Any thoughts on this?

Isolated whacko?

Organised whackos?

I was surprised to hear that rank and file politicians in the US normally travel without security, I think I'd be paying for my own.

Funny how this has touched the world's paranoia button. My father from the UK rang to say everyone in his pub were convinced he was a muslim !!!! ( looks a bit white to me )

I wouldn't have thought you'd find too many Muslims boozing in pubs.

Mind you I've seen one or two enjoying a bevvy or three in the Malay/Thai border towns a few years back.

Nutter and no, most politicians don't have much security, usually just a phalanx of aides. Sad as innocent bystanders were killed, including a federal judge who was just going grocery shopping.

Nutters don't need much encouragement, from people who should be more responsible, to think they are doing the right thing in their twisted version of politics:

Giffords herself criticized the target map when her office was vandalized last year.

"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.

There is a surveyor's symbol that resembles the circle used on Palin's map. (You can see it on the lower right-hand side of this U.S. Geological Survey guide to topographical map symbols). However, Palin herself referred to the targets as a "'bullseye' icon" in a post-election tweet.

No argument from me on your conclusion here Old Croc, I think you are spot on.

The far left DailyKos put a bulls-eye on Giffords as well...

I don't think we need to stop using words like "targeting', bullseye" or "crosshairs" just because 0.000001% of the population might take it literally. Those words are used everyday in marketing and noone ever gets shot. Time and money would be better spent keeping the nutters off the street in the first place.

One of the first reports I watched on TV stated the arrested shooter was a 22 yo US military Afghan veteran of American white Christian background.

Has that been discredited now? ....or since supressed?

It was my understanding, from CNN, that he had tried to enlist in the US Army, but was rejected. For privacy reasons, the army would not disclose the reason.

The burning issue in my mind is that this guy had a couple of brushes with the law. I don't know how serious they were, but generally any kind of a criminal record should prevent him from owning a gun.

A felony conviction as an adult would preclude him from passing the FBI character check to purchase a handgun. Perhaps all his legal trouble was prior to reaching his majority.

We won't know unless some enterprising investigative reporter publishes his record.

the oklahoma city bomber felt wronged, and did what he thought he needed to do to be heard. a basic want in life is to be recogonised i.e. heard, acknowledged, recogonised lets face it this most recent congress blew many a person off as not worthy of hearing, recognising, or responding to. brutal or not, nutter or not he was motivated to be heard which imo is much different than Hinkley. politicians can not make everyone happy and at the same time they are elected to be of service of those who elected them, not push their own agenda. Obama care was a hot issue for this very reason. Politicians were pushing their own agenda down the voters the way mothers push sour medicine down their childrens throats.

I think you are getting mixed up between those that speak the loudest and the wishes of the majority. I seem to remember a group called the Silent Majority.

If this young man was speaking with a gun, then he sure shouted at a lot of innocent people.

Arizona has some of the laxest gun laws in the United States.

Regardless of what side, hate speech is just wrong and just goes to show how extreme some have become. A very sad thing indeed.

Isn't there a pro-gun lobby school of thought that if everyone had the right to carry guns openly that this type of thing couldn't happen?

If the situation wasn't so serious early stories of the offender being restrained by unarmed people sitting on him would be almost amusing.

It appears that giving people the right to bear arms doesn't necessarily make them want to do it.

The problem there is that there can only, in the current system of democratic government, be two options on any subject - pro and con.

It may be that the 'con' representatives can modify a proposed piece of legislation to be more suitable for more people, but to enact any law means that there will be some who are against it, or are disagreeably affected by it.

And neither major party in any current democracy represents a majority of the people on every policy. You pick the party with most plusses, but there are always also minuses.

And in Europe now there is also an un-elected bureaucracy in Brussels that formulates laws that are imposed on all members of the EU, without open discussion. This is Fascism (or Communism) of the worst kind. Democracy is dying in the EU, not that it has been a healthy organism for a long time.

