Do you think that Obama will declare war on England over the BP scandal? He has apologized to all the enemies of the US and spares no scorn for its for its closest allies. Do you think he  will join forces with Argentina over the Falklands next?  :)

Not only the "lefties" in apology mode, do I not see the new Pommy PM apologising to the IRA in the news this morning?

Nice to see the right showing their sensitive and caring side here.

I wonder if he will apologize to the US people for supporting the swell guys in the IRA with funds when they were planting bombs in London? For some reason, the Brits have always been a little touchy about that.

Maybe Obama can help drive the Protestant "aggressors" out of Belfast and Northern Ireland next?

With friends like BO who needs enemies?

All of his posturing is merely to take peoples focus off his abject failings. He wanted a whipping boy, Iran doesn't give a <deleted> and neither does North Korea, and he's found one. Even better than that it's one of those multi national corporations. Better than that it's a foriegn company (around 39% American and only 40% British owned but it's called BRITISH Petroleum) so he can assuage his leftie colleagues by not haranging their buddies.

I see he's even tried to elevate it into another 9/11.

I was trying to think about something nice about this phony president BO, but there isnt anything. Poor old states has gone from tool to fool, I wonder whats next. When will the USA finally put someone back into power, someone with a bit of substance, some balls, for example someone like Margaret Thatcher.:D

Anyway, back to BO, is it the case that he is constantly being misinformed or are they smoking some new brew at the whitehouse.

ps: for those of you who have trouble understanding me, I am aware that Margaret Thatcher was never president of the USA :)

Sorry mate wrong here. Max ( as he was known as a kid ) Reagan, had really died some years before he was elected and was in reality a cardboard cut pulled along on casters. Maggie was in charge of both countries.

They'll have a new president soon, just as soon as Wen Jiabao reminds that upstart socialist wannabee just who owns the USA.

Borat (sic) is not quite yet as amusing as dubbya (yet), and also not quite as scary (yet).

US elections/politics "The greatest show on Earth"..... It never stops really does it?

Not only the "lefties" in apology mode, do I not see the new Pommy PM apologising to the IRA in the news this morning?

When did he do that then?

I read it as apologising for the innocent civil rights marchers that were shot by Paratroopers.

But perhaps you could show me where I read it wrong and you got it right?

I decided against replying to that myself Moss because I thought that perhaps it was some tongue in cheek remark that I didn't quite understand the meaning of.

UG said something a bit odd as well, but then I just put that down to UG.

Hey Ho

UG said something a bit odd as well, but then I just put that down to UG.

:) Now listen here rakers, you leave old UG alone, in his day, before the invention of the internet, electricity and the wheel, he was a formidable force in society. We are now fortunate enough to share UG's last moments with him on the thread between the times when he is being taken to the potty, bathed and fed. Please note I made no mention of his shock treatment times. :D

No doubt the IRA, and any other terrorist group/freedom fighters, would have considered civil rights marchers to be soldiers in their cause.

They would certainly have claimed the massacre as a propaganda victory.

I see that the inquiry didn't consider Martin McGuinness running around with his tommy gun that day to have instigated anything, but I suspect that would have been lack of opportunity.

No doubt the soldiers responsible will be brought to justice, it seems to be heading that way. I doubt the Irish will consider that the amnesty applies to THEM.

Good on you ND, going in to bat for our senior citizens......but there's a much more "senior" (and senile) citizen here that may require your championing.

The Internet & wikipedia are amazing. For the first time in history, adult males still living in their mother's basement are allowed to join together and go after their well-travelled elders who have been around the world and collected decades of experience and knowledge.

I used to think we were always having a left versus right debate. But upon closer inspection there is another factor. On one side you have the older ones living abroad, and on the other side you have the younger ones posting from their comfort of their home country. The former experiences life, the later googles it.

I don't like the way our US gov't is dissing the Brits. It's OK for us "small people" to take the piss out of each other but in the end the USA & UK have been as close as two countries can get for a long time now. Who moves into that BFF spot after we chase the UK away? They'll probably take the rest of the Commonwealth with them leaving us with...?

^None of these friendships are genuine. Everyone is in it for something for themselves. Make no mistake about that. I think humans, as individuals can make genuine friends, but countries making friends with other countries, nah, I dont buy it.

If this whole entity of human evolution was an experiment, IMHO it has failed dismally. Humans as a collective whole have managed to all but destroy the planet & create all sorts of physical and emotional disharmony. How could such a cleverly designed being turn out to be such a stupid and destructive creature is unexplainable. I feel the only hope left for the planet to recover would be a massive plauge that killed off 95% of human existance, goodness knows if things continue the way there are, earth is doomed anywayz.

What about the well travelled elders who've retired to remote Thai villages and rely on Wiki and the 'net to keep in touch? :)

Anyone worked out how to quote a post without your message running into it?

I have heard some of those retirees even sit around, breathlessly hoping you will post something of substance so they can learn even more. :)

Alas, their wishes are seldom granted.

Yep.

First click quote and then (quickly) multiquote and post after the last {/quote} code. That should work.

I occasionally share a nugget of local knowledge in the Chiang Rai forum that's appreciated.

I'll admit it's hard work here though.

All I do is hit the "Reply" button and the screen then comes up with all the quotes shown. If there are too many, it will tell you when you preview your post. You then have to remove at least one to continue. You do preview your posts don't you?

Countries are made up of people and people tend to gravitate towards the familiar or someone you have something in common with. There is a genuine friendship there but there is always an underlying self-interest factor. Just as in a lot of personal relationships.

Historically, the US and UK have been majoirty white, Christian, English speaking countries that share a lot of common history. That is changing. Obama is our first president that doesn't relate to the old, white Anglo-American history. So naturally he personally doesn't see the UK as anthing special. That's too bad because depiste not being all that good at association football anymore, the English and other Brits are good people. Maybe our next president will try to get the relationship back on track.

Except for what is going on down at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico I haven't really followed this disaster much and haven't heard any of the jawboning associated with it. I can't see any reason why the USA and Britain should be at odds over it. The adversaries are and should be the US and local governments and BP and soon it will be the world against BP. It's toast. The sooner evryone accepts that fact the better, so they can do whatever it is necessary to do with no ulterior motives.

So you did not see an apology to the IRA then?

The Civil Rights Marchers had nothing to do with the IRA, NICRA were marching for fair housing, jobs and equality and the various factions of the IRA were fighting for a United Ireland essentially, so they were not soldiers in the IRA cause and it was not a joint venture.

Whether Bloody Sunday created the former into the latter is almost unquestioned.

The enquiry stated that although MM was 'almost certainly' in the area and carrying a Tommy Gun, he was neither the cause nor instigation of the firing.

As for justice and should the soldiers responsible be brought to book, I hope not, it is not the same place as it was 38 years ago and now there has been an enquiry that can be believed in, it should be left there.

But remember, the reason why terrorism is so demonised is because it is often an attack on non-combatants, and soldiers are trained and have the moral high ground, they are not supposed to act this way, terrorists do.

But I don't believe they are entirely at fault for their actions, they are highly trained shock troops doing a trained policemans job, mostly young and inexperienced at that type of game, they were also known for their violence and aggression an attribute suitable in other areas.

Their commanding officer went against orders, they were not supposed to enter the Bogside, and in doing so triggered the tragic events.

No, I rarely preview my posts which is the reason most of them have a "This post has been edited etc" attachment. :D

If I'm going to write more than a few lines I'll do it on Word first and copy and paste.

I'll confess I like to get things written out properly as I never had a lot of formal education in that field and don't like to advertise the fact.

You may be a older than this dog, but I doubt it's by much. :D
