Looking To Purchase Household Furniture - Everything!

:)G'day Everyone,

Hello, my name is Alan. I hope to be retiring in Thailand early 2010. I wish to take this opportunity to say G'day to everyone. I already have all of my own Furniture but I believe, by the time I have it freighted from Melbourne, I would be (Perhaps) better off buying what I need either prior to or just after my arrival in Thailand.

My enquiry is: Which area and Business name would be the best place to purchase "ALL" things Household Furniture? I hope somebody on the Forum could advise as to the best area - BKK/ Pattya/ Jomtien etc to shop for firstly: The essentials (Fridge/Freezer, TVs + Home Theatre, Beds + Bedding and the usual Bathroom/Toilet and Cooking utensils.

I'm unclear if there are any "One stop Shop" businesses up there however I'll leave that up to you. I don't need a lot of stuff but probably a "Good" PC would be a must. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Kind Regards,

Alan (Woof105)

Hi Alan, and welcome to Thai visa - and good luck on your relocation. You should have no problem finding what you want here in Thailand in relation to household furniture. Again of course it will depend on your tastes and budget as to where to shop. One place which does relatively decent ranges of furniture and household essential is Index. There aer a number of Index's in Bangkok, and I am pretty sure there will be one close to where you will be relocating. They also do home delivery. I have used Index on a number of occassions and have been happy with what I have purchased and with the service. :) Thye pretty much sell everything that you may need. For white goods, Power Buy normally in Centrasl are a good bet.

:D G'day mrtoad,

Thanks heaps for the info. I will get into "Internet Explorer" and have a look? I reckon they would have a website? If not I may have to get back to you to get some more detailed info.

Thanks Again,

They have a Furniture exhibition at Muang Thong Thani about every two months which is quite large. You can buy anything you require at cheaper prices then retail stores.

Alan,

Head down to any shopping mall or complex here, of which there are many. You will probably find a better selection here than in your home-town and it depends on your budget. You can find anything from the cheapest locally made rubbish, to high end imports from Europe.

No need to try looking them up on the web as most sites will be in Thai and most retail shops dont have a web presence.

Bear in mind that if you are renting here, most houses or rented apartments come furnished so best to get your feet on the ground here and then have a walk around some of the places.

Good luck

Alan,

Where are you moving to? I am doing the same as you, and also decided to not bring anything over. Just buy what I need there. One big reason is the "relative" inexpensive of some neat furniture made out of teak. We are planning a trip to Chiang Mai to buy a lot of our stuff. They will ship it to Jomtien for a reasonable fee. And the prices/selection are much better up there than in Pattaya.

I have done a fair amount of shopping (researching) in the Pattaya area. There are a few decent places for furniture. Bangkok, obviously, has a much greater selection. Especially if you want some higher end/designer stuff.

I have found out there is not a one stop shop for this. For example, with appliances, there are wide variations in price and selection depending on what store you visit. I was in some where they were offering some great bargains. Others had the same thing for 20-30% more. Same as here in the US.

I sent you a PM...check it out and I will share with you my experiences. We arrive in 3 days...and then the adventure begins! We need everything as our new house is just a shell.

I just moved here on a "retirement visa" 7 months ago. I shipped only personal belongings, no furniture. And, as a previous poster noted, the apartment/condo I am renting was "fully furnished". I added a LA-Z-BOY recliner (after all, that's what real Americans sit in :) ), mostly for my back. I also had to add a little furniture to set up a casual office nook for my computer equipment. I have had to decorate the place.

I agree that handiest are the furniture stores in the large malls. Often they congregate all on one floor. I found prices to be reasonable, depending on the quality of the furniture and whether it was imported or local (keep in mind, some international brands [like LA-Z-BOY] will carry both imported and locally made [but "official"] models. At furniture stores you almost always get a discount from the posted price.

Homepro is not for furniture, but it is a great place to buy stuff you might buy at a Home Depot sort of place -- hardware, appliances, etc., although on a much more limited scale that what we are used to in the West.

My first inclination now in buying appliances, however, is to at least look at the two main department stores -- Central and Paragon/Emporium. Increasing competition, a level of trust I don't have for mom and pop places, and free delivery that is fast (sometimes same day). When I bought a widescreen from Paragon (at a pretty decent prince), I got enough gift certificates to buy a fairly high end DVD player/recorder for free.

There are also lots of places to buy on the cheap. But, in terms of quality and service, you probably get what you pay for.

G'day Al. I'm an Alan too and from Melbourne!

I'll be doing what you're doing this time next year.

It would be nice to hear of your progress.

Good luck mate. Looks like you've got some sound advice to go on.