Too much government by little men, rather than a light hand on the wheel from a few devoted patriots, has taken the ideal of democracy away from most people. Those that now come to democracy from chaos (former Soviet countries; African countries and the like) will need a firm hand on the tiller for many years, after which the grip can be relaxed. But for long-term democratic countries (the West) we have allowed democracy to become the plaything of self-serving politicos who do not listen to the people, but stand up and say 'I know what is good for you' and actually think that everyone has the same desires and dreams as they themselves do. (And these guys also make a hell of a lot of money for themselves along the way - Tony Bliar came into office with virtually nothing and is now worth over 100 million pounds, for instance).

How can the individual make himself heard these days? I do it by writing to TV, but that doesn't change anything - it just lets me rant and then get back to my work and my family and try to make a living in a strange land. Anyone who wants to make a difference has to choose a different path.

Actually, one of the people who held him down did have a gun, but he did not choose to use it. ;)

The thought of gun toting citizens opening fire on an offender in a crowded shopping mall is bit horrifying isn't it?

More power to him for showing restraint but I suspect he'll come in for criticism in certain circles for "not using his gun and saving lives" earlier.

He ran outside when he heard the shooting and someone had already tackled the alleged perpetrator.

To me with the reported history as well as the horrific actions on the day, this guy is in need of mental care.................... Bet rather than sedate him, they execute him.

Could take a while, there are currently 126 people on death row in Arizona.

Could take a while, there are currently 126 people on death row in Arizona.

Looks like a queue jumper as well as a mass murderer to me..................

You can rest assure that there is no queue on death row.  No long line waiting to get in.

According to my resources this person was part of Project MKULTRA3.

Sponsored by giant lizards from the planet Zucous no doubt. ;)

Sarah Palin's "blood libel" speech....what's a "pundint"?

Never mind. At least she's a tad more eloquent than Bush.

People have pointed out the inciting words of Tea Party front women Palin and Sharron Angle, and I wonder how healthy it is for political leaders to say things like, ".......you know if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I'll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out."

(2nd ammendment refers to gun laws)

This kind of speech would certainly encourage nutters to do what they may otherwise be too timid to do.

How about the left?

Check out this left wing hate speech

The following quotes are from the left wing haters with links to the quotes. Conservatives have been dealing with this kind of institutionalized left wing hate for years:

"A spoiled child (Bush) is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: [audio sound of 4 gunshots being fired.] Just try it, you little b*stard. [audio of gun being cocked]." A "humor bit" from the
Show

"I want to go up to the closest white person and say: 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing' and then slap him, just for my mental health" New York city councilman

"..And then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq 'We have our good days and our bad days.' We should put this S.O.B. up against a wall and say 'This is one of our bad days' and pull the trigger." From a fundraising ad put out by the

"I believe in ecoterrorism."

"…In an ideal world, American consumers could be convinced to do the right thing through an appeal to logic with public service messages like the 'What Would Jesus Drive?' TV campaign, but the kind of people who would buy a car that increases the risk to other motorists in an accident can't be reasoned with. They're selfish and stupid. It's unfortunate that drivers must worry that their SUVs are being targeted by insulting stickers and Molotov cocktails, but one thing's for sure: It couldn't be happening to a more deserving group of people."
winks at ecoterrorism

"F*** God D*mned Joe the God D*mned Motherf*cking plumber! I want Motherf*cking Joe the plumber dead." Liberal talk show host
on the air.

"Republicans don't believe in the imagination, partly because so few of them have one, but mostly because it gets in the way of their chosen work, which is to destroy the human race and the planet. Human beings, who have imaginations, can see a recipe for disaster in the making; Republicans, whose goal in life is to profit from disaster and who don't give a hoot about human beings, either can't or won't. Which is why I personally think they should be exterminated before they cause any more harm." The Village Voice's
, in a theater review of all places

(Rush Limbaugh)" just wants the country to fail. To me that's treason. He's not saying anything different than what Osama Bin Laden is saying. You might want to look into this, sir, because I think Rush Limbaugh was the 20th hijacker but he was just so strung out on Oxycontin he missed his flight. … Rush Limbaugh, I hope the country fails, I hope his kidneys fail, how about that?"
