December 17, 200916 yr I am having to trade in my sporty Mazda because of them dam_n kids with their bikes and the bloody dog needing to go out with us. Can anyone suggest a good vehicle for around 1 million baht? I like the Honda CRV and the Chevrolet Captiva but don't know much about any more of these types of cars. I don't want a Fortuner, pick-up or other oversized thing.
December 17, 200916 yr Forget Honda CRV, clearly overrated in my opinion, surprisingly thirstly too. Toyota Innova or maybe Wish
December 17, 200916 yr Toyota Innova, excellent car How much is an Innova? Starts at 844,000B Toyota Showroom. Here.

Kia Carnival, 1,000's on the road here, here since 2000 and 3 or 4 updates since then. Ford Everest lots about 4x4 been here since 2003 and 4 updates last in 2008 Hyundai H-1 real good looking Mini Bus, lots about been here since 2007 Then there is the brand new Honda Freed.. overpriced ? maybe to small... as said before the Toyota Innova it has been here since 2004, yet myself rarely see one
December 17, 200916 yr If you want you can try Thairung, seen a nice new car from them looked like the Nissan Teena, but they also do SUVs
December 17, 200916 yr Then there is the brand new Honda Freed.. overpriced ? maybe to small...as said before the Toyota Innova it has been here since 2004, yet myself rarely see one Innovas are pretty dated and extremely tedious machines. If that sort of car interests, you'd be better offer looking at the brand new Honda Freed, although as Ignis points out, it might be a little small.
December 17, 200916 yr If you want you can try Thairung, seen a nice new car from them looked like the Nissan Teena, but they also do SUVs They put different bodies on..... The Thai-rung Allroader is a Chevrolet Colorado Z71 underneath... The Thai-rung Adventure is a Isuzu D-Max underneath They also used to use Nissan for the Thai-rung Xciter, and for the mini bus Thai-rung Passport http://www.thairung.co.th/eng_trmodel.html

For the budget, I can suggest a Toyota Wish - an excellent car for a family; they would be far more suitable than a saloon/sedan car (ie Civic/Camry/Accord) if you need extra space. However, you mention bikes and dogs......pick-ups spring to mind first; don't overlook or disregard them because of the shape or size. If you're already considering/aware of the Chevy Captiva, but concerned about fuel or something, you might consider a four-door Chevy Colorado with NGV (natural gas, compressed in a tank) - it would be well within your budget and Chevy are offering 0% financing this month. Worth a look, I think.

Worth a look, I think. The extra investment in CNG for Chevy Colorado brakes even at 160k km, if you run CNG all the time. Most owners dont do so, cause CNG is mot leo rather often. Toyota Innova is a good and inexpensive choise. Based on Fortuner frame, it has a tax break as people carrier on frame, making it 3-400k cheaper than Toyota Wish
December 17, 200916 yr For the budget, I can suggest a Toyota Wish - an excellent car for a family; Only problem is it is on its last legs, the new 2010 model will not be made here or this was the report some months ago.. 'TMT will stop produce All new Toyota Wish in Thailand cause of non-profit campare struggle down MPV segment.Current wish still continue produce until the end of this year.'
December 17, 200916 yr I really like the look of the Hyundai H-1. It has better suspension, brakes and safety systems compared to the Toyota's on the Hilux platform. It is also significantly cheaper, even with the better interior. It gets very good reviews overall and is meant to have a great engine. Certainly worth looking at in my opinion. http://www.headlightmag.com/main/index.php...n&Itemid=92
December 18, 200916 yr Saw the new tv advert for the Honda Accord. No idea of the price, but looks like it's suited for you - hatchback, 3 rows of moveable seats, hopefully has Honda's excellent track record behind it.

Honda Accord only make the saloon here.....Wonder if you mean the Honda Freed? It is a Honda Jazz with a bigger MPV body and it cost around 1 million baht

Still, Innova has more power even in smallest engine and more solid built
December 18, 200916 yr Author Today I had a look at a Toyota Wish and a mitsubish G-wagon. I didn't like the Mitsu(too big) but the Wish was very nice - 2004 - 770,000 baht. Now do I buy this or get a newer Innova or Avanta? I wonder why the Avanza is so much cheaper than the Wish.
December 18, 200916 yr I wonder why the Avanza is so much cheaper than the Wish. Cos the Avanza is much smaller.
December 18, 200916 yr Today I had a look at a Toyota Wish and a mitsubish G-wagon. Can never work this out, these 2 are not the same type/class... Toyota Wish and the Mitsubishi Space Wagon are the same type/class.... The Mitsubishi Space Wagon is more expensive new, but for me it is a much nicer and more comfortable car/estate/MPV to drive. All Toyota's for me appear to be made for little short people with tiny feet [but then I am 1.89 tall and 130 kg with size 48 feet] Edit: Also in the same class/type is the HONDA STREAM 2.0 i-VTEC, a nice car/estate/MPV to drive, and for 770,000 baht you would be looking at a 2006 model.

They just happened to be the ones that I saw in the 'tent'. Actually one thing I didn't like was the lack of legroom - I am 6'4". I could somehow make the seat go back further surely? I'll check out the 'Stream' - thanks

For toyotas and hondas, its just not worth it to but second hand. Perhap[s a second hand mitsu spacewagon would be better value for money. For this type of vehicle I would be looking at the chevrolet captive diesel, for a good second hand buy.

I'd strongly warn against buying second-hand vehicles. I bought my first car in Thailand second-hand (a Toyota Soluna-Vios) and the cost of finance was so high I may as well have used a credit-card. This is why I suggested Chevrolet with 0% financing this month (if you put 25% down and pay 36 months). I still think a pick-up would better serve the OP's needs; bike racks can be fiddly on most cars. Obviously, the OP's perfect car would be a Mazda CX-9 but that's way over-budget.

Chevy's current promotion includes 40K off sticker price and 0% financing for 3 years. I'm tempted by the Captiva too. Yes stay clear of 2nd hand vehicles is good advice.
December 21, 200916 yr Toyota Innova is an excellent FAMILY car. It's good but not fun to drive Reading the opening post again, the Wish sounds like a better choice
December 21, 200916 yr The Avanza is a bit smaller but it still takes a lot of stuff. It is loud and not soft to drive I can tell you... It is a great family car for the price, just don't expect it to be fun

No idea about the 'new' Avanza, but the old one there just is nowhere to put your left leg/foot... under the brake pedal maybe? and hope you do not need to do an emergence stop
