Bedlam mass grave uncovered in London

Posted Thu Apr 7, 2011 5:32am AEST

Archaeologists in central London have uncovered a 16th century mass grave containing the remains of patients from the former St Bethlehem's mental hospital, known as Bedlam.

The archaeologists were preparing the way for construction of a new underground rail link.

It is thought thousands of skeletons might have to be removed to enable the building of a new ticket hall.

The original St Bethlehem's was first used as a hospital in the 14th century and has become notorious for the cruel and degrading way in which inmates were treated.

In the 18th century Londoners paid to go and stare at and mock the inmates, who were kept shackled for much of the time.

The hospital was moved to another site in 1815 and the site of the original Bedlam is now occupied by Liverpool Street station.

I somehow can't remember it being called Saint Bethlehem - that was Saint Bartholemew - but just Bethlehem Hospital for the Insane. But then this is an Australian report ...

"Bedlam" sounds like it would be a linguistic contraction of "Bethlehem".

Anything slightly controversial and the misandronists come out of the woodwork to belittle every male on the planet (with the exception of their own spouses)!

what a laugh. funny how you like to blame the tiny percentage of women posters on tv for every little issue you have with the forum. speaks volumes about you. But I wonder just where these posts belittling every man on the planet are? But wherever they might be they would be a tiny amount in comparison to the ones aimed at women. you really are a joke, a blind one at that :bah:

These posts are mostly removed from the forum. B)

The Twilight Zone was not a documentary you know.

delusions run high in bedlam

Not sure about this " Delusions" bloke, but I reckon Harky and Ms Gabor smoke a bit before they post as well

in general, young boys are boring, mature men are ok, and old men, except for my hsuband, well, whatever was wrong with them in their youth, just gets worse as they get older.

Was the mass grave found under a teak door?

Teak rots slow.;)

well done, one post. tame in comparison to the too numerous to mention posts by men on this forum about men, let alone the drivel they spew about women. lame

or maybe it's just that it's a women (Bina I beleive, it'ss good netiquette to actually credit the poster) who posted it. Is it just that women have opinions on men that bother you so much or that they might dare voice them? Cause I never see anything from you moaning when a similar themed post is made by a man. funny that!!

Is that your best shot?

Apparently yes, it was full of woodworm

Now Bedlam is revolting.................. :o

Bit harsh, some could do with a shower, mind.....

I'm only hanging on by a fingernail. I doubt I would be missed anyway.

I've been abused in the past when I suggested it should be renamed Embedlam, and it's only become more that way since then.

As a private forum with a qualifying post count, I used to think it was for reasonable adult discussion of some of the more out-there subjects concerning Thailand. However,it's become so PC the only things most feel safe talking about are from the joke pages of the web.

This may be my last post here.

Waiting. <_<

C'mon Croc, less of the sympathy vote

I am a little hacked off Pingers, I disappear for an hour or two and you try and take my title as resident Troll, I would have enjoyed setting that poser of your OP.

However, you would have to agree, that even a year ago, the question might have set off a bunch of posters like a demented string of slip fielders, dancing for a tickle that the umpire hasn't seen.

But now, no hands in the ruck, no illegal scummaging , crickey it's time to get back in the saddle and start winding a few people up, where's the sandbox again?

Hands in the ruck, slip fielders, in the saddle.......is that a very mixed metaphor or a new sport derived from polo and developed by Aussies and Brit public schoolers?

^^Quite right, Moss; a reason why I never post when p!ssed. Unfortunately, however, at the time of my OP (a little before 10 am), I was still enjoying the effects of the night before...

Yesterday, the only active thread in Bedlam was 'Slutwalk', with Moss chasing IanForbes down a narrow laneway. RIP Bedlam...
