Thai's Obsession With Gore

Featured Replies

I wanted to post this in general at first, but then I thought here it is a bit more appropriate...

I get from Thai acquaintances once in a while e-mails with pictures you should not watch before breakfast....be it aborted fetus or the remains from Santika victims.

Today I got a mail with a bunch of pictures showing a naked woman that is literally getting slaughtered. I made it to the maybe 4th or 5th picture and then I just deleted it. Too much for my stomach. Spare me the details, but it was horrific and looked damned real!

The whole day I had two big questions in my mind: What is the background story to this and why do Thais love to forward this stuff?

I have no idea and I have no care to find out, but there are some things that are forwarded to me from non-Thais that should never darken my screen, or anybody else's for that matter.

My first thought on seeing this topic was that the average Thai wouldn't know Al Gore if he bit them on the bum.

After reading it I have to say that I haven't experienced these kind of emails before. :o

I get some from an Aussie copper which are a bit iffy sometimes.

I don't think it's just a Thai thing, there's this appalling site called rottendotcom that was popular a few years back that I was talked into looking at that had images which are still engraved on my memory.

right....heard about rottendotcom....never bothered to look as I never had the wish becoming a coroner. So I agree...it is not just a Thai thing, however I received stuff like that from Thais only - maybe that's why my perception was biased.

the mail from yesterday was apparently about human trafficking - still not sure why they cut that woman up..

it was the same with the fire on NYE, i recieved these images about 20 times from different Thais

but in the west, i will recieve chain emails with funny images ect ( or even sick ) but never would i recieve something like that ( santika )

Don't know if its still around but when our bungalows were being built the builders left a 191 magazine laying around. Most horrific piece of awfulness I had ever seen. It amazed me that such a magazine could even be on sale, much less that there would be interest in it.

saw once a copy of that 191 magazine...yes, it would be an interesting exercise in psychology to determine what exactly makes people to buy it...

I know rottendotcom...

You sure it weren't a certain aussie fireman :o

Did anyone else think this thread was going to be yet another global warming one? In the circs, I probably would've preferred it.

I'm fully aware of whom you're referring to and fortunately that gentlemen is not in personal contact with me.

Which is surprising considering some of our previous history....

OC was saying he's still posting here under another nick. So you never know.

I'm pretty sure it was BritMaveric who posted those pics on another forum. (OrientExpat I believe)

Shocking in more ways than one! :o

I like your new av Bags - a bit hard to read the writing, but a nice line. What will it be next week?

I've got heaps more.

This one is actually my old TD one. It seemed appropriate over there.

But then, the Thai are a voyeuristic bunch anyway, don't you think? I mean, the cameras follow victims right to their hospital bedside and neither the patient or the hospital staff seem to think it's strange. The TV news are forever showing CCTV footage of hapless souls being blown apart in the South. Nearly every night you'll see bodies on the roadside surrounded by a ring of onlookers and no-one helping (I remember once when I was new in LOS, getting out of the car and going over to one such scene to help as you would back home. The gawkers let me know that you don't want to get involved as the BiB would just assume you were responsible and were helping because you felt guilty) . I still get that awful wrenching feeling when I drive by but the missus just urges me to keep going. I hate it and I'll know that it's time to head back to Blighty when I can witness another broken, crumpled heap by the road and experience no emotion.

I blame it on the way Thai's do not think twice about exposing their kids to horror movies and gore filled action flicks.

Note I do not have a problem with either type of movie but I strongly object to 3 year olds watching them, but unfortunately that happens here with astonishing regularity :o

But is that cause or effect?

^(If it was the effect, it must have had the same root cause, but the reverse isn't necessarily the case.)

Here, toddlers are allowed to be taken into 'R' rated (if that's what they're calling them this week) movies on the basis that they are too young to be cognisant of what's going on. But as to older people, does anyone still doubt that people of a certain mentality/mental disposition can be influenced by images and words - even in fiction? How many times have we learnt of a ne'er-do-well being influenced in their criminal actions by something they have seen in film or read in the paper? If a greater majority of people were affected so, perhaps censorship might be even tighter. The problem is that constant exposure to this sort of thing can desensitise people - more particularly the young and impressionable. You don't need to be a Jethro Bodine to work that out...

The latest school mass murderer (in Germany) was apparently heavily influenced by online computer shooting games - especially the violent Counter-Strike.

I guess he was desensitised to strong violence.

Yes, exzachary - that's one of the various possible ramifications.

What I meant was, are the Thai interested in blood and guts because of their film industry's obsession with it or do the studios make so many violent films because they know their audience has a taste for it?

I see a parallel with the vast number of ghost-type films made here. The Thai, as we all know, are fascinated with anything to do with ghosts, spooks, spirits, etc. I'm sure that this part of their national character is far, far older than the movies. I would suggest that the movie industry, in this case, is merely reflecting something that is built-into the national psyche.

Possibly the same is true with violent films?
