A Kiwi Perspective On Bin Laden

WELLINGTON (AFP) – An outspoken New Zealand Maori politician apologised Thursday after praising slain Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden as a freedom fighter who stood up for his people.

OBL was a very wealthy man, he could have spent his money and energy on building homes, hospitals, and schools rather than an army.

Perhaps this Maori doesn't consider himself a New Zealander, therefore not expressing the expected and popular mantra of the Western world.

Groups that consider themselves oppressed are likely to look at Bin Laden in a different light than other groups. For example, Native American Indians are quite upset that the code name "Geronimo" was given to Bin Laden.

I was watching some stuff on Bin Laden on CNN (I think--I wasn't paying that close attention to the TV). It was a brief discussion on him as a husband and father. Seems he was a much kinder and more considerate person in these areas of his life.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

So was the Iceman, but he was a hitman and a serial killer. He was kind to his family though.

....and what sort of indication would qualify the Maori gent as a "Liberal"? Because he doesn't kow tow to the popular Western convention and indoctrination? He could be to the right of Atilla-the-Hun and express such opinions.......such shouldn't mark any claim of a "political identity".

I kind of doubt that a right-wing guy would be praising Osama Bin Ladin.

What is right-wing?

native american indians will have their day, just have to wait for the PC hurricanes "quantessa" "latrina" and "deontay" to pass.

geronimo is quite an evocative name i think and i can see why they'd be a bit upset that the name was used for such a coward. i suppose durkadurkamohammedjihad would be a bit long. "shitbag" would have been a good choice.

I'm not an AE but when I first heard they had used Geronimo even I thought it was a mistake.Te Wherowhero would have been more appropriate.

Why? Most Americans wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

Might as well have been Little Red Riding Hood or Jack The Ripper.

I guess Geronimo was chosen by the previous administration?

Indeed, it is. Yet we will insist that there is much difference in political philosophies and identities, the same that we hold on to so dearly. Clearly, invented entities fabricated by the establishment to keep us distracted. Might be the only force in our world that is universal - the rulers, controllers - one and the same.

True that ;)

It gives the folks at home a feeling that they have a choice this left vs right story.
