Curious what they're charging? Or more to the point, are you looking for someone dirt cheap, or just reasonable?

I ask because I was pretty impressed with the guy who did my logo, if you're interested I could give him your email.

Just remember you get what you pay for in most cases. Places like the one the OP mentioned are cheap cos they use off-the-shelf designs rather than create something for you specifically. If cheap and cheerful is what you want and it's not that important to you or your business that you are "branded" successfully, then they can be a good resource.

Agreed. They might be even better served by going to Pantip and buying something like "LogoMaster.." (thinking back to the old "PrintMaster" programs with clip art and helped you form all kinds of stationary, forms, letterheads, etc..

Its more than a logo, it's also your site colors, your general look, and if you really get into it all your forms, letterhead, etc. They're basically setting these parameters to the point that your skin designer can take over and create your look/branding.

After going through this a few times, I think a good logo and skin designer are money very well spent.

Well these design services which are US based start at 200usd. Given TIT I would expect way cheaper. But I don't really expect members here to bid for this work. What I was hoping for was one of these competition type services offered by one of the emerging economies. India is supposed to be great and fantastically cheap for this sort of thing... but where do you go to offer a job?

I agree with this:

hence I want to get it right from the get-go.

I would guess some of these from developing nations are quite good, but it takes more than being good. With this sort of thing communication is really important when being able to relate your artistic viewpoint/desires, and just as important is there is usually the requirement for a continuing relationship with your designer/skinner. Assuming the site will be successful.

Also be careful if your logo designer or skinner uses copyrighted images they don't own. They'll be long gone when you find out. Look for a mix of watermark and other indicators, or just ask them to show you the receipt for where they paid for the image.

My logo designer charges by the hour. If I would have accepted his first idea I could have got away very cheap. But some back and forth exchanges, a bunch of different ideas put to graphics, and it turned out to be more but still worth it imo.

Getting it right the first time is possible, but don't be surprised if after you go into this a bit, look at the results for a while, etc.. you'll get new/better ideas and will want to improve on things.

Good luck with your site.

Thanks BJ; can you tell us a bit about the process?

You pay upfront?

You get a bunch of designs and narrow it down and refine from there??

Firstly its bk not bj (he is a man shitty fan ;)

I dont have all the details because it happened before I joined but my understanding is they sent out a notification on that site with specific details of the kind of logo wanted (and as importantly not wanted), I dont think they paid up front but I could check - maybe 50% or something.
