It could be worse. It's not Philadelphia.

Is that the "cheese", the city or just the place for "brotherly love"?

The city, where I popped out and skipped town ASAP.

JT is on THEIR side.

I will remember this come the next invasion attempt....ph34r.png

Their food is better. What can I say? coffee1.gif

You;ve obviously not eaten proper British grub.

Try some Gary Rhodes recipes sometime. I use his CDs all the time when planning meals for guests. All British, with traditional Scottish, Welsh and Ulster recipes as well as English.

Admittedly when I'm on my own it tends to be pies or pasta dishes, but then that's because I can make small quantities for myself, whereas the guest meals need six diners usually.

And yet, as I discovered, Philadelphia conceals a clutch of cultural aces – among others, America's first opera house (the Academy of Arts), America's first theatre (the Walnut Street), the nation's oldest art institution (the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) and the largest concentration of 18th-century architecture in the US (Society Hill), as well as an orchestra that ranks among America's "Big Five" and a thriving restaurant scene.

We now know how the residents feel.

Falkland Islanders Vote To Remain British
1:44am UK, Tuesday 12 March 2013
Falkland Islanders have voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a British oversees territory.
Around 92% of the islands' 1,672 eligible voters turned out to deliver a 98.8% "yes" in favour of staying an internally self-governing British territory.
Just three votes, or 0.2% of the ballot, were against the referendum, which asked: "Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?"
It was designed to send a strong message to Argentina, which earlier derided the poll as illegal.

From the Argies POV, they're squatters. So the squatters had a vote. So what?

Same applies in the US.

Only the Indians have the right to determine the future of their country. The white invaders from sixteenth and seventeenth centuries plus their black importees from the eighteenth century should be ignored and the people who have arrived in the last 150 years should go home.

I'm disappointed at you, JT. The zealous defender of minorities and underdogs! Surely the Falklanders (about 3,000 of them) are underdogs against 40 million Argentinians.... or are you rooting for the 3 dissentient voters?

I see my beloved Argentina as the underdogs in this against a remnant of British colonialism.

Right. The Argentines don't like that you laugh at them. They are patient. Their claim will not go away. I think time and destiny is on their side.

Yes JT....once all the oil has been plundered it might be time to give the rocks to the Argentinian government for safe keeping. biggrin.png

That's harsh. That kind of attitude is why they are angry. They have a legitimate POV and yet they are mocked.

You'll twist anything to suit your wishes! British colonialism has been dead for years... oh, I suppose we still have Tristan da Cunha. Colonialism, surely, though, needs natives to colonise. It's not simply about territory.

Had the Argentinians continued to explore diplomatic routes into a Falkland Islands settlement then they might have gained.

As it is there will not be a "Malvinas" in my lifetime....you can be sure of that!

The UK will simply continue to ignore their pathetic demands....and send our ships and army there on exercises.

Argentina miscalculated....and didn't take their opportunity centuries ago either....now there is oil they are bleating away.

I await the return of Texas to the Mexicans....complete with oil revenues.

As it is there will not be a "Malvinas" in my lifetime....you can be sure of that!

Very old, are you?

Younger than you JT....and with great genes to boot! w00t.gif

Edit: There is no way the Brits are going to give up the Falklands after already fighting and winning one war over them.

The Argies will simply have to keep on being ignored for another century at least.

Gives them something to moan about I suppose! And you JT....feel free to tell us all about the evils of the British Empire.

Perhaps a comparison with the Portuguese/Spanish/French empires is in order?

They're all similarly evil.

Simple question.

Would you feel comfortable living in a country led by Ms Kirchner?

I see my beloved Argentina as the underdogs in this against a remnant of British colonialism.

The British people have nothing against the Argentinian people. We trade with Argentina, we welcome their rugby team to our shores (then knock the shit out of them - all in the name of sport) and we have many descendants of British settlers in Argentina. We built their railways, we taught them polo, we taught them soccer. We have had a very long-term relationship with the people of Argentina.

All this shit flying around is simply a noise from the incompetent politicians - in both places. Both Galtieri and Kirchner have screwed up the economy disastrously and need to take the electorates mind off the mistakes they have made, both recently and thirty years ago. Camoron is also in trouble in the UK, so hopes to 'do a Maggie'. He won't, of course - he's not nearly the man she was.

The British people realise this, as I am sure do most educated Argentinians. Let these nothing politicians keep squabbling like small girls in primary school and leave the Falklands to the people who scratch a very tough living from their homeland - because having been there for 180 years that is what the place is.

You're very good at calling people evil, JT. How about your beloved Argies, who slaughtered the indigenous inhabitants in the Conquista del Desierto in 1879? who 'disappeared' large numbers of their opponents during the military dictatorship which invaded the Falklands in 1982 to distract its unfortunate people from what was going on in their own country? The Spanish, who settled Argentina and failed to settle the Falklands, were probably the most vicious of all the imperial powers; where are the Aztecs, the Incas, and the Mayas now? There aren't many left. Your own people, moving westwards in the nineteenth century over what is now the United States, decimated the native Indians.

The Falklanders, by contrast, exterminated no indigenous inhabitants; they settled 180 years ago in an unforgiving terrain on which they have established a viable settlement. And you want to hand them over to the Argies!

As much as Thailand!

I have been told that the new Pope thinks the Falklanders have a right to their independence. I can't find a link for this; can anyone substantiate?

Does anyone want independence for the Falklands? The British don't; the Argentinians don't; and I think the Flaklanders don't.

Perhaps the Pope should stick to what he knows.

Yes of course:

Thanks, JT. Clearly my informant was wrong!

Sorry, independence was the wrong word (my word, not the Pope's, SC). What I meant was a British Dependent Territory... but in fact he wanted it to be part of the Argentines. Anyway, now we know where he stands.... not that it matters very much in this case.

Another quote from the Daily Telegraph

Should Argentina be handed over to Britain as part of the Falklands?

I;m sure you'd get more than three votes for that...
