Sunday we had a trip to the mountains between Mae Suai with a friend visting his sister for Chinese New Year.

We went to a village that appeared to be ethnic Chinese about 45 minutes out of Mae Suai which included some bad road, then cut back to the town of Wa Wi. (Wa Wee?) I'm using Google Map's spelling.

This is one of the best parts of un-touristy Thailand I've seen, On the surface, more Chinese than Mae Salong with narrow walled streets and many prosperous Chinese style houses on the hillsides.

We had a great meal of steamed buns and noodle soup served by one of the prettiest girls I've seen in a while.

The route follows the Mae Suai river for a while and the scenery is spectacular, even with haze intrusion.

Definitely recommended for a day trip.

First pic is the sign at the village we went to.

Then the town of Wa Wi.

Then the restaurant.

The home made noodles... Arroy mak!

Market shot.

The servo.

On the way home. (Sorry, haven't edited these yet.)

Old Bridge.

Nearly back to the Chiang Mai Road.

Like Mae Salong, Wawi was a Koumingtang enclave. They probably grew lots of opium in this area. The Koumintang warlords taxed the opium growers and traffickers. Now that the opium is gone, they have diversified into other things like tourism and probably tangerine cultivation.
