cdnvic Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Forget Redhat. Its buggy and slower than wondows. Remember that Linux is a type of "Unix" and there are other variations such as freeBSD that are as good or better than Linux. These opinions are mine and others will have their favourites. Since they're free I suggest you download a few and try them out before making a choice. Unix operating systems are a bit more difficult to get used to than windows. Some you get on CD may have a windows type of look to them called GNOME. These would be a bit easier for you to learn unless you are familiar with working from a command line. A few websites to look through: http://www.linux.org/ This site has most types of linux listed and explained along with links to download them or purchase cds. http://www.freebsd.org/ The freeBSD project. Worth reading as its a very stable operating system. Good luck! cv

I want a recommend which Linux is good?Yes, there are a lot. Good and bad. It always depends on your needs. For a beginner i would recommend the Mandrake Linux because of the easy and simple installation process and the very good hardware detection.Forget Redhat. Its buggy and slower than wondows... True, but i'm using it anyway... MistaDorn, i wish you good luck in the process of leaving the M$ Software behind you. Once you've done, you will be much more happy.

bkk_mike Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Do you know what you want to use Linux for? i.e. If you're wanting to run a database server / web server, you should check the applications you want to run, and see which distributions are supported. (You will probably be able to get them to work on others, but it might be a lot of work...) If nothing else, that might shorten the list of distros that you're looking at. If you're planning on just playing with Linux, it doesn't really matter which one you choose. (Although if you want OpenOffice, and other major apps. it's less hassle to pick a distribution where it's included on the installation disks).
