Syria To Be New Member Of Unhrc

Featured Replies

It seems Syria is now being touted for membership on the UN Human Rights Council. I wonder if the Council will investigate their newest member for Human Rights abuses before or after they gain membership.

Despite Reports of Brutality Toward Civilians, Syria to Join U.N.'s Human Rights Council

Oct. 2: Syrian President Bashar Assad, right, gestures, after he is awarded with Iran's highest national medal by his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran, Iran. Assad has overlooked the White House's efforts to improve relations in favor of alliances with Iran and militant groups such as Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas.

The brutal crackdown by Syrian President Bashar Assad may finally be getting the attention of world leaders -- but apparently not enough to stop Syria from becoming the newest member of the U.N. Human Rights Council.

And despite calling for an independent investigation into the crackdown, which has left hundreds dead, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon apparently won’t do much about blocking Syria’s path to the human rights group.

I'd be curious to know the records and history, as it applies to human rights {whatever that is}, of the other sainted member countries of the council.

UN Human Rights Council to hold special session on situation in Syria

27 April 2011 – The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold a special session on Friday on the situation in Syria amid mounting concern over the recent killing or wounding of hundreds of peaceful protesters in the Middle East country.

The United States requested the special session, which will take place in Geneva, on behalf of 16 Member States, according to a press release issued by the 47-member Council.

On the contrary Google is the wisdom of crowds.

What are "rights"?

As the op refers to the United Nations - Click here for the definition of Human Rights.

It was queried figuratively.....

Yes, that's obvious. Yet the crowds ain't too wise, are they?

Does this help?

Israel the only free country!!!??? I have to guess that whoever compiled that outrageous false propaganda is either a deluded fool or a bigotted Israeli.....Israel is an aparheid country with 2nd class citizens with less rights than a common peasant in Libya.

Someone needs to read something other than hateful propaganda. Arab citizens are given the same rights as everyone else in Israel.

and pigs can fly

No worries. All this mess will be resolved when Jesus comes back.

Wrong. Very wrong.

Off the top of my head, just one example..... Israeli marriage laws prohibit anyone (Arab citizen or Jew) marrying a Palestinian to have their spouse take Israeli citizenship. Anyone marrying ANY other racial or ethnic group can have their spouse move to Israel and take up citzenship.

Someone needs to read something other than hateful propaganda that supports apartheid.

Oh...another one....Jewish only communities. Very reminiscent of old apartheid South Africa.

You have just proved my point, IF this is true, it applies equally to all citizens whether Jewish or Arab.

Try sticking to the issue.

The only difference as far as rights goes is that Arabs are not drafted into the military.

I have not proved your point at all......especially since you avoided the mention of Jewish only communities.

As to the marriage laws...Israel discriminates against citizens who marry a particular ethnic group.

You have just proved my point again and I ignored your claims because I can not find any mention of it and - unhappily - having to prevent possible terrorists from infiltrating Israel is caused by the Palestinian Arabs themselves and again applies to both Jewish and Arab citizens - no discriminating. Throwing in a red herring is not working.

I would be interested to know the wording of the law with regard to marriage:

marrying a Palestinian to have their spouse take Israeli citizenship.

In some countries, for example the US, marriage for the purpose of immigration is illegal.

Try this Wiki article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_and_the_apartheid_analogy which has a section on it and also I believe has links to specific marriage laws articles

Interesting reading..... a child of an Israeli citizen and a Palestinian MAY live in Israel, but is expelled at age 12!

"Get out young 12 year old....you were born here and have an Israeli mother, but your father is Palestinian, so out you go!"

"What? You're handicapped and completely dependant on your mother? So what, you have Palestinian blood in your veins, get out now...it's the law!"

Too bad that the Israelis have had to adapt such harsh measures to prevent terrorism from the Islamic hate-mongers.

Harcourt, thanks for the link. I'll try and take a close read of it later--I am going to be a little busy today.

I spent a number of years working in the Middle East, so I've been bombarded from all sides (both literally and figuratively, I might add) about the situation.

I also spent some time in Syria. This was during the time the current leader's father was in power. It was a tightly controlled country at the time.

Human rights didn't seem to be very high on the agenda.

We may have strayed into Israeli affairs more than is necessary for a discussion of this thread.
