Crime Thai Government Websites Defaced in Cambodian Hacker Attack
Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post A group of Cambodian hackers has caused an uproar by defacing several Thai government websites amid a simmering border dispute. The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) of Thailand has received arrest warrants for the accused, working closely with international bodies to apprehend and prosecute them. The June 3 alert from the Cyber Intelligence Community triggered the investigation. The hackers, identifying as “bl4ck_cyb3r”, launched their cyberattack to protest against ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. From April through June, websites were vandalised with messages from other groups like “ANONSEC-KH”, “H3C4KEDZ”, and “NXBBSEC (Hacker Cambodia)”, reflecting political motives tied to the border clash. CCIB Division 2 superintendent, Police Colonel Pakornkitt Thanawarinkul, confirmed court-approved arrest warrants for two suspects under the Computer Crimes Act. "Efforts are underway to identify the perpetrators and bring them to Thailand for prosecution," he declared. The pursuit involves international cooperation, given that the hackers operated anonymously. The hackers' actions signal a significant leap in cyber warfare as a protest tool. Thai officials, citing the Bangkok Post, are taking the incursions seriously. This infiltration has raised alarms about the security of Thailand's digital infrastructure, especially amidst persisting tensions with Cambodia. In response to the breaches, the Thai government pledges to bolster cybersecurity measures and penalise those responsible. The attacks underscore the urgent need for international collaboration in tackling cybercrime and safeguarding the country's digital assets. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-06-11 -
