Bars Being Demolished Between Soi 8 And Police Station

What I'm telling for years now, is that this is al part of a scheme to turn Pattaya into a family-holiday destination:

- every bar between the Beach and 2nd Road will have to move to areas between 2nd road and 3rd road

- Walking Street will become a boulevard a la Monaco, Nice, Cannes with a new Marina

- Soi Bukhaow will become the new Walking Street

- the stretch of land between the Beach and 2nd Road will be occupied by high end hotels, shopping malls, condominiums etc.

- no more (sleazy) bars in that area.

will this be before or after they fill the holes in the sidewalks?

You got that right.

The beach walkway is even more degraded ( if that were possible ) than the last time I was here.

Soi Bukhaow probably will be where all the bars move to, but it's so congested and dangerous ( traffic ) that it's going to be a real nightmare if it comes true. What moron in City Hall thought it would be OK to have a lot of bars on a 2 lane street with no pavements!

More bars been demolished on 2nd road next to Central, these bars had for sale signs on them just a few days ago, looks as if they was hoping for a last minute cash in from some unsuspecting sucker...imagine paying a years keymoney and rent upfront only to find the very next day the bar has been bulldozed...lol

I wouldn't be surprised is someone actually fell for it!

lot of new businesses who have invested mightily on the sea side.

Yes, but look at what TYPE of business.

IMO we are beginning to see a trend -- the type of business on the sea side are the ones who won't have a lot of bargaining power the next time the city tries to eliminate that side of walking street.

FYI back in 1998:

From Pattayamail issue 271

"The 101 alleged trespassers on the ocean side of the Walking Street will face a resurgence of pressure to move under the Science Ministry's orders to build a 644 million baht port project."

A PORT PROJECT???

And from 2001:

From PattayaMail issue 423

Grover Fashion was given an order to vacate for demolition.

(Grover has been selling everything he owns on Walking Street for some time now. He also owns on Beach Rd which is also for sale).

As farangpattaya said "Soi Bukhaow will become the new Walking Street"

This is an outrage, traditional bars are being replaced with a sanuk-desert of shopping malls, fish spas and Statbuckses.

Someone should contact UNESCO and submit the remaining bars for protection as World Heritage Sites.

With all the fools who believe that some bar girls love them, i'm sure some idiot fell for it. LOL

Looks like they need something to attract more dumb tourists who are loose with their wallets who were sold a scam of a vacation :) .

Anyone who claims this is a long-term citywide strategy has failed to grasp how Thailand works. At most, there are clever businessmen who can currently predict trends particularly in terms of land valuation and who have the capital to invest now to make money in a few years' time when their prediction comes true.

Pattaya will be a chaotic mish-mash of sleazy run-down bars, messed up pavements and top-end hotels fighting for space all topped off with the Thai special sauce of mad, mad, horribly congested roads totally messed up by the local taxis, motorbike taxis, baht buses blocking it all up and driving like a cross between gangsters and lunatics. This will be the prevailing situation for at least the next 30 years.

I heard that it was going to be ,internet cafes, beauty parlours and some coffee shops as there just arnt that many in Pattaya, oh yes and they are all going to be open air so you dont get all that nasty air con while getting your hair cut.

Just as long as it keeps the families away!

Long may Pattaya continue as it is.

Just wait until they legalize gambling, then you will see what Pattaya is aiming for.

Slightly altered sketch from OFAH.

Rodney: Me and Mickey Pearce are going to buy a bar in Pattaya...

Del: Ive got to hand it to ya Rodney you've only been in the business five minutes and already your going international...

Rodney: Yeah we sold those lawn mower engines last week so were gonna invest...

Grandad: Whatcha gonna invest in Rodney a Wendy House?

Del and Grandad laugh.

Next scene Rodney looks down in the dumps in Pattaya standing where his bar was going to be...

Del...Well Rodders I've flown half way round the world and I can tell you this ain't no ordinary Beer Bar I must say...

Rodney and Mickey Pearce look optimistic...No???

Del: No, It's not.... It's a "bulldozed Beer Bar"

Del stands there in fits of laughter, Rodney and Mickey look sick as pigs. :)

Just wait until they legalize gambling, then you will see what Pattaya is aiming for.

Is this in the works?

Could they be making a Zimmer frame park for all the Ex pats. Just joking. :)

Yes, but look at what TYPE of business.

Somebody better check with the Russians first, I don't think they got the memo.

:)

Is this in the works?

Not really, due to legal constraints. Gambling is illegal in Thailand, and it's also very much against Bhuddhist doctrine. On the other hand, it's also VERY popular. :D Past governments have expressed the intention to allow regulated casinos in some places to prevent money leaking to casinos elsewhere in the region, sometimes JUST over the border from Thailand.

Now, the guys in that past government seem a considerable way from getting back into power, so I wouldn't hold my breath. It'll be a fairly big struggle to get a casino to open, but IF it can be done then Pattaya is a very likely candidate. Possibly Chiang Mai as well; basically anywhere where tourism needs a boost.

A reason for picking Pattaya first could be that it's impossible to fuc_k it up any further no matter what. :) It may however significantly affect the demographic of tourists in Pattaya; think LOADS more visitors from Bangkok, China, etc.

Beer bars out. Fish spas in. And so it goes ...

:):D :D

Well done.

Back to the topic, what will happen with those empty spaces?

Back to the topic, what will happen with those empty spaces?

I'm sure we'll find out in a week or two...so just stay tuned.

Appears that "new" bars will replace the old.

I heard this also - from the guy who rents motorcy's at the front (Mr Num, I think)

Very Good!

Did you ever try to walk on Walking Street in the old days before it was closed to traffic?

Same moron.

true and thumbs up for this!!!

:)

An ex Pat Pattaya resident has just told me that the Pattaya City Council are going to authorise the building of a complex like the EROS Centre in Hamburg it will help tourist and ensure that they dont have to pay bar fines etc
