Archaeologists working at the World Trade Centre site in New York have found the remains of a wooden ship apparently buried there more than 200 years ago.

"They were so perfectly contoured that they were clearly part of a ship," said archaeologist A. Michael Pappalardo.

The archaeologists have been working on the site - scene of the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001 - to document historical material uncovered during construction.

They estimated that the vessel could date from the mid to late 1700s.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries wooden cribbing was used to extend lower Manhattan further into the Hudson River.

The vessel was discovered about 20 to 30 feet below street level on the World Trade Centre site.

The area under excavation had not been dug out when the original Twin Towers were built in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr Pappalardo said the whole vessel may have been two or three times longer than the portion found.

He and his team believe the the hull had been deliberately truncated and had probably been used as landfill material.

Workers also found a 100lb anchor in the same area on Wednesday, but they are not sure if it belongs to the ship.

interesting...but did this boat go to Thailand?

interesting...but did this boat go to Thailand?

What has that got to do with anything? This is OTB, topics don't have to be Thai-related.

There is so much cool stuff buried beneath the surface - especially in Europe. Where I lived, it seemed every time they built a new road or building they discovered some medieval wall, foundation or cemetery.

History Channel had a great series, "Cities of the Underground" I think it was called. It's amazing what lies beneath the streets and squares of some cities - which you can actually walk through with the right connections.

there is a city hidden under Endinburgh if memory serves me correct....

mexico is like that, they often uncover or rediscover old myan, inkan, or aztek stone works and that is some old stuff thousands of yrs before the ming dynasty.

Correct, full of scotspersons refusing to pay 10p to come out.

True & makes you wonder......How many times has a great civilization been removed by what ever world changing event.

I remember when they first found that the sphinx was actually quite a bit older than the pyramids. Also most these things discovered are just above ground or below the surface found while excavating. I imagine on a planet 70% covered by ocean there is possibly much history hidden below the ocean surface too

When it comes time for our civilization to be "removed", there won't be much around to show for it. Nothing is built to last like the pyramids. Buildings are built then demolished within one lifetime. All of our knowledge is slowly becoming all electronic so nothing will last as long as cave drawings or even the Gutenberg Bible. Even the junk in space will slowly lose orbit and come crashing down sooner or later.

All true & this last bit you mentioned is an interesting topic in itself.

I have been to some high points in the world high enough that just after sunset you can actually see satellites going past in the sky. They appear as lights due to the angle of the just set sun glistening off them. Kind of like UFO's There are the solid lite ones & the flashing of the tumbling types.

But it does make you realize how crowded it is up there. And as you say all things eventually lose orbit & hopefully burn up completely in re-entry. Then also the Russians use to destroy some things in space causing lots of small debris.

Perhaps you remember one shuttle mission where the windshield was smashed inwards ( not completely but visibly )....They said it was due to a fleck of paint the size of a postage stamp loose in space. But that postage stamp sized fleck of paint was like a bowling ball traveling at I forget what speed hitting the windshield.

Makes that whole process of waiting for a launch window more understandable from various angles.

edit: I was curious as it is an old story so looked it up.. here is the picture...This 4-mm-diameter crater on the windshield of the space shuttle orbiter (see image above) was made by a small bit of space debris determined to be a fleck of white paint approximately 0.2 mm in diameter. It was traveling at a relative velocity of 3-6 km/sec when it impacted.

The following graphics are computer generated images of objects in Earth orbit that are currently being tracked. Approximately 95% of the objects in this illustration are orbital debris, i.e., not functional satellites. The dots represent the current location of each item. The orbital debris dots are scaled according to the image size of the graphic to optimize their visibility and are not scaled to Earth. These images provide a good visualization of where the greatest orbital debris populations exist. Below are the graphics generated from different observation points.

:D Pretty Amazing

Whoever invents the first orbital vacuum cleaner is going to make a motza. :)

Woteva a motza is?

It will be the Japs.......:jap: ......and they will make a MAZDA.........

:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

(I know the town called Motza.)

I thought he was talking about cheese.

Me too. I just had a Motza burger tonight.

They must be talking about one of my old boats. I've been building them for centuries. The wooden ones never seem to last.
