What'S Up With All The Africans Around Lower Sukhumvit Area

Featured Replies

Last night i went out to dinner with a few friends. We ate frequently a few years ago with Gullivers on Soi 5.

This time however it was a little uncomfortable.

Nothing bad happened, but the atmosphere was tense.

Are the Africans planning a takeover like what happened in Japan a few years ago?

How can they stay here, i have the feeling 99% does not have a valid visa.

It is not that something violent is happening, but it feels like a ghetto.

Do bar and restaurant owners not worry about this?

Could you embed a video for us?

No.

But you can see it live on location.

I agree with 'rakers.

This questionable thread wouldn't have lasted in General... but why post it here? No matter how you try to justify it, it is objectionable in the extreme (not even worthy of the sandbox.)

When I stay (reluctantly) in Bangkok, I usually use the Amari Boulevard - next door to Gullivers.

I have not noticed anything unusual in the area recently.

What is your problem? What time of the day (or night) are you there?

If there were people coming in to the area bringing down the character (??!!!!) of the area, I am sure the AB management would contact the right people to get the problem sorted.

they are all into drugs and prostitution ...

they are all into drugs and prostitution ...

But, they are not the only ones.

Why is it 'objectionable in the extreme'. Because it is not PC by your standards?

So how do i have to say it then, people of undetermined origin taking over the street in large groups that make the area uncomfortable to be in. We were there just to have a chat and dinner with a few friends who all commented about it and felt uncomfortable. Also the reason we left earlier then planned.

Better to close your eyes and just pretend it is not happening?

I used to have a white South African friend who was:

1. Born in the then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe, I believe) and

2. Lived in South Africa (Jo'burg)

We pointed out to him that since both of these countries were in Africa, that in fact made him an African

It always made him angry when we did that. We just thought it was funny how he reacted to our joke.

Who?

The people at Amari Boulevard or the people at Gullivers?

The OP seems to be asking a legitimate question about the area. It is a touchy subject and even though this is Bedlam, let's exercise care and discretion in our posts.

Rule # 7 still applies to this forum:

7) Not to post slurs or degrading comments directed towards any group on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

Happy posting!

That was his problem.

I have friends from South Africa, former Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), former Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), former Tanganyka (Tanzania) who are all regarded as African. Some are of Boer stock, some of German origin, some of Anglo background. But all regard Africa as home. Their only regret is that many Europeans and Americans do not understand their love of country and continent, thinking that these people want to live in Europe.

They don't. They are African and have as much right to live their, as their ancestors built the continent up from nothing, as any other person from any other race or ethnic origin.

Mee too, I have a friend that fits this discription & boy hasnt he lived a very very interesting life. He's very intelligent & has enough life experience for about a dozen people. He now lives in Australia & I saw him a few weeks ago and he said on a number of occassions, "Australians just don't realise how good they've got it".

I don't think the OP meant anything evil by bringing up this thread & of course he's probably got very valid points about visa's etc. I think its plainly obvious to anyone with eyes, theres heaps of crappy people in Thailand & I'm not referring to any particular, colour, shape or nationality here, you only have to goto places like Pattaya, Patong and soforth to see what Im on about. This place has always been a ticking time bomb.

what about the PC Joke section? or is this exempt from this rule whistling.gif

My wife gave birth to our beautiful baby son last week and I feel like the proudest father alive.

I've just got one question though:

At what age do they stop being black? ph34r.gif

I think many come looking for the proverbial "better life" and maybe asylum. Some get caught up in undesirable pastimes in order to fund their life overseas and associated visa hassles. They can be found in some neighboring countries as well.

I did not know people still react this way about somebodies skin color.

I grew up in Amsterdam a big melting pot of many races. So i am used to all kinds of colours.

However, when people of the same race and much more important without presence of children and woman start to 'take over' an area then i start to get worried.

It happened in Amsterdam with large groups of teenagers from a single country and now i see the same but with adults from another country.

In this case i am 100% sure there is something brewing, the looks on peoples faces says a lot. I think we all know dark skin is not looked upon favorably by many Thais and that actually adds to the 'timebomb' feeling.

I searched a little and the 'problem' is already mentioned before like here . To me it seems there are many more in 2010. It seems the Thai immigration is not doing there job. Why is that? The answer to that question would be interesting.

It seems the Thai immigration is not doing there job.

Which would be to do what exactly?

Use what is left of your imagination.

Particular areas build up a particular aura over time, sometimes enhanced after returning from a period of absence, perhaps nostalgia and rememberances of past glories adding to the mix.

A street in Oxford called the Cowley Road is a profusion of colour, ethnically diverse and has a long standing community of South Asians, Caribean and African groupings, mixed in with this, many Irish bars and in recent years east European nations have been making in roads.

It has many independent local shops and all manner of competing cafes from all walks of the globe, it is where I had my first jar and my first Indian meal, although for all of my knowledge at that time, it might just have been Bangladeshi or of Pakistani Kashmir.

Thrown into this melting pot you have a large student populace of two competing Universities, the indigenous population and of course the obligatory Vietnamese house with drawn curtains, tropical heat and electricity tapped into the local grid.

Walk one way and you travel into the local community, the other, the ancient buildings of antiquity and King Charles Parliament of old, go right and you are into the green swathes of parks and the site of the historical cannon sitings of Cromwell's artillery, go left through the rabbit warren of student accommadation into an affluent area comprising amongst other things the rank and file of tall houses and you are in bed sitter land.

My point, my older brother thinks this triangle of vastly different cultures is a no go area, another brother scoffs at this heinous accusation, because he works there and me, well when I carried my pack and I lived the free life of a rover, I wandered these streets, from the running track of 4 minute mile fame, to the proliferation of Irish bars, some of them even authentic, to the green swards and historic beauty, with little fear but plenty of anticipation.

Sometimes, it is just all about perception, sometimes right, sometimes wrong, but perception all the same.

What ever you do in that area if shocked, say "Oh", "blighmy" or even " My word". But never and I mean never, go up to a large one and say........ " Golly !! You're a big lad ". For some reason it always ends in tears.

It seems the Thai immigration is not doing there job.

Evidence would be better than imagination.

You have to be kidding, right?

Oh, wait you never been there.

Because you are sure it is not happening, take a camera start filming after 21:00 and see what happens.

Please report back.
