Running Electricity Poles To House

Featured Replies

Hi, we'll soon be putting up a small building on the land to satisfy the authorities and to get a house number giving us a water and power feed to the house, before we start our build, I've just under 400 mtrs of electric poles to run, I spoke with a contractor to possibly have him fit the poles since the PEA have quoted around 10,000 per pole @ 40 mtr apart, whereas the contractor is quoting 3500 per pole but from what the contractor seems to be telling us is that the last pole of the PEA will be where the meter should go, if this is correct what the contractor is telling us then it would mean our meter will still be quite a bit from the land,, does anyone have experience of this ??

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

Just make sure the last pole is in the soi ( lane ) adjacent to the house.

Thanks for the reply Kwasaki, So what the contractor is telling me is correct then,,? with the location in mind I guess I'll not have much of a saving, we've just under 400 Mtr to run, and only the last 80 or 90 mtr of that is on the wife's land,, was hoping I could have the contractor Install most of the poles and then have the meter close to the house on the contractor poles,, thus saving quite a bit, looks like thats a non starter then,

Thanks

Our meter is on our land. This is because we own our own transformer, which is on our land. PEA meter reader uses binoculars to read the meter :D

My suggestion is to go to your local PEA and get friendly - ie: what's their idea for the best way to do. They usually good to work with.

Hi Steve, wife's been there a couple of times, they do seem friendly enough, but thought I would first gather further info from other members that may have used a contractor to install the poles and whether this contractor was correct in what he was telling us that the meter must be fitted at a point in the line of PEA installed poles rather than at any point after where the contractor has installed the poles.

Thanks,

The meter normally goes as near as possible to the point where PEA's infrastructure ends and yours begins. In most cases, this would be the last PEA pole if you are getting 400/230 V service or the first pole on your property if you are getting 22 kV service. The reasoning behind this is that line and transformer losses related to your installation are to be paid by you.

If you want your electrical system to work correctly (some people don't seem to care), it is important to calculate the proper cable size running that last 80/90m from the meter to your property to maintain sufficient voltage. Often the PEA/contractors select the cable size arbitrarily and they are undersized to cut corners. There are online calculators and this has been discussed frequently here with links.

We recently put some 6m poles in, 1300b each sunk by a "contractor" but all the staff were PEA employees using PEA equipment. We did not get a official PEA price but the comments were around 8000b each. This was done on work days, no need to ask questions !

Below are 4 very relevant links I found useful on this site. 400m is allot, I only ran just over 150m, that had it's own issues, good luck.

Thanks for all the info guys, that's given me plenty of information to work from, I think I'll just have to get the bulk of the posts done by the PEA as I'm not too keen on having the meter too much outside the land, but we'll have a word with them again and see what our best option would be..

Thanks again for all replies.
