Warning On Falklands

This is an interesting concept. To whom does the US hand back Hawaii?

When they were accepted into the US they were The Republic of Hawaii and prior to that they were the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Maybe if we could find a direct descendant of Captain Cook.we could go with that?

Not really so simple after all.

I don't want anyone else to die over this but I think the Malvinas should be Argentinian. I have heard the British argument and witnessed British emotion about it, and also heard from the Argentinian side. I can't get past the geography of the thing. Does the US always have to side with the UK on every issue? I thought you US let the Americas down on this one.

Of course it didn't help my sympathies during the actual war that Thatcher was almost as fascistic as the Argie-pargie dictators she was fighting.

Don't the people who live there have a say in this?

An English-speaking population who have only minor trade ties to Argentina - they are surely entitled to choose either complete independence from either party, or to live under benevolent control of their own chosen protector.

That would never be the Argies.

Agreed. I adore Argentina and have found her people wonderful, inviting and friendly. Buenos Aires is on our to live in hit list for the future. I have to make one slightly succinct point about occupancy and the Argentineans. What language do they speak? Are they not invading colonists in the same way we were? I think that it is silly that this argument still persists, but oil does do that. Point above is correct. We hand back the Falklands and the US hands back Hawaii. Simple really.

...and the Falklands were an empty rock that nobody cared about.

The Argies have gone all quiet since the new British ship and accompanying nuclear sub arrived. cheesy.gif

When the Falklands Islands were discovered, they was inhabited by penguins and not much else. The Argentinians were late to the show. The reasons they had for invading the islands were now't to do with any territorial claim, but more to divert attention to problems in Argentina. Pretty much what she is trying to do now. We sunk one of the survivors from Pearl Harbour in that war. She was the USS Phoenix

Funny how this isn't getting reported much. It seems Kirchner's attempts at distracting the people have failed dismally.

Tens thousands of Argentinians took to the streets on Friday in frustration at the state of the country under President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

In the country's capital, Buenos Aires, up to 500,000 people marched peacefully through the streets, protesting about a range of issues - from a stagnant economy to inflation, from to political corruption, to Kirchner wanting to amend the constitution to permit a third term in office.

A referendum is to be held in the Falklands in March to see what the islanders think.

The Argentine Foreign Minister was invited to meet Falkland Islands' representatives in London. He refused, making it quite clear that Argentina is not interested in the islanders' views.

My conclusion:- there must be a lot of oil there!

Or more likely the Argentine government is in all sorts of trouble on the domestic front and need a bit of nationalistic chest-puffing to distract public attention. All very similar to 1982.

Don't forget that the Argies also aim to pinch South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and that the 1982 conflict kicked off on S.Georgia....

The referendum is currently being held, and the results are expected tomorrow (Thai time). If it is pro-British, as expected, the British Government will accept it, and the Argentinians will refuse to accept it.

Oil production is expected to start in 2017.

The Argentinians are great people (mostly Welsh), but the Falklanders are not Argentinians; simple as that. Nor should the Falklanders be used as a pawn in Argentinian politics, as they were in 1982, and as it appears possible may happen again.

I like England but my heart is with the South Americans.

So what if it is about oil?
Western countries don't do funny things about oil?

BHO is very big on tinpot fundamentalist hellholes electing a dictatorship through the ballot box, but gets sniffy when a democratic vote of self-determination is held by white British descendants. I guess he must still be sore about British colonial rule in Kenya, where incidentally his half brother Abongo Obama polled 1% of the vote. cheesy.gif

Sorry, the Welsh must be somewhere else! 60% Italian, according to Wiki.

Doing 'funny things'is NOT a justification!

Perhaps your heart needs a chat with your brain....!

On what basis should the Falklands become Argentinian? Please don't give me geographical proximity or Alaska goes straight back to the Russkis and USVI/Puerto Rico go to the Dominican Republic...

You are quite right about the Welsh in Argentina. Not a large community, they are based in Southern Patagonia and include several thousand Welsh-speaking descendants of the original settlers.

There is an even larger Anglo-Argentine community whose ancestors went out to develop Argentina in the 19th century and thus are a part of modern day Argentina's elite. Both ex-President Alfonsin and, ironically, the commander of the 1982 Argentine invasion force of the Falklands are English by descent. Talking of 1982, two schoolmates of mine met up at the Port Stanley racecourse (being used as a POW holding area) at the end of the Falklands campaign, one was in the Welsh Guards (part of the British Army for those unaware!), the other was serving in the Argentine Marines, being an Anglo-Argentine from Buenos Aires. Luckily both came through unscathed.

There have been historically many other links between the UK and Argentina, with the Brits being the largest investor in the country until Peron nationalised most of the British-owned assets. Both polo and rugby were introduced to Argentina by the Brits. The former was unfortunate given the fact that Argentina is probably the best polo playing country today and regularly thrash the Brits!

Well you could do it with pizza, pasta, and gelato ...

Argie beef used to be great....until they started fiddling with it....

There's not much else....next you'll be extolling the virtues of their wine JT.

Yes their Italian food is quite good including of course gelato which is world class. I still like their beef and yes I like their wines too. It's weird they're not into seafood more being on a big coast though.

I'm going to post the what I deleted last night, as I thought to myself you would think I was deliberately flaming, I'm not, just take a deep breath and think about it.

The modern state of Texas, forged on the anvil of the Alamo, 1836.

The modern state of Germany, founded 1871

The modern state of Italy, founded 1871

British ownership of the Falkland Islands, founded 1833. Our claim to the uninhabited Islands pre-dates Germany, Italy, and the Alamo.

So give back Texas to the Mexicans, return Italy to the Principalities, and disband modern Germany, and we will gift the Falklands to Argentina.

We can't return them, Argentina never owned in them in the first place.

So deal? or no deal? or would you like to selectively pick the bits of history that suit you?

Just sayin' coffee1.gif

Nice to see you talk about British ownership of the Falklands as "we"...no mention of Scottish colonies or English activity, just a straight we (ie British). How heart-warming, but as previously posted, "United We Conquer", and as a postscript therefore..."Divided We...???"

So apart from the beef, wine, gelato, pasta and football (that's "soccer" to you uninitiated types), only available on the mainland of course, what have the Argies ever done for the Falklands?

BTW, what possible right do the Argies have over S. Georgia and the S.Sandwich Islands or is it just about geographical proximity?

Perhaps Canada,or the USA, should take back St Pierre & Miquelon. Hawaii can be returned to the Brits along with the 13 colonies on the eastern seaboard considering we fought and spent for them over 170 years....

Texas to the Mexicans? DEAL! clap2.gif

And California, New Mexico and Arizona..? Rather more of a loss than Texas, methinks.

Is there an Italian restaurant on the island already?

Perhaps that will influence opinions on the board....

We keep Cali. The others, nobody cares.

So the Louisiana Purchase goes back to France; 13 Colonies, Hawaii and the pacific NW go back to the Brits; Texas, CA and the SW states go back to Mexico; most of the more interesting places go back to the Native Americans....looks like you will be moving to Iowa. So go for UK citizenship and live on the Falklands, probably more fun than Des Moines.

On which one of the 778 islands that make up the glorious British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands would that be?
