Every taxpayer is to get a personal annual statement revealing how each pound taken from them by the Revenue is spent.

George Osborne will announce the radical move in tomorrow’s Budget, saying every worker has the right to know how their taxes are spent once the money enters the public purse.

In some cases, the results are likely to prove startling.

A higher-rate taxpayer earning £50,000 this year would be told they paid £14,183 in tax and National Insurance – of which around a third, £4,727.67, is spent on welfare.

At the same time, £2,469.68 is spent on health, £1,848.73 on education, £818.52 on defence and £705.62 on public order and safety. A further £141.12 is given to foreign aid and £70.56 is handed to the EU.

and an intersting post in the article, which is true !

Tax does not end at income tax and NI contributions. We are taxed to death thro' VAT, fuel tax, road fund tax, tv licence, council tax, airport tax, hospital parking, stamp duty, death duty, alcohol and tobacco duty, etc, etc. All of these extra taxes are theft by the government. Over 80% in total tax is extracted from the average wage earner.

Nah there's rooms at that eyesore in Samui much cheaper!

Yeah, Boater !!

I was going to point out the additional tax sources apart from IT, but you beat me to it.

You haven't mentioned the taxes paid by businesses, nor mport duties, etc., nor the local taxes that the mini-politicians spend on your local amenities.

What the tax-payer in the UK will receive as an 'accounting' of where his tax-dollar is spent will be as much of a lie as the promises these people made when ou voted for them.

I love all this talk about transparency... everything these days has to be transparent.

When I was in Hong Kong, some firm sent me a freebie calculator... which I loved. It was completely transparent; there were no works, nothing moving; and yet it did abstruse calculations.

So much of life is like that.

A freebie calculator? That constitutes a dribe in our oh-so-transparent world.

yep. Recently I had to undergo a "Integrity in Business Dealings" course which dealt with those issues.

Life has changed since I worked for a commercial firm. Then, if you didn't show integrity, they sacked you. Now they give you a course in it.

I lay you odds that.............

The Social Security benefits cheat hotline will be ringing off the hook as soon as this policy comes in...........that's what this is all about, to get people grassing each other up.

Cunning, very cunning, and I bet it works.

It is called an abacus.

Spoilsport! But no, it was plastic and, in case transparent isn't good enough, see-through.

But aren't those old-fashioned Chinese towkays fantastic when they ply their abacuses (abaci?)? You pay over the odds without a second thought.

I hope it does work. And probably the majority of honest tax paying citizens do too.
