Thai Banks To Start Charging For Atm Withdrawals ...

Recommended Posts

Can you provide a list? I've tried their website ( http://www.aeonthailand.com/ ) but all links are bad.

I'd really like to know how to find other AEON ATMs in my area (since the one I was using got closed down recently...[big frown] )

Ballzafire, I have previously have prepared and posted an AEON list for Bkk, but I assume that won't help you much... But I did a search of the AEON web site...and found the following result for the Song Khla area...

Their web site shows they have two offices in your area, which typically include ATMs.... Their web site also says they have no standalone ATMs in your area.

AEON Spot Hat Yai Julladhit Had Yai Plazza 1st Fl., 200 Room No.102,104,106,108,114,116, Niphatuthit 3 Had Yai , Songkhla 90110 (074) 271000 (074) 355297-9

Open : 9.00 Close : 21.00

2 AEON Spot Carrefour Hadyai 677 Carrefour Hadyai Petkaseam Rd., Hadyai , Songkla 90110 (074)469181-2 (074)469-183

Aeon are now charging the 150baht fee. We used one in Tesco Lotus Wang Hin Bangkok and they now charge the fee. So basically there are no ATMs you can use now. CHances are if your Aeon is not charging, then it will soon. Guess we will need to transfer money in via another route?

This looks good: http://www.currenciesdirect.com On the other thread, a TV member recommends them. To be honest I am fed up running round ATMs getting money; having a regular amount available every month in my Kasikorn bank paid from the UK would save all the hassel and worry. Worry is 'Will I have a problem with my card, and if so, I won't have any money'.

jfchandler, Appreciate the repost of AEON ATMS. I had not used them for there where GSB machines close by where I stayed but now they are charging I shall use AEON.

With AEON having their HQ in the Exchange Tower at Asoke, are you aware of any ATM there? I had emailed them querying that but, as expected. no response.

Sorry JGM, I don't know the answer on that.... But it's near my home, and I've been meaning to stop by sometime to see. Maybe I can soon. Until then, I've been alternating between the basement of Paragon and Carrefour Onnut.

Can anyone else confirm what MaiChai claims? It is a bit of a non-issue to me since there are no AEON ATMs in Phatthalung where my in-laws reside. Nevertheless, it will be useful to know the next time I travel to Thailand.

I am in Khon Kaen and there is an Aeon branch opposite the fairy plazza with 4 cash dispense/deposit machines inside. Used one last night and as far as I am aware NO FEE.

So the next question is when will AEON finally give in into charging the 150 baht fee? I'd give it until maybe the end of this year before they keel over. My observations from the AEON ATMs in my neck of the woods:

- I have only seen 2 AEON ATMs which are located in a Central shopping mall in the banking areas.

- 1 of which is always out of service.

- The lines to use the single working ATM seems to always have between 7-15 Thai's waiting to use it!

- The single time I tried to use it, the maximum allowed withdrawal was a pitiful 7k THB.

Since my foreign bank charges $5/per overseas withdrawal, I canceled of course.

Since the ATM fiasco started in April, my alternative chosen was just to keep currency in my home country in Euro's which has gone up nicely against the Baht since then. I wire enough THB every quarter here to keep me covered and that's it...

I've withdrawn up to 20,000 in a single transaction from an AEON ATM, and others I believe have withdrawn even more. I've never tried to do any more than 20K in a single pull.

So clearly, AEON machines, in and of themselves, aren't limited to 7,000.

That said, sometimes, machines run out of 1,000 baht notes, and then start dispensing 500 or even 100 baht notes. Likewise, people can have varying daily withdrawal limits imposed by their home banks.

Also, of course, if someone had a $500 daily withdrawal limit, and did another ATM pull or debit in the same 24 hour period, then their cash amount available for withdrawals would be reduced.

As we are left (currently) with one company Aeon with fee free ATM machines which doesn't appear to be wide spread except perhaps BKK, it would be nice to either start here or begin a new thread to have members list the banks that allow you to withdraw cash at the teller counter using their debit card.

Perhaps providing the following,

bank name, city and location

did the bank give you the option of swiping your card, since from what I have read here, this is preferable in order to get the current rate?

method of withdrawal, swiping card or paper transaction. did you need to enter your pin?

confirming the rate you got and the date the withdrawal was posted to your account.

was it free of any fees from the Thai bank, not to be confused with any fees your home bank may charge?

was it easy or were there non-Thai language issues?

anything else?

Since my visa allows me to only certify my required monthly income, I choose to keep my money in my home country banks, my concern living in a foreign country, is having my card swallowed up by a machine or being short changed, which happened twice, so I am in the habit of using branch ATM machines during banking hours just in case of a problem. I wouldn't mind going back to the old days, when you went up to the teller counter with a withdrawal slip, swiped your card and walked away every time with the correct cash (I have been machine short changed twice) and your card in hand with no chance of machine swallowing cards or though it hasn't happened to me yet, for some of us memory challenged folks, walking away without the card.

Truth #2: Account holders who have an E*Trade checking account or the Charles Schwab Bank high yield checking or savings accounts are having pretty good luck with getting their Thai ATM fees reimbursed when they are incurred. I've incurred a couple with my E*Trade account/card (mostly testing for purposes of reporting here), and each time the fee has been reimbursed immediately, in-full, without any need to call or contact the bank.

