I bought back my old CBR 150 from a friend. He got it modified and rode it for about 6 months then bought an NSR 150 and sold it back to me. I'm trying to get the silencer set up correctly to flow according to the mods done to it. Because he never took the time to get it right.I've taken off the aftermarket exhaust and put the stock pipe back on and gained about 15%. Then I redid the silencer and gained another 15%. The stator was loose it literally fell out when i took the case off, bolts and all. I tightened it up and gained another 10%, and driveabilty is now very responsive.

So the bike is now much faster than when he had it.

So I want to see just how much gain there is compared to a stock bike off the showroom floor unmolested by a dumb mechanic. I also want to test my silencer setup in comparison to a stock silencer by swapping it...and see if I lost or gained...and at the same time see how a stock CBR 150 performs with my silencer on it. Right now it sounds much better than a stock silencer, it sounds mean...eventhough id rather have power, i could care less what it sounds like though.

This is my 3rd trial experimenting with inner silencer pipe designs and its the strongest so far. But i cant remember how the stock one performed.

From the experiments ive been doing i have a gut feeling i'll gain bottom and midrange power with a stock silencer. Because i dont really feel that a 20cc increase warrants a bigger exhaust system, this has already been proven by my experiments, period. But matching the resonance frequency of the exhaust is more important.

Right now I got it to accelerate much faster than before with the old modified exhaust/silencer setup, which was gutted with too large of a straight through pipe installed. In other words it was flowing too freely.

Anyone out there have a new 2009-2010 model year bike that I can compare this modified one too? This bike is doing 160 kph(not GPS) speedo indicated with a 15/44 sprocket combo at about 9.5k rpm. it might possibly hit 170kph with a 15/42 setup. There's still plenty of pull left.

So if anyone wants to go for a ride maybe next weekend hit me up, i'll bring the tools.

mods done:

1. Larger piston 170 cc

2. Stage 2 cams

3. Longer stroke

4. Bored carb

5. Valve Port Job, smoothed out

6. Cylinder sleeve

7. Stiffer clutch springs

8. Plug wire

9. Needle plug

Only thing left is the racing CDI to go to 300 volts instead of the stock 200 volts and remove the cutout limiter at 11.5k rpm. As of right now it's going toe to toe with 150cc two strokes, and has been rock solid for the past 6 months.

The only thing I'm not sure about the modifications is what values they used for the valve shims. Technically I 'think' the cam lobes are the same height as stock as they should be, but the slope of the cams are just different. So the stage 2 cam should technically be able to be shimmed using the same formula as the stock cams? Thinking deeper into this, the cams would have to be the same height, or else it would slap the piston.

Feel free to input on this.

:D Hi guys, just would like to relay my experience with my CBR 150. I arrived in Chiang Mai in 2006 rented a motor bike, a JRD scooter for a month. Learned the hard way about bikes and scooters. Crashed 2 times in 1 month, now I know it was more the scooter than my stupidity :) . Found a used CBR on the internet and bought it. It had 18,500 miles on the clock. Knowing nothing about the bike except it ran good and looked nice. After another 18,000 KMs in CM, did the LOOP ( CM to Pei, MHS, Mae Sariang) twice, 2 trips to Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle. I can say that this bike is all it is ment to be. Very reliable, and a nice ride. In the 4 years I have had her, she is like a good girl friend, treat her right, change oil every 2000 KM, if she acts funny get to a shop and ask questions. No worry about language, they take it out for a ride, the only problem was my own ignorance :D . A new chain and sprockets, fixed it, 800Thai Baht. She is great on gas, Si Dang (Red) 91. Love my Repsol CBR 150, get many compliments, wash and wax it every month, looks like new. It is fun to be the first off the line at red lights and ahead of the pack, also very safer to be out in front. I know a lot of guys with big bikes 400cc + To me it is overkill. The CBR 150 can do Doi Internon without a hic-cup. The brakes are great and true. I am not a speed man so I am comfortable at 80KMPH. I did take her up to 120 a few times but got chicken at that speed, the bike was no problem only my balls, I am 67 years old :D . She is a sweet and reliable machine. Ride safe and wear a good brain bucket. Never use your middle finger to a thai :D . Happy trails mates.

I turned 67 in August. Exceed 125 kph often. Big balls...

Changed sprockets this morning to 15/42....and hit around 168kph

Bad news is the thermostat housing had a leak and the hole finally blew through...the thermostat was already taken out sometime in the past, probably would not have blown through if a working thermostat was in there.

Thermostat housing comes in 2 halves - 110 baht for both halves...i went ahead and ordered the cooling fixture on the cylinder head too - 60 baht....thermostat was 950 baht, so didn't get it.

Housing epoxied until the parts come in.

