British Tv Shows

Featured Replies

Why is a seaon of a TV show only six episodes? Or is this only comedy, or only done in the past? I was rewatching Fawlty Towers and Blackadder and noticed this, so I am veyr curious.

Also, why does BBC America have all the same dumb shows we yanks have only casted in the UK? Who came up with these first and WHY?

Cheers,

Not a cookin' flue mate.

The six episode season may have something to do with the length of time it takes to produce six episodes.

Television is nothing more than the universal opiate designed to keep people happy and unquestioning. Even the standard of the investigative documentaries has gone down to the level of docudramas.

I think you would find that in most cases the original TV show concept started in Britain and was later adopted by America.

Examples are "The Office" and "Life on Mars"

I'm sure there are also examples the other way.

Can you name a few of the shows for us.

There was a shocking American adaption of Fawlty Towers (I think it was called "Payne"??). I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

Oh my God, no. Did they?

But then, this was the nation that actually thought that Benny Hill was funny! I mean to say...

And Red Dwarf.

This I am sad to agree with. No such thing as jouralism anymore, just emotional driven propaganda.

I can't remember names to all but I remember content. Reality TV crap like people coming into your home to teach you how to clean, or how to lose weight. I remember one name, Cash in the Attic. Why are people on both sides of the pond obessed with this drivel. Or is it just us yanks and the UK only makes to export it? Because BBC America is dominated by these shows.

I never thought Benny Hill was funny, and I have never seen Red Dwarf, but I do know about it, some kind of Hitchhiker wanna be right?

That's because you have a brain, mate.

I despise Thai TV and its blatant "beer-and-circuses", "keep-the-plebs-happy" approach. Not that surprising when you consider that the army controls, directly or indirectly, most of the Thai media. So different from the quality stuff on British TV, right? So I thought.

I had to go back to the UK in Jan/Feb and was appalled to see that the BBC seems to be a shadow of its former self. I realise that it's been in a ratings war with commercial TV for quite some time but they seem to have abandoned any sort of aspiration towards quality. I thought it was dire. Apart from the News, I think I only saw one decent prog (a documentary about the Philippines) and that might have been on C4, come to think of it. Ok, things like Horizon (still on?) and Timewatch weren't "in season" when I was there but I'm sure it was better even a few years ago.

Either that or I'm older and more cynical than even I had suspected.

P.S. Oh, and Top Gear which was great. :o

Even five years ago, that was the only prog I would turn the box on for, the rest of the time it stayed cold. Everything else that I wanted to watch I already had or could get in digital format.

Hey, Thad, did you see the one where they each bought a different motorbike and drove them up the coast of Vietnam? I thought taht would make a good basis for a short holiday.

Top Gear was just added to the list of shows on BBC America. Neat to watch when I get a change, but that is informative, even if it is expensive toys! :D I just get Netflix to send me older UK shows that I grew watching until I can get the money to buy my own copy. After years of not seening some of them I still laugh my arse off. Forgive me but I can't at the moment remember the main ariter for Blackaddder but I remember him saying truely good shows, he was talking about sitcoms mind you, come around once every ten years. I am thinking he is right.

The reason i am up so late is the fact that -

Having missed it on Christmas Day - I watched 2 hours of the Royle Family on u tube!!

It was great, ok not the big flat screen dooda but did ok on the computer. Very funny.

Then i sidled onto a bit of Stephen Fry . QI

Then the comic relief with Robbie Williams and Satan

Then a bit of an irish guy.

Then a bit of an american

So, have had a good comical evening

And a giggle, which is all that counts. At least i didn't blast out axl. - YET

I thought Benny Hill was funny when I was 10 years old....but I always had a nagging feeling that anyone who went on so much about women must be covering something up (gay ?). Liked the little guy...Alf Garnett I think. Got to admit that Benny did have a talent.....how to stretch out a simple piece of sexual innuendo into a lifelong television career. Kenny Everett tried it without nearly so much success. Guess he should have got himself a short bald sidekick too.

I see the British as masters of television comedy. One of the few US sitcoms I really enjoyed was Seinfeld, whereas I could name dozens of British comedy shows/performers that appeal to my sense of humour. Of course, when it comes to drama series and motion pictures, the Americans clearly have the upper hand.

:o As I was watching this saw Fatal Beatings on the side, one of my favorites!!

Life on mars is one of the best shows to come out of UK in years imo, I dread to think what kind of butcher job the Americans have done on it!!! I hear there is an attempt at Ab fab being made too. noooooo.

Life on Mars is a BAFTA and Emmy-winning British science fiction and police drama television series.

BUT..........

The Ammurrican version, the series was adapted from the BAFTA-winning British series of the same name, shown by the BBC.

Dunno why, leaves me cold.

From IMDB ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478942/episodes#season-1 ) :-

After being involved in a car accident in 2006, DCI Sam Tyler (Simm) wakes up to find himself in 1973, the era of 'Sweeney' type policing, Mark III Cortinas, and flared trousers.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I tried to get into the American version too, but it just didn't seem to work.

Believe it's been dropped after one season.

The British version is fab, I never thought I would like it so didn't initially catch it when it was first shown but after being laid up ill one weekend I caught it on a re-run & am hooked, I have just finished the first series but hear that series 2 wasn't as good. I'm hoping that isn't true.

It is really clever & funny but with dark moments thrown in. If anyone has not managed to see it then def try to get hold of it.

Its the best thaibebob.

Got the 2 series boxset in Pantip and downloading sequal as we speak (Ashes to Ashes)

Boo: series 2 is good IMHO. Not yet sure about Ashes to Ashes. there is a rumor that a new series planned this year

The story is about a presentday detective who is knocked down by a car and is transported back to 1973 as a detective in a very non politically correct Manchester Police force and time.

Sorry this description does not do the show justice, I reccommend a viewing just for the old cars and fashion :o

Dave

Cheers Dave, I have had mixed reviews about S2 but I just love the show & have a rather sick crush on DCI Hunt :o

"You say that like it's a bad thing" Hunts reply after being called an overweight, bigotted, homophobic, racist, borderline alcoholic :D
