Songkran At Bkk: Expect The Worse ?

It will be my first Songkran after moving to LOS....in April 2003 I was at BKK too, but managed to flee to beautiful Malaysia early enuff.....what do I have to expect during that period at BKK ?

- is advisable to leave the house or better stay at home with all doors properly locked for 4 days ?

- if leaving the house, what to wear ? Izan fashion (old T-Shirt, short Pants, slippers) ?

- will there be shops or malls open at that time and if so, will it be "dry" inside the buildings ? can I reach a taxi before the wet desaster catches me ? what about CENTRAL, The MALL, Carrefour (I need my daily yummie BREAD from there !!!!), Big C, Lotus ? what about the malls at downtown BKK ?

- any Bangkokian Expat want to share what he experienced the years before ?

Thanks.......

I should let you know that I have not been in Thailand during Songkran for the past 8 years. With that out of the way,I think it all depend on where you are. If you are in Upper Medium or higger residential area, you probably be safe. If I'm not mistaken, the department store should remain dry and cool, you can shop till you drop there :D or just go to cinema and watch 3 or 4 four movies, you'll be save that way too :o

I was in BKK a few days after Songkran in 2001 (having been in Yala on the holiday), walking on the street near The Mall I think, and one lady ran up and slapped a handprint of colored talc on my shoulder and then smiled sheepishly when I jerked my head around and looked confused.

Yala was a different matter where we got soaked in a car. Of course, that was because my future sister-in-law kept rolling down the window to squirt passers-by with a big gun and I only thought it was fair to be slow about putting the window back up. Who needs water snipers. :o

wear a pair of sunglasses - saves getting water and talc in your eyes.

anything you do not wish to get wet place inside 2 plastic bags.

if you are in a taxi and passing a wetting station in a soi ( going slow ) , lock your doors.

:o
