Mumbai Siege: Anger Of British Survivors

Featured Replies

They survived the Mumbai siege but Will Pike and Kelly Doyle are now facing a bureaucractic battle they could never have imagined.

Five months after the terror attacks which claimed the lives of more than 170 people, the couple from north London say they have been abandoned by the Government since they returned home.

Will, 29, will never walk again after falling as he tried to escape from a third floor bedroom in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

Now the couple want to see the law changed so that they and others caught in terror attacks overseas receive adequate help and compensation from the UK authorities.

Will said: "If you're say a foreign national and you come to the UK as a tourist and you get caught up in a terrorist event say like the July 7 bombings, the criminal injuries compensation will offer you a settlement of up to £500,000.

"However if you're a UK citizen and you go abroad that money isn't available to you".

By that very logic, shouldn't they be seeking compensation from the Indian Government, not the UK one.

Yup agreed, they're likely entitled to Rs50,000 (670 Quid), they would get Rs300,000 (4020 Quid) if they died, life is somewhat cheaper here :)

Well they will get disability allowances, probably a free motability car, home help etc. etc. but life will certainly never be the same :)

There is pretty well zero help available for those injured whilst abroad which is why we pay vast sums for travel insurance (well my company does) so that I get home dead or alive if something nasty happens (and I am covered for terrorist activity, I checked after Mumbai).

It is a travesty that not all travel insurance covers for terrorist activities, it should be automatic. But I would assume that someone staying at the Taj (even on a company account) would have half decent travel insurance and a life insurance policy that pays a package on permanent disability.

you would think, but when i have taken travel insurance before i have never read the small print, and to be honest who thinks while taking out travel insurance, hey you dont cover me for terroist attacks ! , its something that never realy crosses your mind or you refuse to accept that maybe yes you will get involved............

i hope they do get help !, but sandard disabilty allownce in the uk is not much ....... , maybe with the publicilty the indian goverment can pay the more then a few quid

If anything Boats this situation just sums up how much the UK Gov is a soft touch instead of what the news agency article was trying to achieve..... non-Brit nationals who were injured in the 7/7 incident got paid out irrespective of their travel insurance status ...... from (the old cliche) tax-payers money..... and because of that, some Brits traveling abroad expect the same help without lifting a finger to cover themselves when something unexpected happens.

Sorry, just another team of hacks pointing fingers at everything hoping something will stick.

I got stuck in Thailand during the fun and games last year. I paid 20,000bt to get a flight from Chiang Mai to Singapore so I could catch a flight home. When I tried to claim the 20k on my travel insurance they told me to sod off because they didn't cover 'civil commotions'. Bah! Humbug!
