Heavy and sustained rainfall brings Pattaya to its knees

PATTAYA: -- Following 16 hours of sustained and heavy rainfall in and around Pattaya City, millions of Baht worth of damage was caused and severe flooding effectively shut down the city for most of Sunday.

We received many reports and pictures showing the devastation caused by the rains and as the water subsided craters in the middle of roads were exposed and damage caused to houses in low-lying areas became evident. For most of Sunday Morning Pattaya Beach Road and Pattaya Second Road were waist-height in flood water in some places and on the Sukhumvit Road from South to Central Pattaya the water was over 1 meter in depth. There was little the authorities could do and Traffic Police along with Rescue Services were stretched to the limit as they rescued stranded motorists and residents in the worst-affected areas.

The Governor of Chonburi, Khun Wichit, came to Pattaya on Sunday to see for himself the utter devastation caused by the floods and was not happy with an area close to the beach which he identified as illegal construction on publicly-owned land. The Mayor of Pattaya and Chief of Banglamung District were there too and were told that the Governor was initially puzzled as to why the flood waters did not recede in a speedy manner as has happened on countless occasions in the past. The Governor has asked for immediate explanations from the local authorities as to why the flood waters remain.
