Iran to blind criminal with acid in 'eye for an eye' justice

Retribution granted to woman who had acid thrown in her face by man she refused to marry

WARNING! very graphic photo of the woman-victim in the article by The Guardian:

In a literal application of the sharia law of an eye for an eye, Iran is ready for the first time to blind a man with acid, after he was found guilty of doing the same to a woman who refused to marry him.

Majid Movahedi, 30, is scheduled to be rendered unconscious in Tehran's judiciary hospital at noon on Saturday while Ameneh Bahrami, his victim, drops acid in both his eyes, her lawyer said.

Do you consider this a correct sentence?

it doesn't matter what we consider correct. "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" is prevailing Sharia Law in Iran. it also doesn't matter that most parts of Sharia Law have been copied from the Bible, Old Testament.

and when i look at the "graphic" picture of the disfigured young lady i feel the sentence "5 drops of acid in each eye" is not justified. besides blinding that criminal some punishment should be applied such as slowly crushing his balls and/or slicing his pecker with a blunt and rusty knife into small pieces without being rendered unconscious.

It's hard to feel the guy doesn't deserve it.

I agree. This is justice. :bah:

^^ Does her look 'before' anyhow matter? In the 'after' photo we see what happened to her.

I read somewhere that also the Iranians, officials and the judge, had ask her not to do it.

Albeit its in the book of law, retribution in such cases is seems to be seldom the option chosen by the victims of a crime. But this woman specially requested it and insist to do it.

G. Spivak gave us Westerners the line "White men saving brown women from brown men" to question our Euro-centric view.

What do the Sharia critics among these white men say now ...

She sure isn't marriage material now.:ermm:

You sound just like someone else on here. I can't quite remember though,

I think she's a very brave woman who went through unimaginable horror, pain and a long process after the act by this man but above all she's trying to set an example in such a way that these things do not happen to others anymore in the future.

Every man in Iran, hearing about this case will think a thousand times before doing this also....knowing he will be blinded by acid as well..not a pretty idea :ermm:

"..........."The person who did this deserves to go through the same suffering. Only this way will he understand my pain … my intention is to ask for the application of the law not just for revenge but also so that no other woman will have to go through this. It is to set an example," Bahrami was quoted by the Spanish newspaper ABC as saying."

At a very primal and gut level, it feels right. At an intellectual level, it feels very wrong.

As far as Zzaa09's comment: "She sure isn't marriage material now." She is to a blind man, perhaps.

Sorry, this story is obviously untrue. Utter nonsense. I know this to be a fact because it was reported in the Daily Mail and as we all know that we shouldn't believe anything they write.

Your comment is not funny, using the tragic case of this woman with her seriously crippled and blinded face. That the Daily Mail follows up on this case is of course butter and marmelade on their infamous toast.

More serious reports about this case can be read in other English, German (she published a book in Germany), Swiss, French, Italian, Spanish and other news channels on Radio and TV all around the world.

He is not being funny. He is pointing out that The Daily Mail stories are not always inaccurate.

You didn't laugh? That's good because It wasn't meant to be funny. The fact is when some posters here don't have any facts or logic to back a position they fall back on "ooooo, it's the Daily Mail  ". That's not funny either, it's sad.

Let's stick to the topic. The topic isn't the Daily Mirror.

Couldn't agree more.

Yep. Does sound familiar, doesn't it?

Good for her to be able to inflict the same on him. It's not often women in those medeiaval countries get the chance of retaliation, most likely they are killed themselves etc.

The fact that he shall be put under anaesthetic before his punishment should not happen.

(I'm not very good with words with lots of a and e's!!)

They should just put her in front of him and hand her the bottle of acid and say "throw", she may miss with a few drops that may drop down below....

I watched the Al Jazeera report on this. Apparently, because of all the publicity, the sentence is postponed to Sunday.

The victim will not be administering the acid drips herself, a doctor will (I don't know how that fits with the Hippocratic Oath, but never mind).

Public opinion in Iran on the matter: Of those that oppose the sentence, most are women, and of those that support the sentence, most are men. Suprising.

Personally, I support the sentence.

That's amazing indeed...but on the other hand, women have a more kind (softer) heart than men and most women are not into cruelty themselves but I can't judge about Iran men and women.

Rights group urges Iran not to blind woman's attacker with acid

By the CNN Wire StaffMay 14, 2011 -- Updated 0919 GMT (1719 HKT)

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- A human rights group on Saturday urged Iranian authorities not to put acid in the eyes of a man found guilty of blinding a woman who scorned him.

Majid Movahedi is scheduled to be blinded by having five drops of acid in each eye Saturday, according to Amnesty International.

It was unclear what time -- or whether -- the punishment will take place Saturday. The semiofficial Iranian Students' News Agency, or ISNA, reported Saturday that the acid punishment had been postponed and another date hadn't been established.

Movahedi was convicted in 2008 of throwing a bucket of acid on Ameneh Bahrami.

Iran postpones blinding sentence, report says

From: The Washington Post

By Thomas Erdbrink,

Updated: Saturday, May 14, 1:28 PM

TEHRAN — Iranian judicial authorities postponed Saturday the blinding of a man who was convicted of throwing a bucket of sulfuric acid in the face of a young woman after she had refused to marry him.

Fars news agency reported that the sentence — which is controversial in Iran — was postponed for unknown reasons. The victim, Ameneh Bahrami, 34, who was disfigured and blinded as a result of the attack, had come to the Judiciary's hospital in Tehran, where the punishment was to be carried out.

Is he supposed to be only blinded, or will he get his whole face disfigured too?

Which are sound reasons enough that matriarchies should be given the reins worldwide. Perhaps are existences would benefit greatly. in lieu of the false posturing that manifest with this macho shit......

Where matriarchies exist, they tend to stultify.

It is the abrasive male genes that push humanity forward, the female tends to nest-build and be satisfied with what is already there.

That's an almost sexist way of defining and classification between male & female in society. I think a lot of females wouldn't agree with you.

Not sexist, and not nonsense......I think you may have a point.
