From the Thai point of view it's เชียงราย

According to the Royal Thai Institute, the official Roman transcription is Chiang Rai. See:

I looked through my business-cards book of the local higher echelon and a little bit more than halve of its holders chose for Chiang Rai.

If you type in Chiangrai on Google you get 107,000 hits.

If you type in Chiang Rai on Google you get 723,000 hits.

I have always used Chiangrai, also to accentuate the difference with Chiang Mai.

Mr. Thetyim and I are probably not the only ones who have to start using

Chiang Rai. I really will try to do it from now on.
