With some research I found that he was visiting the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Israel when the picture was taken. This is the kind of lie that his critics cling to to paint him as something other than he is.

The Washington Post is one of the most ELITE of American newspapers. They published the self description of West. Believe it. The Washington Post is an EXCELLENT news source. Edit in: I admire the man for his devotion to duty and protecting the men in his command. As I recall the incident, his unit in Iraq had been under some attack and they captured an Al Qaeda insurgent. Col,. West tried to get him to tell them where the bad guys were and the AQ insurgent refused.

Col. West took out his .45, pumped a round into the floor near the insurgents foot and rephrased his question. That seemed to make the insurgent much more talkative and his unit was safer.

He retired shortly after the incident, with the full respect of his men.
