French Government Warns Of Potential Mass Suicides Over Predictions World Will End On December 21, 2012

The French government has warned of the risk of mass suicides in the country by people who believe the world will self-destruct next year.

Recent disasters - including the earthquake in Japan - as well as anxiety over pandemics and economic concerns - are creating a global climate of fear, which for some are omens of impending doom.

The hamlet of Bugarach, in the south of France, has attracted the attention of a government watchdog which monitors cults and suspicious spiritual activities.

Bugarach - and the rocky outcrop of Pic de Bugarach - have had an influx of New Age visitors in recent months who believe it is the only place in the world which will survive an Apocalypse on December 21, 2012.

This is the date when many believe the world will end according to an ancient Mayan prophecy.

there was also a comment that did seem interesting under the article

Personally ive done ALLOT of research on dec 21, 2012. And it is not just the Mayan Calender that points to that date. Im not going to go into it, because its something that people should look up themselves. Plus im no nut job preacher... Its not going to be the end of days, it will be a change of ways. Just because its the end of the Mayan Calender doesnt mean its the end of the world. The calender is in fact a galactic calender, and its coming to the end of a galactic year, where there will be a galactic alignment with the centre of our milky way. Scientist have "claimed" that this alignment shouldnt effect our planet, but then again scientist say that Bee's shouldnt be able to fly and they still can...I would highly recommend that people should just do a bit of research about it. I was a sceptic once and ive come to my conclusion as to what will happen. There is too much evidence pointing to catastrophic events happening. Its just people opinions saying that nothing will happen.

Off topic, but is the expert a ladyboy?

Whenever one of these tinfoil hat loons (I'm talking about Alice from Surrey - not Boater :P ) makes a ridiculous claim they always tell you to look it up yourself or go and watch a 4 hour video of totally unconnected clips on Youtube. If you ask them to explain exactly what they mean in sentences that contain just facts they run away or change the subject.

Mass suicides by people who believe the world will end next year? There will be a lot of competition for the Darwin Award this time around.

Haven't you all realised yet? This IS the end of the world... geological time.

Mass suicides by people who believe the world will end next year? There will be a lot of competition for the Darwin Award this time around.

Yes, this is the best part. Why commit suicide if the world is coming to an end and you will die anyway? The only reason is to end your own world if the world around you doesn't end... Does that make sense? Well, not to me.

Anyway, the myth about the world coming to an end on 21 Dec 2012 apparently comes from the end of the Mayan Calendar. However, the website apocalypticians forget one thing:

Quote

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?

A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Of course, these are only scientist who said this, not serious researchers like Ms. J.Z. Knight or Alice, Surrey.

On a more practical note, can somebody please point me to a website where the true believers sell their houses? Since they won't need them any more after 21 Dec 2012, they will probably sell them quite cheaply. I am also taking into account that they will need money only to last them and their families through to that date, which shouldn't be too much in the hillside village mentioned in the article.

Presumably these French people who believe the end of the world is coming at the end of next year consider themselves to be Christians? If so (a) don't they know suicide is a sin? and (B) what's the Maya calendar got to do with them?

If we get over those problems, what good is suicide going to do them?

Tom, why should they sell their houses? Nobody else will need them either, will they? And what good to them will the proceeds be?

I don't know whether they are Christians, the article doesn't say anythng about that. Mayan religion supercedes this anyway, as it is older.

Suicide will of course not do them any good, they are not so selfish to seek anything good for themselves. Since they believe the world will end anyway, it will be an utterly useless act. It might do the genepool good, though.

They should sell their houses because they won't need them any more: Either they commit suicide, or - so they believe - the world will cease to exist (or both). I will need that house, because I won't commit suicide and I have no reason to believe that the world will cease to exist (but let's watch the nuclear race closely).

You're right, they won't need the proceeds, so they should in fact give me their houses for free. Alas, I don't think that will happen.

I give up trying to be rational! Jonestown, Waco, now Bugarach... well, at least it reduces the number of nutters, but there are still plenty left.

But if the world ends for them, it'll end for you too... so you won't get any benefit out of their houses after all.
