PHUKET: Beginning next month, selected art galleries in Phuket will stage a series of “marine debris” exhibitions comprising artwork made from trash collected during beach clean-ups.

The grand opening will be at the Nakhonnai Museum, opposite the Golden Tulip Mangosteen Resort & Spa on Saiyuan Road Soi 2 in Rawai. Doors will open at 6pm on December 1.

Subsequent showing will take place as follows:

January: Rawai Art Village, Wiset Road, Rawai

February: Wua Gallery, Phang Nga Road, Phuket Town

March: Room 2521 Gallery, Thalang Road, Phuket Town

The project will involve local 25 artists.

“About 30 works from about seven artists will be displayed at each venue,” said project coordinator Thongthai Srigaroon.

“All the works will be for sale, with part of the proceeds going to the Koh Yao Community Hospital project,” he added.

The project has drawn active involvement from resort staff, students and residents conducting beach clean-ups in different areas including Rawai, Nai Harn and Karon.

The artists will use the trash collected to create the art pieces for the exhibition.

“In the future, we will probably work with foreign artists as well,” said Mr Thongthai.
