I think what bothers me the most is that this upsetting and short sighted choice of teachers at Sacred Heart to allow this, has turned another thread into an ignorant Thai bashing fest.

Uptheos "Thai's aren't taught world history or geography."

Really, when was the last time that you looked at the Thai national curriculum?

You are as ignorant as those that you accuse of being.

Unless you yourself went to a Thai school or teach all subjects at a Thai school, how do you know everything that is taught.

What Thais learn is considerable the downside is because of the manner in which most educational institutes instill that knowledge what students forget is a lot.

I don' think that the average teacher or student in any country is always fully aware of the sensitivity needed in all areas. There was a teacher in Australia a year or two back that had his students plot a terrorist attack. In the 70's in the US one teacher wanted to get his students involved in studying about Nazis, so he created a system like the SS and had the students punish anyone that wore a certain colored arm band. They even made a TV movie about it.

Teachers in all countries and students make mistakes.

Do not make this into a Thai thing. I really hate how ignorant many posters are. They are outraged by the ignorance of one class from one school and then turn it into a chance to bash all Thai people, their cultural beliefs, and their educational system.

I doubt that anyone here including parents know everything that is taught to their children at school.

A lot of interesting perspectives have been raised by this thread. I saw this video about a week ago and found it hysterical. I found what happened at Sacred Heart school chilling, offensive and wrong. Am I a hypocrite? I don't know - again the Falang vs. Thai point of view will always come into play. I lean heavily toward 'the administration and teachers dropped the ball' in terms of a teaching opportunity and, if I did have children in the school, I would undoubtedly pull them out. You want your school teaching values along with the curriculum. That responsibility falls on administration and staff. This decision reflected SH's values. Children can plead ignorance but responsible educators - regardless of the hemisphere they were born in - may not. If the administrators and staff responsible for allowing this to happen justify their decision with ignorance, mai pben rai, and that was something that happened in the past so we don't need to respect it, again they are exhibiting their values. Now it's up to the paying parents to exhibit their own.

Totally agree,

But could it be that the school, or whoever thought this up, looks at the Nazi's as some sort of master race that very nearly did succeed in their plan to rule it's continent and beyond. :(

Any German readers here to comment ?.

Question most expats on some basic stuff regarding Thai history and you'll receive blank stares. However, these same expats expect Thais to be aware of nazi atrocities 70 years ago in Germany during the second world war.

My daughter was in a Thai school and they had lessons on Hitler and the gas chambers, I think around Mathayom 3. It wasn't really placed in the whole context of the Second World War, but focused on Hitler and his treatment of the Jews. I assume this was part of the general curriculum and would guess that most teachers would be aware of the signifcance.

I was giving the benefit of the doubt that the march was born of ignorance (although the 'educators' should have known), and not that the event was the result of a teacher(s) believing that the Nazis were "some sort of master race". If it were true that this was some sort of celebration of Nazi rule, Sacred Heart is really in trouble.

I am not saying that Uptheos is right or wrong about Thais being taught very little world history - although I suspect that he may have a point - but I know him and he is far from ignorant.

Recently, so let me re-phrase my quote.

1. The Thai national curriculum is not being taught as it should be.

2. A curriculum does not ensure that a person will be able to explain what a continent is and be able to name them. Neither will it guarantee that the student's will know that in 1975-79 genocide, involving millions of people was committed in the country adjacent to Thailand. (examples only) They would only know about 'the temple' on the Thai / Cambodia border and the wicked Khmers.

3. I doubt if any student or teacher will know what genocide means

Do your own testing and draw your own conclusion.smile.gif

You just cannot transfer the feelings and emotions gathered in your life onto other people living x thousand miles away, I can't understand that at all.......why would you expect them to understand?

In the same way that I understand about the Khmer Rouge, the Japanese invasion of China, the Vietnam war and all kinds of things that happened thousands of miles away from where I was born.

The fact that the Nazis never did anything in Thailand, to Thai people, shouldn't really mean that they are unable to understand anything about them and somehow make it 'ok' to have school children parading around dressed as Nazis, should it?

I see the Thai wai military statues, I do not, there are no feelings or emotions stirred in me. Their history, their emotion. If they tried to force me to wai at the statues I would think this rather uncalled for. In the same thinking I do not expect the Thai to share any emotion regarding any war in my part of the world.

