Can anyone advise whether what we plan to do is perfectly ok with no problem?

British dad and thai mum.

We have first child with UK & Thai passports.

2nd child born August 2005 just got British passport.

We are going to UK in a couple of weeks for about 6 months.

We would prefer to get Thai passport when we return to Thailand.

Baby would then return to Thailand on Brit passport and get 30 day visa stamp, then get Thai passport and later leave on Thai passport.

I hope no problem but could the following be an issue?:-

Baby will return to Thailand on return ticket to Thailand (so no return to UK).

But we will be travelling on from Thailand in a couple of months to Oz/NZ.

Also any problem if eneters on UK passport and maybe no record of him leaving if he leaves on Thai passport??

Any other concerns??

Why not get the Thai passport while you are in the UK and solve all your problems in one stroke? I am sure others can provide detailed instructions if you do not find them in a search as it seems to be a well traveled road.

If you do the other way I can't believe an airline would refuse boarding of your child but I would carry birth certificate as that would likely help. As for departure I would use the UK passport and then return on the Thai passport to remove the loose end.

Both solution are OK:

Option 1: getting Thai passport in Thailand, going to UK with Thai Passport, and coming back with Thai Passport. The Thai Passport will have a TM Card.

Option 2: going to UK with UK Passport, getting Thai passport in UK, and coming back with Thai Passport. The Thai Passport will not have the TM Card.

Option 2 is not a problem, when you come back it will be the first time you enter Thailand with the Thai Passport (without the TM Card).

After this, the thing to remember is then to ALWAYS use the Thai Passport to Enter/Exit Thailand.

Airline will not ask questions, maybe only see both passports.

Immigration will start asking questions if the stamps, TM card and in/out records are out of sync.

PS:

I got one kid born in Thailand, and one outside ... so knows the challenges ...

Singa, your post implies that dual nationality is unacceptable. I thought that the Thai government had finally accepted dual nationality?

Or are you just saying that once you get a TM exit number against a particular PP then you should always use the same PP next entry to avoid hassle?

To my knowledge, there is no laws in Thailand that prevents dual nationality, unlike in Singapore for example.

If your kid enter Thailand with it's Foreign PP, in theory you will need to get him the appropriate Visa to stay in Thailand ... which is a bit funny, as he hold the Thai citizenship.

When he exits Thailand, after staying more than 30 days, an officer will come and see you, look at the both PP, smile and write something on the Foreign PP. No overstay fine until he/she is 14.

Not a big deal.

After 14 what happen ... I don't know yet :-)

If by mistake, your kid enter with Foreign PP, but then exist with his/her Thai PP. he will end-up with Two TM Cards, and then you will face a bit of problem.

What you want to avoid, is the situation where, the kid try to come back in Thailand using his Thai PP, but do not have a TM Card on it AND the Thai Passport has already been used.
