To all my fellow Brits out there who so adamently claim that its more dangerous In Blighty than it is here.

Answer me this.

I went to a village party the other day in rural Surin 3 cops were having a booze tooled up and still it was nessecary to have a local lad walking around with a pump action and a pocket full of shells.

you don't get that at St josephs parrish fete do ya?

I ain't saying it is and I aint saying it isn't I just know that LOS has alot of bad guys rocking about and people should'nt be so dam_n ignorant.

Second you there, lot of ignorant <expletive removed by mods> around unfortunately.

I really feel sorry for this victim and his beloved ones, lot of suffering ahead for them. Hope they catch the criminal and punish him severely.

In Phuket the few times I've been there there was once two teenagers who tried to rob me, I was more lucky than I could hope for and got away from it without much harm. Also in the province I live there are regular robbing and shootings, kidnapping of kids, kids taken and put in child prostitution, and 1/2 falangs are highly priced so beware, and a lot of crap which floats under the surface. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time it can be you in Thai Visa we read about.

Must the victim rest in peace.

Safer than any big city in the States. Moral is: Don't get into anything bigger than you.

percent homicides committed with firearms Thailand is Number 1 in the world.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_gun_...icides-firearms

And murders with firearms per capita thailand is number 3 in the world compared to U.S. at number 8. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_gun_...per-100-000-pop

But this 3 vs 8 is highly misleading because: Thailand has 33 per 100,000 and the U.S. has a mere 3.6 So Thailand has about TEN TIMES more murders with firearms per capita than the U.S.

Non firearm homicide rate per 100,000, Thailand again wins handily over U.S.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_gun_...per-100-000-pop

Couple all that with Thailand's murder per capita rate being TWICE as high as the U.S.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_...ders-per-capita

NOT TO MENTION THE MANY THAT GO UNREPORTED IN THAILAND

The statistics of Nationmaster have been proved faulty in the past. I don't see why we should start believing them now.

Look at the figures in your last link: "Murders (per capita) (most recent)": #14 Thailand: 0.0800798 per 1,000 people

Now look at the figures in your second link: "Firearm homicide rate > per 100,000 pop. (most recent)": #3 Thailand: 33.0016

So, according to the first link there are 8 murders per 100,000 people and yet the second link states there are 33 murders per 100,000 people solely by firearms.

Conclusion: Nationmaster is crap.

I have to admit to being shocked by guyinthailand's stats.

I have lived here, Bangkok, on and off for 7 years and have never encountered the level of crime that these stats would indicate.

I come from Ireland where crime seems to be rampant and gun crime is on the rise.

Nationmaster seems to be using wikipedia as its source for some stats and a UN report covering 1998-2000 for others.

Well, I was in Pattaya in Nov, I saw a yankee getting his head kick with a wooden rod. Thailand is no different than any country, but generally speaking only the a$$hole will get done over for being disrespectful. Thai people are generally very friendly, but don't p1ssed them off, these little dudes can a lot of damage.

Im not normally one of those speculators on here, and ive never claimed to be a Sherlock Holmes. In fact, im also one of those who hate it when all the detectives come out of the woodwork when threads like this start.

But... I cant help agreeing that samui1 has raised a VERY good point there :o

you are the one with his head in the sand. sure some % of the the murders in thailand are random but they happen far more often here than nearly every place else in the world...its not random luck, a lot of people get into a lot of stuff here that can get you killed. thai people do not value life and its easy to have somebody whacked here.

having been in thailand over three years and gotten into some pretty fuc_ked up shit with some pretty fuc_ked up people in that time, i can honestly say if i did it all over again 10 times, i'd probably be dead at least 2 of them. if i stayed in the states for those three years and lived how i would have, i'd die probably 1 in 500 times, or less. i might have gone to jail or prison but there is no way id' have died from anything but a car accident or plane crash or soemthing like that.

now i know better than to do the kinds of things i've done with the kinds of people i've done it, but it is absolutely a lot more likely to be killed in thailand than it is in the states, for the type of people who are getting killed in thailand. you don't get whacked in the states if a relationship with a woman goes south, if you have a dispute with a business partner or if your girlfriend already had a husband and you didnt know it, and now he wants your car.

