Things You Learned Today

Featured Replies

You learn something new everyday, regardless of how insignificant it may be.

Here's mine for starters: Connecticut isn't spelt as I have always thought it was

Thai bloody drivers! I was behind one on my way home from work and he indicated to turn left and what does he go and do? he actually turns left!

How am I supposed to prepare myself with these bloody mind games?!

Does that mean you're a Yellow Shirt (as opposed to Thaired)?

I learned that Makro is a Dutch company (with Thai partners here, obviously), and that it has many stores in many nations and that Makro is just one of the businesses it's Dutch (privately held ) parent is involved in.

I relearned that I CAN trust my instincts. I met a pretty gal a few weeks ago that I thought was honest as well as hard working, and she might be worth adopting. Today I found out for sure that she was.

Today I learnt that it's Friday. Hoorah!!

And last month's salary is in the bank. Hoorah!

But seriously, if I didn't learn something new each day, I would consider it a wasted day. One of the reasons I keep working, and enjoying my work, is that I can keep finding new ideas, new ways to carry out tasks - and pass this on to other people who prefer doing things in the same old way and really do not want to listen to me.

Hardly, she's 29 but looks 16. And she DOES work a 10 hour day over a hot stove for the standard 200 baht. I enjoy helping people who work hard without asking for help.

Oh, and I did learn other things yesterday. I went to our thursday night meeting of writers. It's alway educational listening to comments when either myself or others read their work.

It's too early yet for me to have learned anything new today. I'll report back later.

However, yesterday I learned that Salamat is Tagalog for thankyou

Crikey !!!

I thought the Missus had dropped the salad on the mat.

(It certainly looked like it)

In Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Indonesian Salamat is used in greetings

Salamat Datang = Welcome

Selamat Jalan = Goodbye (have a safe journey)

Salamat Sore = Good Morning (soray for pronunciation)

Few others that I can't remember of the top of my head. (Noggin hurts)

She may well have dropped the salad on the mat, Humph. But when you pick it up, she will say Salamat (if she is a Philipine of course)

Yes, she's pinay.

Sorry! Selamat sore is 'good afternoon'.

Selamat bpargi (as in 'guy who drives a barge' when you've a fly on your lip) is good morning

Selamat malam is 'good night' (as in 'good sleep' or 'sleep well')

But in Tagalog (which is what I had learned yesterday) Magandang Umaga is good morning (or beautiful morning) Magandang Harpon is good afternoon and Magandang Gabi is good evening.

The first one is certainly correct. (I use it all day)

Trying to teach the Missus to write proper English. She is well into 'texting' English, but uses it everywhere

Example "r u OK? tc" for "are you OK? Take care." Does annoy me at times.

My rent was overdue for this month.

I found out today that it has been paid. So I still have a roof over my heed.

Also, I have had a friend stay for a week, didn't put his hand in his pocket once - Pats is out of pocket. I found out after all these years that he has been doing it every time he visits these lake shores. Never again shall this person stay in my abode.

Back to me being gullible.... again and again and (probably) again.

Big F***ing soft lump.

Today I relearned how little it takes to make people happy in Thailand. I love those smiles.

Oh, and sometimes the hugs that go along with them. :)

I learned today that babies are a little bit important to women once they turn 40! :)

I learned today that I don't have a job anymore.

I'm torn between selling the house and hitting SE Asia on the proceeds, or tightening the belt drastically and go serious job-hunting.

My kids are the only thing holding me back from the former.

No, no, sell the house, invest the proceeds, then head for the mysterious east.

It's the selling of the house that concerns me with regards to my kids. I had a long hard road paying for it, and I don't want them to face the same uphill struggle.

I know that there is an argument that I worked for it so I should enjoy (the profits of) it.

My kids are great. I want to at least leave them with a bit of a head start.

What I thought is to rent it to my daughter......but today she moved into a flat that is half the rent I would have to ask from her (I'd be asking way below market value).

I don't know.

If you have to proceeds of the sale you can always put it on another house.

Tie it up so it's out of reach of temptation.

Just take the interest, get some casual work, move around, take it easy for a while.

Or why not just put the house in the hands of an agent?

Rents in Auckland are going thru' the roof.

Mates former house next door is let at $NZ400,00

I could get that easy, missus and I could spend time in The LoS and Pinas.

Ever so tempting.

Harky, a bit of spit and polish for your house and yerd almost be in that league.

I love your setting.

So is that renting for 400.00 a day or a week, month, hour or year?

I never realised that the capital city of Thailand actually had the longest city name in the world. Go figure blink.gif

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.

and now knowing that, I wish to have my address changed on the back of my driving licence so everything is hunky dorey. laugh.gif
