We managed to drive up from Songkla to NST without any problems and the weather was quite nice. Coming up to NST things changed decidedly. Lots of heavy rain and flooding everywhere. Arrived at Donsak un harmed and in good spirits and looking forward to getting back home. My friend goes to get a ticket for himself as I got a return for me and the car. Drives to the check in only to be told there are no ferries running for the rest of the day. <deleted>!!! How can they sell my friend a ticket for a ferry that isn't running ? The guy at the check in booth said they would refund his ticket which they did.

Tried Seatran but they were not running either so ended up in Khanom for the night.

As of right no looking out of the hotel window which is right on the beach it is still blowing a hooly and not looking good for the boats running today either.

Wind Guru doesn't look good and the other forecast sites are the same. Looks like another day in Khanom. A one horse town where even the horse upped and left :D

OOPPs Somebody isn't going to be a happy chappy as there is now a longtail boat getting smashed to pieces on the beach outside the hotel :o

7:30am in Baan Taling Ngam. We essentially are on an island between the ocean and the vastly overflowed pond behind us. Amazingly, still have power, water (in the pipes), and internet! Landlord said that while I might be able to get my high clearance 4W drive truck through the water to get to work I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SEE IF THE ROAD WAS STILL THERE UNDER ME. Very good advice, I expect there are multiple areas with collapsed sections of roads from the force of the water and poorly constructed drainage. And remember that moving water can easily push a car or truck that has been lifted up (floating) off of the road into dangerous situations. This is one of the most common causes of fatalities during floods. Also just heard of a tree down across the road in my neighborhood.

Here is a list of places to be wary of that I saw on my drive yesterday.

Saket to Baan Thale: going up big hill where they have cut away the hillside for fill dirt the road is filled with rocks and road wearing away at side

Entering Lamai from Hua Thanon side same big pond at curve of road where turn off to Grandfather Rock is...Row of shop houses behind (uphill) that curve are all flooded from water down the hill

Back road to Lipa Noi from Taling Ngam before the Raja ferry the windy section has strong water flowing over the road, can't see road. Very dangerous place, stay away.

How was the party at the Barracuda Bar? And where exactly is it?

Good luck all......

Hope everybody on Samui is fine and the unavoidable damage will be within reason. Be careful out there,

Am surprised you were actually able to make it to Donsak, Dunc! Which road did you come inf rom? Over Khanom?

We came up the coast road all the way. Great till we got near Nakon Si and then there was water everywhere. The road from the Khanom turn off to the ferry was bad in places but passable in a 4 X 4. Just trying to find out if we are going to get back today but looking out the hotel window it isn't looking very likely :(

That is one nasty looking sea :o

Bangrak Update:

- The city main road passable but we dont have electricity, internet and phone services as well... The whole city is like a ghosttown..

- There is new lakes around the airport and they "heavily" trying to clean the runway, hopefully the flights will be back on soon as i see many stranded travellers in the lounge area, the arrivals gate is closed entirely because the entry flooded and they block the entry with sandbags...

- The ghost road still passable however on some points flooded already

I know its rare to have weather like this, and understand we dont have electricity for a while, but right now we having 15 hours without electric which means they not even try to fix it... between chaweng and bangrak they have electric already, its just so crazy how they can left a whole city without electric for nearly a day now....

Also i saw some cars struck down near the road, even a caterpillar and there was a lomprayah kind bigger bus also in the new river near 99 karaoke junction...

Anyone have a generator for rent now should be able to make a good business...

Electric and internet still on at maenam beachfront...sea looks mighty close though....

Update on Chaweng area:

Absolute disaster area. I live behind Laem Din pretty close to one end of the lake. House is on an incline and as of 3am this morning the water entered through the gate and quickly came into the compound. It rose around 40 cm in less than an hour. This is the first time in 10 years that we managed to have water in the compound and now there is still around 30 cm under the house (on stilts by the way) and around 1 meter in the street. I don't want to imagine what is going on on the Beach Road between Monkey Bay and First Bungalow. I heard one story that the water was over 3 meters high in certain areas close to Centara. Jetskis are racing over the lake and past our house on the flooded street, evacuating people from Chaweng.

Crusty, you are in that area, any updates??

Hope everyone managed to get to higher ground and is safe before the flashflood hit last night, but I fear the worst...

I spoke to crusty this morning. He is struck over this side as well with the kids from the sailing club. they were returning from racing in Krabi yesterday. His wife told him the water is up to the top step of the steps that go to his reception. It is the first time it has ever been this deep according to him. My missus is stuck in Chawang and the water is 3 metres in places and getting worse.

I think being stuck here isn't so bad after all as the electric and internet are still fine in the hotel. :D

I have a car sitting in the Departure car park at the airport anyone any idea if it's flooded I can't get back. I'm assuming it's ok as a lot higher than runway.

Just got word that the road in Baan Taling Ngam that goes up the little hill next to the Baan Taling Ngam Resort (future Intercontinental, past Meridien) has been closed by a landslide.

Just the occasion to lock yourself in and write a few more stories!

;)

Good idea Rob. But sadly I'll be doing that at someone elses house instead of mine! Water came surging into my house about 4pm yesterday and I had to get out. Had to wade above waist deep for 1/2km, carrying a few belongings in a plastic box, perched a-top a yellow lilo! Extremely stylish and very effective.

So now I am a flood refugee camping out with friends. Just sitting it out and hoping for the best!!!!!

Apparently the big rock hanging over the road between Chaweng and Lamai has fallen down on the road, anybody with pictures of this?

Posted

If true this is huge news. Would love to have confirmation so as to tell a friend who might try to battle through Lamai to get home to his family in Chaweng Noi.
