Hi!

I am thinking of buying a trike from China. The engine is 250cc and it cost approximately 2000 usd.

What are the import duty & tax for trike?

A friend of mine told me it will be between 77 and 213%.

Can i import it as motorbike ?

Can i License/Register and insure it?

Can i drive it on public roads?

Any info would be appreciated.

I think it will be not easy to bring it in...but there are others who know more about this than me...just wanted to say that it looks quite nice :-) If you get it in please post afterwards how it went.

Think the chances of a 3 wheeler being made legal are slim to none..

I remember when the law was quoted about ATV's it said motorcycles had to be 2 wheels..

Importing a new vehicle (especially one that you intend to register and drive on the roads) will be hundreds of percent in taxes...

People have imported cars which they've already owned for several years (a couple of threads to check through the search engine; import?) and that appeared to be expensive, time consuming and far from hazzle free.

Customs are not the people you ever want to deal with here (or anywhere else?).

Ask the Chinese seller if they can somehow get it into the country - some Chinese motorbike manufactures have distributors / resellers here. Keep us posted if you do try to get the trike because it'll be an interesting thread; good luck.

As far as I am aware trikes are illegal. I was told even the bike and sidecars you see are techncally illegal yet there are thousands of them. Nice looking trike though but I would imagine it would be very, very expensive and very hard, if possible, to get the thing registered. Good luck :)

Well, I read all kinds of threads on extensive tough emissions testing. Even the big manufacturers are quaking in their boots.

Simple answer - ride it in China, don't bother importing it.

it will be the 1st one here and that means extra hoops to jump through :)