Regarding Schwab, while they are reimbursing the fees, unlike eTrade, they are waiting until the end of the month.

As far as Fidelity, I have pending fee reimbursement and I am waiting until the end of the month to see if they have fixed the problem of automatically reimbursing the ATM fees.

As mentioned before Fidelity is also refunding the ATM charges when you use their card in Thailand, though you have to make a telephone call to get them reimbursed and your call is might cause confusion and turn into a lengthy call.

Just don't get to cozy thinking these AEONs are going to be fee-free forever.

You are correct.

I have heard rumors that they plan to change their policy, by giving foreign card users, an additional 100baht reward for using their machines. I plan to withdraw 1000 baht each time, to reap the reward. That will teach those other greedy banker ba$tards.

Well, have you tried his method, and been refused?

Some report that its still acceptable in some banks/exchange booths, while others report the teller pointing to the ATM outside, and dealing with the next person waiting.

And, like has been said on here, it wont be that long until Aeon turn towards the dark side and levy a charge, too. Their ATMs must be taking a hammering and a lot of extra refillings and such.

I have never tried an over the counter withdrawal, primarily because (1) I have several fee free cards and didn't need to, and (2) until recently I thought you could only do paper processed transactions which could take up to 3 business days but found out here that some folks have had their cards swiped at the counter to make real time withdrawals.

I'm just looking for more information about this process so I know I may have another free option if I travel or Aeon stops their nice gift.

I'm not sure if there will be an increased run on Aeon machines. We know there are a number of people here on TV who, knowing that there were 3 fee free banks (months ago), still couldn't be bothered to save the "small" fee (as some put it) of 150b. Some even ridiculed those of us who wanted to share information about saving this fee.

I suspect the information on this thread isn't widely known by most tourists and expats.

Ok, double checked with (the intelligent) girlfriend. She says the Aeon machine in Wang Hin, Bangkok now charges 150baht. The nasty thing about it is it does not warn you before you take the money, it gives you the money and then pops a message saying you have been charge 150 baht! So it sounds like a hasty software upgrade to the ATM machines.

Thus as others have said they have moved to the dark side and are charging for this now. Maybe its the case that they got overloaded when everyone started using their machines, and they had the choice of either putting up with this or fall inline with the other banks?

Re AEON, that seems very strange.... and it seems your account is from another person...not directly from yourself...

I did my last AEON ATM withdrawal on the 13th in BKK, and had no fee...

That, and...every other Thai bank that I have seen charging the 150 baht ATM fee DOES have an ATM video screen notice warning you of the fee before you finalize the withdrawal.... The Thai banks (BKK, SCB, Ayudhya, etc.) are at least doing that.

Haha. Yes we have a special foreign card that costs very little to get money from abroad. When I go abroad I give the card to the gf so she can get money to look after my kids. Since we only use that foreign account for this purpose I put money in this acct as we need it, and she then draws the money out. Thus if the card gets stolen or misused in any way, the liability is minimal, and its a debit card so its not possible to spend more than is in the account. I know I am not the only one that uses this card in this way... Needless to say I won't mention the foreign bank name or account other than its a British bank and alot of folks in Los use this bank specifically for getting money out in Los without paying a fee (until Visa hiked up their fees this year).

Some conflicting information now on whether Aeon Bank ATMs are charging the 150 baht fee.

I was at the Jusco on Sukumvit Soi 71 today (October 15), and thought I did not withdraw money, I did note that the ATM screen still says, in both English and Thai, that they DO NOT charge the 150 baht fee.

Time will tell as more board members use these machines in the next few weeks.

The last time I went to UOB, I thought they still were not charging the 150b fee. I requested money and then got the new message but the area on the screen where an amount should show was blank so I figured they are probably planning to begin charging soon but not just yet. I proceeded and noticed that the receipt did print the fee of 150b. I went into the branch and requested my fee back. After waiting 20 minutes the officer told me to come back next week. I said ok. Came back next week and I figured I would get the money but it appeared they didn't do anything after I left. I waited another 20 minutes while the manager was on the phone with the responsible department and she said she could not give me the money back because the back office could not believe that the screen did not show the fee even after the manager admitted that the previous day, a Japanese man complained about the same thing. To cut to the chase, I shamed them into giving me the money by (1) accusing the bank of calling me a liar about seeing the blank fee and (2) accusing the bank of taking (stealing) 150b without my permission. I felt bad for the manager since she is the one that took the brunt of my annoyance, not the irresponsible people, in charge of the machine software maintenance, who couldn't admit to their mistake.

Is it possible that the IGF saw AEON's "we do not charge" message and thought it said that she WAS being charged? ( TiT . . . :) )

A couple of hours ago I withdrawn 50 000,- from Aeon ATM Big C opposite immigration, Chaeng Watthana. First I withdrawn 40 000,-.

Then I went for 10 000 extra. No fee! Exchange rate I don't know.... (the limit from my homeland bank is 60 000.- per 7 days)

Warning: On the deposit slip they print out your credit-card number, from A to Z, I haven't seen this before :)
