As westerners, we tend to compartmentalise things, i.e.

Religion is Judaism, Christianity or Islam. We tend to dismiss Buddhism and Hinduism as philosophies.

Science is biology, chemistry or physics. We tend to dismiss anything outside of these boundaries as, paranormal, superstition or even hocus pocus.

Is it possible, there is a science that we westerners have yet to recognised, yet alone understand that Thais have an understanding of?

Except for Judaism, Christianity or Islam?

Do Thai people know more than us Farangs ?

How many Thai people have lost a fortune in a relationship with a Farang?

How many Farangs have lost a fortune in a relationship with a Thai ?

Would a Thai guy go on holiday to the UK, meet a girl, buy her a house and send her family money every month ?

Maybe the Thai people are just smarter than the average Farang. :)

you can do better than to reply that way to the not-so-smart question of the OP.

Should the average Thai have better knowledge about things in general , or a greater form of simple logic, or is a more able thinker than the average Farang , he is hiding out there somewhere in la-la land patting himself on the back , or calculating his rice yield at harvest time as he sits and does the hard job of watching it grow . This does not include the few Thai that have great potential if they were aware first that they have this potential , then second what to do with it when they discover what it is , their biggest claims to fame are corruption and ripping off lots of the stupid Farang that call thailand home , or the gullible ones who have managed to find the last remaining female in the land that is 'Different ' to all of the ones that have scored litterally billions of $s just for uttering the few words of English they realy understand "I luv you hansum man ".

What's not so smart about the question?

I wouldn't say "Thai" only, but groups in general that also acknowledge other dimensions of life which cannot be rationalised as we tend to do in the West.

What's not so smart about the question?

the generalisation of the assumed "we" group.

the "we" vs. Thai binary image.

your basic basic assumption at all.

i have now re-read your OP a couple of times. it's maybe only somewhat awkwardly formulated.

the who nows MORE question has provoking undertone, can be misunderstood here in that board full of opinions that are nothing else than stereotypes and superiority complexes.

Any person you meet will know something you do not...................you can learn something from all people.......

And here was me thinking psychology, sociology, and economics are at least doing their best to be somewhat scientific- must be some other sciences rattling about somewhere...

When it comes to understanding how Thai social relationships function, I'm sure that's a science all on its own- that few foreigners will ever develop the full finesse for (including me)!

I don't think Thais know more than anybody , They know more about Thailand, than Falang,You could say that about Americans , this is not a go at America just a fact about 90% of Americans Have never been out of America , The same as Thais. this makes them insular about world affairs, When I was young i was taught right from wrong , that is you do not steal, tell lies , and life is precious. Why do some Thais not know this .

umm... who does that, specifically?

Foreign men coming here and losing all their money to a Thai women is not about knowledge, more so stupity and naivity.

I have travelled extensively around the world and rarely have i seen so much open racism and outright stupidity as displayed here...No, they do not know more than us foreigners. It does appear though that alot of foreigners come here and leave their brains at home, and there are plenty of Thais to take advantage of that.

LOL, yeah, they don't know more, "we just leave our brains at home."

Why leave it at just farangs? Why not all of mankind (except for the Thais) vs. the Thais?

I don't compartmentalise at all - all religion is superstition. You said it yourself that anything outside the boundaries of science is considered hocus pocus. Freudian slip?

When it comes to science, I tend to think the West has an upper hand, but that is not to say Thais know less about other things that affect them in Thailand. Each culture knows different things (not more or lesss, not better or worse) and put different priorities on what they deem important to themselves. As an example, some medicines are derived from the active ingredients in plants/herbs that locals have used in traditional medicine for generations. They are developed for everyone's benefit by science. The sum of everyone's different knowledge is indeed a strength of our species.

To answer the OP the way I interpreted his question, the average Thai I know (this coming from a view point of mostly knowing small town / rural Thais) knows a lot more than your average westerner.

Sure, they may not know the national capitals, but they are 100 times more knowledgeable/practical in most useful aspects of existence (growing food, making clothes etc) This is one huge reason why I have chosen to settle here... when the petrol stops flowing and the electricity goes out, who would you rather be more like: Somchai with a simplistic and fairly self sufficient lifestyle in a small village, or John the City trader in London battling for fresh water with millions of other people with nominal life skills?

I used to mock Thais for their lack of knowledge (I, myself, thought I was superior as I knew more about world affairs etc.) but the longer I spend here, the more I realise that it was me in my previous consumer dominated lifestyle who knew very little about what really counted... I am slowly emptying the glass of useless facts/figures/skills and trying to refill it with wisdom that is much more pertinent to my life here.

Cheers

When I was young i was taught right from wrong , that is you do not steal, tell lies , and life is precious. Why do some Thais not know this .

I think we all was thaught that when we were young.

Also in Thailand.

The answer to your question could relate to any country in the entire world, no matter culture, religion, etc.

Why do some Norwegians not know this?

Why do some Irish not know this?

Why do some (pick any nationality) not know this?

They do know this, but some choose not to put too much effort into this, as it turns out that they can live happily even if they cheat, lie, steal, etc.

What a depressive statement. I, on the other hand, think otherwise. Life is full of joy only because one lives with HOPE in heart.
