genetics. No other answer.

I suspect that some overweight people might resent your "let himself" comment.

In a way they are responsible themselves, you don't get fat if you don't eat too much. I could get fat easy but i don't let it happen by making sure i get the right food and enough exercise. Else i would get fat easy. Some ppl don't get fat others do but its not an excuse you can still combat it.

Of to my own lil gym to do some bench presses 36 yo but still pressing around 260lbs 4 sets of 8. It all depends on what you think is more important. That nice cheeseburger.. or your body.. that great beer.. or that glass of water.

Watching tv all night or going out to a gym or doing some other sports. There is a lot you can do... but you can't stop aging.. you can just slow it down and keep in shape. Its better for your health too.

Come back and talk on the same subject when you're 60, Rob. :D

Sure i dont think i can keep up forever, but if i look at my dad who is 63 and he rides his bike a couple of 100 kilometers each week (weather permitting). I think i will try to keep active. I will never be able to keep it as it is now but i can look a lot better and be healthier then others in my age class.

You cant stop aging and you cant stop your body getting weaker but you can slow it down a lot.

Why not keep healthy and in shape ? And i dont mean like a top athlete but keep the fat away and the heart pumping.

If i look at my mom who is also 63 and she doesnt do any sports.. there is a big difference between the two. Dad is full of life and active while mom is always complaining about her body and pains.

Injury and illness always play a part. You can't paint all with the same brush.

Injury and illness DOES have an effect on all of us; so does choice of profession. If you are working all day in a tiring but sedentary job, it's only natural that the person might eat too much and exercise too little. But, that doesn't mean you can't do SOMETHING to improve the situation. And yes, it is easy for the young to have life all figured out. Life hasn't thrown them any curve balls yet.

One of my lasting shameful secrets is thoroughly enjoying a Steven Segal beat 'em up.

That is the whole thing by doing something.. you improve on your health. I am not stating people have to turn into fitness fanatics.. but just doing something and controlling your food intake or what you take (yes its great to guzzle down beer but also bad for the body). No pain .. no gain... i mean nothing comes free or easy you need to make choices.

:offtopic2:

Pffft....Beer's bad for you? Right.....I'll tell George..err Stephen right away.

that great beer.. or that glass of water.

Mmmmm........wait a minute......decisions decisions.......erm....... Yep, when they start making water taste like beer, I'm right with you :D

:D Im not preaching, just saying that you can change your body only you have to give up things for it. I dont care either way but to say its impossible and so on is just an excuse.

I disagree with the comment (by HB) about Arnold Schwarzenegger, though. Arnold is a very smart man, and knew just how to market himself. Although Arnold no longer looks buff like he did in his muscle pumping days, he hasn't let himself go to fat, either.

ummmm

anybody who trained his muscles for years or worked hard physically and then reduces physical exercise will have a weight problem for the rest of his life.

Often i think your a smart guy.. but this time i have to disagree. There will only be a problem if the person does not reduce his food intake. If he keeps on eating as much as he or she did during those days then there will be a problem. But it is not impossible to change your food intake.

Sly is on massive doses of steroids. That's how he maintains his muscles. He was caught a couple of years back in Australia with a suitcase full of steroids, but magically all charges were dropped. :whistling:

But, just taking steroids DOES NOT INCREASE MUSCLES! All steroids do is allow the muscles to grow more rapidly when a serious regime of workouts is maintained. Maintaining a proper diet along with serious training is what keeps a body fit. Robblok knows what he is talking about.

You are right..if you just take steriods.. you wont get big muscles you need to work out too.. and keep working out. Also you need a good diet. Its no magic drug that turns fat into muscle. Many people like to believe that this way they can discredit the people with muscles... like he too steriods and then its easy. Not true.. its easier but still they need to do a lot to keep them.

Also people like Sly and Arnold are not like the average person they have the right genetics.

I'm glad to see you've got your excuse worked out. :)

'Of course, nothing to do with the freshly made saurkraut and blutwurst starter, followed by the filet Wellington, with apfel strudel mit citrone und sahne to finish. All washed down with copious draughts of Gosser bier, at the Wiessenbacher in Fronleiten, Styria, in superb company. A pound anyone would be glad to put on again, and again.

YUCK! :bah:

In a way they are responsible themselves, you don't get fat if you don't eat too much.
I don't know what the story is with Seagal, you may well be right in his case - but I do know that there are genetic disorders where your eating habits actually do matter very little. I personally know people who have even gained weight while being on a strict diet - eating only half of what I do, and exercising more. Not everyone is made the same.

YUCK! :bah:

S(ch)nob. :)

Even better with the oompahh band bashing away outside. :D

I read somewhere that Mr Seagull is a member on here. Wonder what his nik and photo are?

What's Jonathan Livingston got to do with the subject at hand?

One of the most wonderful books i have ever read.

I am one of those people i need a strict diet and lots of exercise a lot more then a normal person (still not as bad as others but someone with my build and activity level should eat about 1,5 to 2 times what i eat) . Still i do it and i keep in good shape. Its often used as an excuse and there are not many of those people around. Far more people can do something about it but just wont because they are lazy.

But you are right its easy for some and hard for others. That is no excuse not to do anything about it.

As I suggested, it's genetics.

I eat and eat and eat and love eating good fatty foods.

And I still only weigh 50 kilos. I have been looking for a diet to PUT ON weight to no avail.

My friends call me the Scarecrow.

You probably have the metabolism of a humming bird. Enjoy ;)

Sure but that does not mean you cant do anything about it. Its a nice excuse is it not ? I got my genes against me but im still in shape but it does take an effort.

I take your point, and you are quite right, of course.

You do seem to have a view that "being in shape" is all important, though.

I am sure that some overweight people are quite happy to be the way they are, accepting of their genes, and happier eating than excersising.

As long as my tax dollars don't get spent on their tripple bypasses and stomach staplings, I say let them eat, drink and be merry.

I agree with you 100%, its up to them. The only thing i was fighting against was the image nothing can be done and it is just genetics. I really don't care if someone is in shape or not as long as they just don't say I can't. I think most people can but just don't want too. That is up to them, but just don't use genetics as an excuse.

Also as long as they pay for their lifestyle and not a tax payer.. up to them. Who am i to judge. I might have given the wrong impression. Must be my avatar :D

For me its important to stay in shape but i slack off too at times. That is only human.

Ummmm,

Have you looked at your wardrobe lately?

OK, I apologise :sorry:

Humphrey! Are you suggesting our Patsy gets her clothes from the Worzel Gummidge Collection?

Mind you, I CAN imagine our Patsy in a straw hat and an oversize check shirt....but only on a summer's day on a picnic beside a river.