33/100,000 does not mean people get shot whilst walking down the street, that is not a lot of murders if you go on an 'i've never seen somebody get shot' basis. it is just a lot more than other countries.

just look at these threads. multiple people in every thread have stories about this. if you look at a forum of people all living in a big western city and there is a thread about murders in that city, you are not going to have multiple people in the thread all talking about how they also almost got murdered in the city.

ya if you come to thailand and lead a quiet life and work at a bank and marry a nice quiet thai girl from a good family who also works at a bank you are probably never gonna have problems or see this kinda thing. if you do like most farang do and come and drink and booze and hang out with hookers and do all that sorta stuff, your chances of this kinda stuff happening skyrockets...mix in some drugs and/or owning real estate and now you are playing russian roullette.

It seems to me that "getting out a bit more" with violent crime on the rise might just be the last thing you should be advising people to do!

It's happening all over the country, not just the pleasure spots !

The general lack of mutual respect on Expats and Thai's behalf could well be the problem, in 10 years I have seen a marked decline.

I asked a mature Thai lady to move her car a little so that I could get mine out and let her have the parking space, only to be told in perfect English "to F off" and that was from a very well presented lady.

So if they can get that "pissed off" when you're being polite just imagine the what they will do if they think you have cheated them !

I'm planning to spend two weeks with my family in Phuket and it's simply sad all what happens...

However, one must understand how this will be coming our way -unfortunately- around the world and due to the entire ugly situation that has a lot of people without the minimal amounts for the minimal requirements....

On top of everything, touristic areas of Thailand might get weird, since the "brilliant idea" of blocking airports has incredible numbers of people in the streets and that industry seems to have no answers to the taught lack of visitors... at least during 2009-2010... :o

We should remain vigilant and careful to protect our families and still enjoy some...

Well you have seen nothing YET. With the onset of large scale unemployment its going to get worse. Don't forget for Thais no money = starvation.

Farang property brokers turning up dead has nothing to do with unemployment, and everything to do with the Democrats being back in power in Bangkok. The local warlords are once again untouchable.

No money, yet a Rolex, cash, and gold left at the scene? More like somebody's mia noi needs a new Mercedes after a tough shopping trip to Hong Kong and a few days in the casinos at Macau. What better way to fund that than with a few quick property turns.

Dollars to donuts, this is another one where the investigation goes nowhere, as the local constabulary will be monetarily encouraged to pursue another "domestic dispute" possibility. If the investigator doesn't cooperate, the folks in parliament and their yellow-shirted supporters in Phuket can make sure the unlucky policeman is transferred to an 'inactive' post escorting teachers in Yala.

The last sentence is the most true statement someone has made on this topic so far. The local Cop Apirak, has been forced to move out of Phuket, because he actually took a hard stance on crime, wanting to implement 500 security cameras and many other things. Sure, i am not saying he is a saint, but he actually seems to want to do something about the crime in Phuket, and has now been forced to leave Phuket and go somewhere else. You can read on the phuketwan website, second link down if you search for Apirak.

I was also asked to give a quote not long ago for some security cameras in Phuket, and the police chief of this district told me he needed 4m baht or less spent on the cameras, but we need to add 2mb on top for him, because he didn't know how long he will be positioned here.

On another note, I was driving back from Phuket Town last weekend, and 3 lads about 16 were driving 1 scooter, and looked at me, and pulled out a 2foot machete, which scared me a bit, so I backed off.

Crime will go up, it always does as people get desperate, the shit has yet to hit the fan in Thailand, although I think it will really get bad starting from next month.

Both of you just need to chill out a little I reckon. Some guy gets a home invasion and unfortunately gets killed in the process. Happens everywhere, sometimes accidental, sometimes something else. No reason to get all uppity on your high horse about the modern decay of thai society. Nor is it a reason to speculate on the true cause of death. The asian outlook on life and death is totally different to your western perspective. Its a huge shame that this has happened and deepest condolences must go out to his family. To turn this into anything other than an unfortunate accident without any other information or evidence to hand is a shame and, in itself, sullies his memory!

