Today we rose early with the sunrise and headed out Old Chiang Mai rd. South to Khun Korn Waterfall. This is a wonderful half day adventure that takes fitness but no special equipment. The 70 meter high falls is very spectacular this time of year. We were back in Chiang Rai town for lunch.

About 20km south of Chiang Rai on the Old Chiang Mai Rd you will find the clearly marked “Holy Water” turnoff where you make a right turn (west ). From here it is 12km to the end of the road and the parking area for your 1.4 kilometer hike to the base of the falls. Fitness is required but you will find ample places to rest and catch your breath if you fall a bit short in this area.

There is a public toilet at the trailhead that will be your last chance in comfort so be advised. We drank a whole 1.5 liter bottle of water during our trek but then again I’m a big guy.

You will walk on a clearly marked trail crossing a few low bamboo bridges (no worries they are at grade level and not intimidating) Bamboo and Tropical forest surround your senses which are full of birdsong and butterflies that is both beautiful and cheerful to the ears. The babbling bolder strewn waterway fills the air with its sounds and is visible just south of the trail.

The grade is at a few points steep but nothing more than hiking boots or in our case tennis shoes and a bottle of water will be required. Remember pack it in pack it out! That said the trail was I’m happy to say clear of the usual trash we see all over Thailand. We saw nothing more than a discarded broken sandal that was clearly a poor choice for this rocky and at times a 40% grade trail.

For those inquisitive minds the trail is marked at every 200 meter levels so that inevitable “how much further” query can be easily answered.

Khun Korn waterfall is the highest in Chiang Rai at 70 meters height. When you see it from a hundred meters away it's quite impressive but when you stand under it the real sense of spectacular hits you.

Bathing it was observed is allowed.

You should expect to get wet, as there is quite a bit of spray from this truly magnificent falls.

On a Tuesday we found only a few people on the trail both coming and going so that would suggest that weekdays are best for the 2 hour round trip (from the parking lot.) This leaves 30 minutes at the falls for pictures and a nature’s way cooling experience (cool misty spray). Enjoy!

A good reporton about one of the best spots around Chiang Rai.

I've been many times and climbed to the falls twice. Most times I just wander around while the dog has a splash in the river.

But I've obviously still not got it right.

The trick Scea, is to place the cursor at the spot you want the picture to go. Then you click the add picture button and it will insert there, hopefully. Click your return key and you can drop down a line to add text, I believe. ;)
