Oh No You Don'T! Pc Officials Order Punch To Calm Down And Swap His Whacking Stick For A Fluffy Mop

Featured Replies

For generations he has been a raucous presence at the British seaside.

But in our more sensitive and politically-correct times Mr Punch has sometimes found that his no-holds-barred performance is not to everyone's taste.

Now officials at a coastal resort have deemed a traditional Punch and Judy show too shocking for modern tastes, and ordered any violence to be removed from the script.

In my version of Punch and Judy there's an extra bit at the end where Punch and Judy are sitting outside the pub the next day both sporting black eyes as the copper walks past they shout foul obscenities towards him .....keep it real for the kids......

I'm amazed it's lasted this long.

I notice Andy Capp hasn't given Flo a good biffing for quite a while as well.

PC aside, do we really want domestic violence as part of children's entertainment? A lot get enough in real life.

True.

I also think that in "the good old days of our youth" it was not fully appreciated how much this kind of entertainment deeply influenced young children's behaviour in later years. We know better now.

The same censorship goes on for violent video games and TV programs for this very reason.

Not in Thailand!

I don't reckon the odd P&J show on holiday, or at a school party, will turn kids violent, but the constant showing of well-dressed guys with Beemers and Mercs shooting each other in Bangkok's better areas / yobs pushing drugs knifing each other in bars / fairy tales about witches and goblins turning people to animals and all the other tripe that is on most Thai channels night after night will turn any kid into a homicidal maniac.

I was brought up to believe that force was used on the rugby field. Off the pitch one is courteous and helpful. But as I was seven or eight when WWII ended, I also saw a lot of actual violence. Especially as I was bombed out in 1941. A bit traumatic that.

To me, there is no excuse for violence, nor for not controlling one's temper. But I've lost my rag more than once. Regretted it later, but it was very satisfying at the time.

Funny thing anger, I was diagnosed with "Anger Management" problem and when I denied it the psychologist said that mine came in the form where the anger was unnaturally suppressed.

She insisted that this was as bad as going around beating people up all the time.

I would have jumped up, smacked her in the eye, shouted " cured !! " and walked out without paying................

Ah.... I needed a good report at the time and she wrote exactly what I wanted. :)

Must have been the smack in the eye.............Centralised her thinking and made her putty in your hands. Poor girl would have written anything.

Is "Bringing Up Father" still being drawn and published?

Poor old Jiggs, an immigrant Irishman, Maggie bashing him in most strip episodes.

Loved it, my wives have never dun that to me........LOL

Violence, racism, crime, you name it.

I have to be honest, as a child I found Punch and Judy deeply disturbing and Punch scared the heck out of me.