We are beginning to see the results of a very bad economy in Thailand where money and people disappear.

This indicates a message from somebody of power and money of his own.

The average Thai farmer could live most of the year on what the could pawn from even the cheapest Rolex... UNLESS THE GUY BOUGHT IT A MBK or JJ MARKET!

The fact that the beheaded still had a Rolex and cash on him would indicate something our friends from the old "USSR" would do to send a message to end any games played on them. The message: We have taken the head of the snake to stop any future thoughts of playing anymore games".

Is this another case of...

a farang losing his head over a girl?

a farang not thinking with his head on straight?

a farang trying to think with his smaller head and losing himself in the process?

Some say he lost his head because he separated from the reality of his problems.

He was torn apart by matters of the head and heart, his head no longer wanted to go where his heart took him.

ONE THING FOR SURE, WE KNOW THAT CAUSE OF DEATH WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO LIVE WITHOUT HIS HEAD SCREWED ON STRAIGHT!!!

Who said you can't get "a head" in Bangkok? We HAVE TWO!!!

Hopefully, this will not become the normal method of homicide in Bangkok. That will definitely have an effect on tourism and the Thai economy.

The Southern borders of Thailand have used machete' even on Buddhist monks on drive by motorcycle killings over the last few years.

While there is the 'possibility' of suicide and the body separating from the body because of weak neck muscles, the type of rope used, a fat body... it is unlikely.

Suicide came in the form of knowingly continuing to tick someone off by not giving them what they wanted and taking the chance of calling their bluff.

The upside is this man no longer has to pay taxes, be lied to, have his heart broken and all his suffering in this life is over.

Unfortunately, it will be his family if he has any that will now carry the burden of his suffering.

Nothing in this life is permanent, even this life.

Very sad for his families :D I wish, he is now in peace. As a Thais live in Phuket. I realize that the economic is going down now and the crime rate would be more. It is not Thai or Farang. We all love each other but there are also many bad people out there. They don't want to work for clean money. They just steal and kill basicly. Thai Police!! Well, it is sad to say that I don't think that they can't help you much, unlike the FBI and CIA program I watch from the television. You need to take care of yourself and your belonging now. I can think about somethings like......

- Make sure your car is locked and safely park. If you park in mall, park your car where it can be seen by the camera.

- If you have a housekeeper or gardener, pls, don't show them your jewelry box. I believe that they are nice people but when the economic is going down like this, it is hard to predict what they have in mind.

- Please, don't talk on the phone alone on the street at night, some bad people might come on the bike or behind you cause they know that your attention is on the phone.

- When you are riding the motorbike, don't put your valuable stuffs in the front basket or bag around your shoulder. I heard that bad people will come on the bike and grab it or pull your handbag out of your shoulder.

- Make sure that your lock at the house isn't kind of the lock that can cut through. How I can say...I know that some locks can be opened by just a card. Get double lock if you can.

- Ohh! and this is for Farang gentlemen,......If you're in the relationship with Thai ladies, you really don't need to buy the property or cars and put on their name if you're still not sure about your relationship with her. You can let her sign the paper before marriage, and you can cancel that later, right!. It is sad to me when I heard of Thai ladies rib off Farang. As you know, there are many nice ladies and not so nice, I hope you have a great one.

That's all I can think about now...... I wish, all of you have a good time, living in Phuket. Thai people love you (if you're a nice farang) :-) . We are friend on the planet. I hope that there will be no more sad news. Try to do meditation, do the sport you like ===> get the stress out everyone!! :o

so my advice unless ur willing to die for the shit he will take let him take what he wants.

Someone once told me a unloaded gun is more dangereous than a loaded one and ONLY carry a gun if ur willing to kill someone

Its not Farangs vs Thai's or such. Look at the southern trouble and thats been going on for years now. Thais are a very violent race.
