'I'M Innocent. I Didn'T Kill Your Son': Troy Davis' Last Words To Family In Execution Chamber Before He Is Finally Put To Death

Featured Replies

Death row inmate Troy Davis maintained his innocence to the end last night as he told the family of slain policeman Mark MacPhail, 'I'm innocent. I didn't kill your son.'

Strapped to a gurney, awaiting lethal injection, Davis lifted his head and looked at the dead man's family, to repeat his claim that he was not responsible for the police officer's 1989 murder.

His last words were: 'I'd like to address the MacPhail family. Let you know, despite the situation you are in, I'm not the one who personally killed your son, your father, your brother. I am innocent.

'The incident that happened that night is not my fault. I did not have a gun. All I can ask ... is that you look deeper into this case so that you really can finally see the truth.'

Davis then asked his family and friends 'to continue to fight this fight.'

He added: 'For those about to take my life, God have mercy on your souls. And may God bless your souls.'

The execution went ahead despite a dramatic intervention minutes before he was due to be put to death.

Lawyers for the death row inmate had made a last ditch appeal to the US Supreme Court. But after four hours deliberation, the nine justices unanimously decided to uphold the execution.

Minutes later Davis was strapped to the chair. He was declared dead at 11.08pm.

Davis' lawyer Thomas Ruffin denounced the execution as 'a legalised lynching'.

very weired case this one, as watching TV last night he had begged to take a lie detecter test, and his conviction was soley on 1 yes 1 witness testimonial.

i think if they find HE WASNT the killer, that could be the end of the death penalty in the USA, and i think there are going to be alot of cold case people looking at this crime to prove his innocent's

There is a lot more to this than is being reported. Three recantations were from friends of Davis and only two of the seven alleged "recantations" (out of 34 witnesses) actually recanted anything of value.

Now the media claim that seven of the nine witnesses against Davis at trial have recanted.

First of all, the state presented 34 witnesses against Davis -- not nine -- which should give you some idea of how punctilious the media are about their facts in death penalty cases.

Among the witnesses who did not recant a word of their testimony against Davis were three members of the Air Force, who saw the shooting from their van in the Burger King drive-in lane. The airman who saw events clearly enough to positively identify Davis as the shooter explained on cross-examination, "You don't forget someone that stands over and shoots someone."

When he was convicted there were many eye-witnesses.

Lie detector's are inadmissable in court. They can be beat - especially by people comfortable with lying.

ok, further to Ulysses G post, i can understand a bit more now, they way they where explaining on the news last night, and the tweets, in was only mentioning one witness,

This guy has had over 20 years of appeals. His appeals have been denied by the Georgia Supreme Court three times and it has been reviewed by the US Supreme Court two times.

One time the US Supreme Court appointed a federal judge to hear the case and see if there was any reason for them to consider an overturn of the conviction. The federal judge reported back to the Supreme Court there was no compelling evidence to overturn the conviction.

The second time the US Supreme Court viewed the case was yesterday. They refused to hear it.

As UG has pointed out, there were 34 witnesses to his actions. Seven of them recanted their testimony but that begs the question...Were they lying at the trial or were they lying when they recanted?

He has received a fair trial and the victim's family may finally have some closure.

Such cases of contradiction occur occasionally amongst the American judicial system.

Supposed wrongly accused executed. Surely, wouldn't be the first time.

....as all systems are imperfect.

True, and this is why the EU considers the dealth penalty barbaric.

The state of Georgia fries another non white death row inmate....no surprises in this story.

Chuckd do you think he would be toast now if he was a good ol' boy?

Sorry, this isn't about race.

A white man was executed on the same day but down in Texas.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) -- White supremacist gang member Lawrence Russell Brewer was executed Wednesday evening for the infamous dragging death slaying of James Byrd Jr., a black man from East Texas.

He also proclaimed he was innocent. But he's white so no one came to his defense.

Yes, I do believe he would be "toast" as you so delicately put it.

Davis is "toast" because he was found guilty in a court of law by a jury of 12 people, seven of whom were black. After over 20 years of appeals, he was legally executed. What part of that are you having trouble digesting?

Thanks, Koheesti, for the link. My internet with TOT sucks and it might have taken me another hour to find it through Drudge Report. I knew about the Texas execution of a white man for murdering a black man. I guess Smokie doesn't read the newspaper.

Precisely why many countries have abolished the death penalty. The jury system, like democracy, is the best system we've come up with; that doesn't make it infallible... or even a particularly good system. (I'm not expressing an opinion on this particular case, simply because I know nothing about it).

Not that particular one....thanks for your informed reply.
