Dude...?

Featured Replies

The favourite American expressive that developed from the GEN X {generation haven't a clue} crowd and clearly has fused itself into the broad linguistic lexicon needs to cease. Just stop. One might hear it through American TV and film reference....or most indubitably found scripted amongst a few posters here at TV. STOP. It's beyond fashion and mostly embarrassing to hear and read. DUDES - find another reasonable directive to address someone. PLEASE STOP. Very sophomoric. Dude......<_<

I would guess that you would prefer OLD CHAP, but that seems to have gone the way of the dodo bird.

Sure dude, I totally agree with you.

Peace, man.

.....sure. I'd except that. Or even the old proverbial "mate"B)

Surely a 'dude' was a description of a fanatical follower of fashion?

Only in America has it been changed to signify someone who doesn't have a clue about life. (As I understand from various movies)

That is not really what it means, but, it is true that a lot of people who use the term in a serious way, do not seem to have a clue.

There is something strange about two men calling each other "mate" - unless I guess they are trying to mate with each other. Then again, men who refer to other men as mate can often be found in bars mostly full of other men so maybe there is something to it.

btw - "Dude" was around before Gen X was ever born.

Harry pays tribute to William 'the dude'...

Prince Harry paid a moving tribute to his brother ‘The Dude’ and his new sister-in-law ‘The Duchess’ during a heartfelt speech at their evening wedding reception on Friday.

One partygoer leaving Buckingham Palace event in the early hours of Saturday told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Harry said William was the perfect brother. It was exactly how you would expect a best man’s speech to be. He cracked loads of jokes about William. He called him a “dude” several times. He kept coming back to it, saying “What a dude”.’

Not a gen-exer and I have heard the word dude used since I was a very young teen. and frankly, anyone who uses the word curmudgeonly to describe themselves probably shouldn't be commenting on modern slang as language changes and evolves. You can easily have heard these same complaints about words that are now in modern use.

Shakespeare probably got the same load of hassle from curmudgeons of his period for his use of the language too.