Ok, perhaps you are just Ethnocentric and not fully ignorant.

However, the things that you mention are in the national curriculum. Because of the amount of paperwork that is required by MOE schools do cover the material. If the students learn it or not or if the teachers themselves can fully comprehend, is a different matter but that is not a Thai thing that is an educational issue that faces many nations.

People from England say the same about people from US. Does that mean that the US education system isn't good? Or is it just that there are different priorities from each nation's perspective.

I also think that your perspective of Thai people is limited. Just because the people that you know don't know the names in English doesn't mean that people don't actually know these things. If you could actually communicate in Thai and find someone that wasn't raised from a village you might actually be surprised what Thais know.

Do you really think that the average 13 year old of any nation knows what genocide is? Especially in a foreign language.

You are old so you think that everyone should have the knowledge that you possess today but my guess is that you were as much as idiot when you were thirteen as the rest of us.

Why don't you sit in on the Onet tests in Dec. and see if you can pass even the 6 grade test. My guess is that you can't. There are failures in the system and the breadth of the curriculum, however the real issue with the lack of education is the fact that many of these people are in classes of 50-60.

The failure isn't that the curriculum doesn't favor western ideals.

I also think that pulling a kid out of a school because one class did something is a little over the top. Forcing a teacher to resign, or switching the classroom is acceptable but totally blaming an entire school or a culture because of one teacher's poor judgement is a little extreme.

I agree that it is very short sighted of the school and the teachers should have stopped it.

It is easy to see how it may have happened. The Thais love Mr Bean, and Rohan Atkinson has often featured the goose step in his routines.

See the attached link from one of his movies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbMNpelOWv4

The Thai kids may have seen this and thought it fun to copy, hence the picture of Mr Bean on a flag.

'Sound of Music' for this years school play???

Do you know whether this was a decision made by just one teacher? The event was quite involved - lengthy parade, many different costumes. I for one would like to know if it in fact was the idea of one teacher, and if so, if there has been, or will be anything done about this one teacher's decision to parade children through the streets of Chiang Mai dressed in Nazi uniforms.

I'm writing on an English language forum about Thai education, hence the use of the English word genocide......of course it would be something like การฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธุ์

I would have thought that you would realise that, but obviously not.

You haven't 'done your money' at Sacred Heart by any chance?

They can't have been making fun in the same mode as Mr Bean, can they?..........would make a lot of the posters here look like intolerant, narrow minded, over sensitive, ranting farangs....:whistling:

Any activity regarding dressing up and parading in a public place would need at least the authorization of the principle or designate. Others outside the school need to be informed and allow it to go ahead, in order that the parade does not cause harm to the kids. IMO everyone in the school must have been involved up to a point. But maybe the teacher with the most medals made the final decision?

my wife and I have our daughter at Sacred Heart. Over the past 2 years I've had plenty of complaints about how they operate, but still have to hope there is some quality there, being a private Catholic school like I went to long ago.

Wife brought home the attached photo from the Sport's Day parade. There are many other pictures with swatstika flags, goose-stepping, and the Nazi salute, but this one stands out. Can you believe the boots and the automatic weapons of these sporty young ladies? Pretty heady stuff....

Being an oldy here l think it is a disgrace but sadly the youngsters probably know nothing about the Nazi's. Show them a few video's of the concentration camps that our boy's had to ''clean up'' and this sham would have been buried. :(

Now I am really curious. What is the point of Sacred Heart, apparently on more than one occasion, basically paying tribute to the Nazi regime?

I suppose it's always possible they have a Nazi rat there in a powerful position who is trying to play with western sensibilities.

And about to unleash his stormtroopers on the world in stilletto boots armed with toy plastic guns.......be afraid...be very afraid......as apparently he may have chosen Mr Bean to organise and lead this awesome strike force......

Truly ignorant if true, particularly when considering the percentage of students from families that include at least one western parent. Really unbelievable, and it would appear that this Nazi 'rat' (a rather understated term for the excrement in my book) has considerable influence.

Well at least the teachers seem to be having fun. I presume they are teachers in the background - as pink and purple are the school colours.

Good point, though l suspect most are under ground in a box now but the Nazi thing still exists in the father land and perhaps one has leached out here. Who knows.

Interesting to know if there are any Germans at the school teaching ''English'' eh.

That female at the right of your photo. Is that a teacher?
