Skype And Win 7

Featured Replies

Friend has win 7 and tried to install latest Skype. He received a win 32 error. After a quick google i noticed that seems others have had some conflicts installing Skype. But..lots of conflicting advice on fixes.

As he is in another part of the country, i cannot physically help. He is also not so IT savvy, so trying to find him some simple advice (or better yet a skype download others have found that has worked).

Any thoughts / advice?

Cheers.

Never had an issue with Skype on Windows 7. Is it possible he tried to install the wrong version? Was the error during install, or after?

Some tips online were:

Have a simple way to use Skype and Windows 7 x64 (or x86) - just install Skype 3.6. I do this and now I have fine working Skype (audio, video and ets.)

For all of you that have problem with skype minimization in tray on windows 7, here simple steps what to do:

1. Exit or quit from Skype program.

2. Right click on Skype icon on Desktop or Skype shortcut in Start Menu, and select Properties.

3. Go to Compatibility tab.

4. Under “Compatibility Mode’ section, check and tick the checkbox for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

5. In the below drop-down box, select Windows Vista (Service Pack 2).

6. Click OK.

7. Start the Skype program, and now it should minimize to system tray.

Cheers!

I have been using skype ever since i bought win 7 64 bit version. I never had any problems with it so i think your friend has an other problem. I also dont know if there is a different skype for the 64 bit and the 32 bit version.

Thanks guys. Ill get him to redownload and check again. Just i read others were having conflicts so figured it must be a known error. Hopefully something just went wrong with his download initially.

Could it be he needs to 'run as administrator' to install?

I just installed Skype on Win7-32 a few weeks ago. It works for making calls, but I can't enter digits to interact with the call (eg, 'press 1 for English'), but I think that doesn't work for anybody.

In general for Windows apps uninstall, then reboot, then re-install. This may not always be necessary, but it beats spending hours second-guessing.

I have replaced my 4.1.0.179 with the current 4.2.0.169 with no installation issues. Have tested and works. Normal window keyboard that appears when you call programmed number also sends number tones correctly. Using Windows 7.

Related or not Google Chrome did a death spiral (no pages responding any tabs) when I tried to access Skype help but after many restarts seems to have repaired itself.
