 10's of thousands of members who are in the site's database, of which hundreds browse the site every day. Moreover, if a few members leave and go elsewhere, probably the same amount or more will join the site as newbies the same day, ready to come in and start clicking away on the ads scattered everywhere in front of them.

OK, in the long term, perhaps ThaiVisa will suffer a bit due to a few high post-count members leaving and not writing any more of their good quality content on the site's pages. But I guarantee if every member stopped posting today, ThaiVisa would go on making money for many months to come based solely on the masses of archived data that has been built up over the years, and which is still being ranked highly in Google's databases.

Yes, that makes sense. But if you follow it to its logical conclusion, the whole point of the board would seem to be lost. In any case, we can only wait and see.

Yes, quite, it's a worrying trend...

I'm still getting fooled by them and when I open a new thread my mouse sticks on the ad under the first post so I can't scroll. Doesn't happen once you've done it once but still, come on :o

To be honest, I don't even notice ads - unless they block info in a post, which they sometimes do...

I wouldn't be surprised if there were people involved in this board who considered the opinion/discussion forums more trouble than they're worth.
