Is there a time limit in which , you have to apply for a renewal of a one year license after it has expired....someone told me within 1 year after expiry, but I would like to hear other expert views.

Thanks

Don't know the time limit, but if you expire you have to do a one hour lecture on road safety, or sit and read a book in Thai on road rules. Got done about 3 months ago, silly , didn't realize my license had expired. Should have just shown my OZ license and renewed the Thai one later. 200 Baht fine . Jim

In Chiang Mai, mine had expired so I had to watch a program on a TV monitor about the Thai Road Rules and then take an examination. The physical test of reaction time, color perception were also administered. Having had a one year license previously, I was able to get a five year one in the new format that has much English on it for use overseas and works well for an ID card in Thailand.

Yes Thai driver licenses are very handy, I have saved a lot of money on entrance fees on different tourist places by showing my licenses, getting Thai price = 1/2 price or more :)

I realized that my one year's drivers license expired about 6 months after the date. I went into the office with the necessary renewal items ( passport, medical certificate, and certificate of residence( and it was renewed promptly and efficiently without any questions, and I was given a five year license.

mine was expired for 18 months, the lady at the LTD (Au Udom) told as it was more than 12 months I would have to do the theory test/ watch video, they gave me a 5 yr licence.

I believe the one year license cannot be exchanged for a five year license until after it has expired, the five year license however must be renewed before it expires. Regardless of which category you are in you will still need to sit through the safety video and take a reaction test in most, if not all parts of the country.

That's the way it is CM. To obtain a 5-year licence, the rules state that the applicant must have held a "provisional" licence (1-year variety) for ONE year. So, to receive a 5-year licence, an applicant has to wait until the first licence has expired.

Yes and no.:) The one year license has to be renewed after expiry, or you will not be issued a five year license.

However renewal of a five year license does not have to be done before expiry. But you can do so, up to three months in advance.

If you do renew a five year license just after it has expired, you will receive close to 6 years validity.

The lecture and/or video must depend on who you get. I was 6 weeks over my 1 year license when I renewed, and I didn't have any video/lecture/tests. Simply renewed to a 5 year license.

A one to five year license never requires any testing, training or video watching, it's a straight forward renewal. And you did the right thing in renewing after expiry, otherwise you wouldn't get the 5 year license.

Strangely, if you have the 1-year temporary license, you should renew after it expires. If you renew before it expires then you will only get another 1-year license. If you already have a 5-year license you can renew just before it expires.

I read this statement somewhere. The question I would like to ask is this:

Is the above statement correct?

I possess the one year temporary licence. When is the correct time to renew it for the 5-year type.

Your kind advice is much appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance.

I renewed mine today after a 6 week gap.

I needed my old licence, a new medical, passport copy front page only and the letter of proof of residence again.

My medical cost 30 baht less than last year when it cost 60 baht and I sent the missus in again for the hassle free medical exam while I waited in the car.

The address thingy cost the most, but got it done while I happened to be at immigration doing a 90 day.

Was in the transport office at 8.20am...was out by 8.50am with a new 6 year license, yes 6 years....expires 2017....for 555 baht.........well chumped

Same here. It was just fortune that it happened. My birthday was on a Sunday so thought it best to go in Friday as I was concerned about what complications there may be if I let the 5 year expire. I was late in the afternoon and was told to come back Monday, which is one day after the bday. 5 years and 364 days. :D