The thermostat housing is a loose piece, underneath the gas tank, with two hoses connected to it...

The part next to it is the exhaust recirculation/reburn valve.

Do i know you? Have you ridden this bike?

You're expecting us to believe that you achieved a 40% increase in torque or horsepower after these mods? I'm calling BS on this one. :) Why don't you post the Dyno runs and prove me wrong? :D

what about the longer duration cams, longer stroke, wider bore, carb ported to 30mm...?

Longer duration cams.

When the stock cbr 150 shifts from 5th to 6th, it bogs...Now there's much more torque, still enough to spare after going 15/42.

Longer duration cams.

You know how I roll

Here's a guy hitting 180kmph on his modded cbr150.

Not that I'm looking to do that. But I am looking to do some mods.

Which ones will get the most punch to baht ratio? :)

DBS Exhaust (about 4,500b)

K&N airfilter (about 3,500b)

Unrestricted CDI (don't know thb)

Kirhin PE28 Carb (awaiting price from faddybike)

I've just gotten a new chain and sprocket so not interested in changing them at the moment.

Unfortunately because of budget cuts I will have to do them one at a time. :D

Which would you experienced fellas go for?

Posted

1. DBS Exhaust ( easy mod, beware of loud sound and police )

2. K&N airfilter (easy mod )

3. Keihin PE28 Carb ( you loose the fuel economy but gain power, I noticed a big difference when i changed carb in power and thirst. Dont remember the jet sizes i used though )

The CDI is nice too, but if you aint sure how high you rev there will be a risk of blowing your piston, 13.500RPM should be ok though with the stock piston.

U probably need to turn the A/F screw some or even rejet when you are doing the mods mentioned.

/Peace

The 28 Carb was 2,900b from Faddy 3 years ago, so will be interesting to see the inflation. :)

Upon reading up, it seems best to do the breathing/pumping system. Carb and air filter, then pipe to finish it off.

Will probably do it one at a time though.

Should moving from a 26 carb to 28 carb make a bit of a difference? I have no experience in it. :D

Thanks.

Ok, dont buy it from Faddy.

You can buy a Keihin PE28mm for a NSR 150 in a honda shop or any bikeshop i guess ( beware of copies/fake

1000THB ) .. think they cost under 2.000 baht.

Pipe/Filter first, then the carb ( If you buy a new carb u need a new throttle too ).

i noticed a big difference when i changed carb.

Thanks, good info. Will have to checkout the Honda dealers for a NSR 150 carb. :)

The new throttle? Is that a major job/expense, or just getting a new cable?

Will go to a Honda dealer to try and talk about it. :D

The problem with the exhaust mod is the sound, I really don't want to be like a Thai boyracer on his rice rocket that booms past gives heart attacks to grannies. But will give it a go.

Starting at the 24 second mark, this video will show you some other alternatives for your muffler which will not cost much.

He includes information on many modifications, air filter, carb., CDI, etc.

This video is one of a set of 7 which will provide you with a lot of information on how to improve the output of your bike without getting into the motor or spending a fortune.

If you email this man and he will email you back quickly with suggestions as he did for me.

Have fun

Interesting stuff thanks.

I should have the time to go to the Honda dealer and try and source the 28 Keihin Carb for an NSR. As the NSR is out of production hopefully they can still get one in.

But will I have to get new jets? I read that the 28 carb needs a minimum size of 118 jet, and the CBR only comes with 115. I've tried finding a 120 before but couldn't find one. Will the new carb come with new jets, or is that another job, as well as the new throttle. :)

Thanks.

u can get a new throttle with a starter button and the grips for both sides for 400 baht or so. or just get the throttle from the NSR150R. most likely they will have to shorten the cable and put a new ball at the end of it, but other than that it's just putting the new throttle on the handlebar, removing the tank, part of the fairings, seat, air box, connect the cable to the carburetor, adjust the length of the cable and put it all back together.

i can get u a copy of a keihin PE28 carb for 750 baht from my local bike shop. i asked a guy on youtube who has a 28mm keihin in his bike and he uses 125/40 jets. u can get both jets from faddybikes.com or was it faddybike.com for 300 baht. faddybike is located in bkk.

The copies have slide problems after a while and the white plastic top attached to the needle doesn't allow you to set the needle height, without tearing it apart.

Former racer both bike road racing and drag racing (2 years on Honda's payroll) and cars for Dodge as I got older. Fast forward and I do more adventrue riding, less racing. But I find it funny all the mods made. Never to top quality tires for the increased speeds, shocks, or brakes. What good is speed if it doesn't handle or stop. Should be a balance. If the bike is 20% faster or more powerful, then hand in hand should be braking and handling. Rothmans racing, back in my days, or repsol now days deals with tires, handling, and breaking long before developing the motors.
